The Pittsburgh Penguins have won the Stanley Cup! :D

What a great team. Lucky too, that's always part of it, and this team had a good dose of it this playoff run (apart from the fact that Tanger was injured), especially considering how often they were outshot. Last year's team probably played better. But hey, if you have two of the best players in the world and a few other good forwards and very good goalies it matters less that your defense is held together with duct tape. Second consecutive Conn Smythe for Sid. I did not at all expect a Cup win at the start of this season, or at the start of the playoffs, or several times during the playoffs, but I'll take it :D

(Sidenote, staying up to watch the game has more negative side effects when I need to go to work the next day. Worth it though.)

Aaaand soon the expansion draft. Hopefully it will be exciting, and hopefully Flower ends up somewhere good. So happy for him that he could play & win two series this spring. Flower giving the Cup to Murray was a great moment.

I feel, in good Viennese, "wia daschlogn," i.e. my head weighs a ton and that's after pain pills. I blame the weather, it went from middle of the summer on Friday to autumn on Saturday and then spring today. (Weather forecast: changeable, fuck.) At least it's the weekend and it doesn't matter so much, and in a few minutes I will go to bed. Sleeep.

Today I ran in Vienna's Women's Run, it was nice. 5km, and considering that I didn't train much because my knees hurt if I'm not careful I'm satisfied with my time. Every kilometer I was a little bit faster.

Then I visited my family for lunch & a nap, and when I came home our new roommate Eva offered me still warm apricot pie. We definitely got lucky in the roommate lottery. Then I convinced her to watch her first hockey game, that was fun too. The Pens won 7-0 :) Goals goals goals. And Sweden won gold, capped by attempted goalie murder.
schneefink: (Fleury)
Just some quick hockey notes:

- Pens beat CBJ in five! :D
Rust with two goals in an elimination game again, Guentzel with a hatty and five goals and Geno with eleven (!) points in the series. And that without their #1 defenseman and goalie, and Flower now has the most playoff wins in Penguins history. So nice. I even watched one game live last weekend, it's so much fun when my team wins.

- Nashville swept Chicago :D
(Chicago fans skip this bit)
So satisfying on so many levels. Happy PK and sad Blackhawks at the same time, win-win. Pekka Rinne had as many points as Chicago's top players, beautiful. Will we now hear less about Toews' intangible leadership qualities? Unfortunately doubtful.

- I got to watch Sharks-Oilers playoff overtime hockey for breakfast :) Unfortunately only for a few minutes because when I got up I didn't even realize it was still going on. Well-earned win for the Oilers. (I'm rooting for San Jose this series - sorry [personal profile] jae!! - because their core is old and won't have many more chances at the Cup while the Oilers will be a serious contender probably for many years to come, but the Oilers are fun to watch. (Also I laughed when an article mentioned Justin Schultz giving his old friends on the Oilers advice about playing in the playoffs. Poor Taylor Hall.)

- Playoffs are even worse than the regular season when it comes to players not getting penalized/punished for stupid moves that injure opponents. This is my least favorite aspect of hockey, ugh.

- In non-NHL hockey news, Austria's women's team lost their only game in the B World Championship to Japan, only winning silver and so not advancing to the A level. Nana Fujimoto *shakes fist*
The event was held in Graz, Austria, ~3 hours from Vienna, and I was thinking of going this weekend before I realized that I mixed up the dates. Very smart, self.

Playoffs!

The NHL playoffs start tomorrow! Is it acceptable to wear a Geno Malkin shirt to work? Eh, probably. How is it time for playoffs again already. Last year was amazing, especially during the time when I was actually in the US and could watch the games live with a bunch of fans. And then the Cup! So great.

This year I have low expectations ever since we learned that Tanger can't play :( Ugh, injuries. So maybe this could finally be the Caps' year, and as long as the Pens beat CBJ (and Chicago doesn't win) I'll be happy. (I say that now, let's see what it looks like in a week or two.)

I don't know how many games I'll watch live, probably not too many because of work. But thankfully there are weekends. It's hard to recall what early rounds playoff excitement felt like, and it's also different every year depending on investment, but depending on how the games go, the next few weeks could be stressful. Fingers crossed for no injuries, and for all the teams I like to win.

Our shower hates me. For a few months now the water got cold sooner than I liked and I had to take very short showers, but my flatmates said they did not have that problem, which is odd. Then yesterday I thought perhaps it had something to do with me turning up the radiator before taking a shower in winter, so I didn't do that yesterday. As a result the water became cold even sooner and didn't warm up again while I waited, so I ended up taking a cold shower, which I hate hate hate. And five minutes after I left the shower the water was warm again. Ughhhh.

I'm so busy watching Critical Role that even though I made notes for every episode I'm not in the mood to actually post about it, because I could be watching more episodes instead.

The Buffalo Beauts won the NWHL's Isobel Cup with a 3-2 win over the Boston Pride, a huge upset. Wow. I was already amazed (and sad) that they'd managed to knock out the Rivs. At least the Riveters managed to defeat the until then undefeated Boston Pride in the last game of the regular season.
Btw, the playoff format was ridiculous. You play over a dozen games during the regular season and then have elimination game playoffs, with four teams? Either give the trophy to the team with the most points in the regular season (which they probably don't want to do because playoffs seem to be traditional in North American sports), or have at least a best-of-three format. Like this all you need is a hot goalie, which is exactly what the Beauts had in Brianne McLaughlin. 56 saves, wow. (And iirc the Beauts had 13 shots total!) I read that they shortened it to accommodate the schedule for the World Championships, but they really should have thought of that earlier.
The Canadiennes won the CWHL's Clarkson Cup, but I know comparatively very little about the CWHL.

In NHL news, the Pens finally played another afternoon game that I could watch live, and this time they even won! I almost forgot about it and missed the first period. DD and I even got our third flatmate, who doesn't know anything about hockey, to watch for a few minutes. No goals during that time though, and I don't know how much she liked it. There'll be more chances.
4-0 against Florida, Sid with a hat trick, beautiful. Guentzel-Crosby-Sheary is such an amazing line. Probably this year's version of HBK in the sense of "probably wouldn't have happened without injuries, let's take it as a silver lining." Speaking of injuries, it's ridiculous how many this team has. I'm sorry that Geno is out especially, because he still had a shot at the Art Ross, and I'm annoyed that it happened for such a stupid reason. Let other people block shots, Geno, especially during not-critical phases of games.
schneefink: (ahsoka)
Some more brief Critical Role episode reactions/favorite parts. Once I'm working full-time I won't have as much time to listen/watch anymore, but I'll try for at least two episodes a week so I can eventually catch up, that should be easily doable.

Episodes 46-56 )

Last D&D session MC might have actually managed to prevent a war instead of starting one! And survived a dragon's wrath, go me.

The Riveters led 3-1 and lost 3-4 against the Boston Pride -.- And in NHL news Tanger might be seriously injured again, fuck this. Why do I like a sport again? Ah right, there are pretty things like last night's shootout goal by Kucherov.

I've wanted to write fic for "my" D&D game for a while now, and when I found the h/c bingo challenge that was the perfect opportunity. I started writing this after session 34, and as of 36 it has already been thoroughly jossed.

I went climbing with LB and friends yesterday and today I remember that I have back muscles. Cool (ouch.) I'm thinking of signing up for a climbing class at 7am (because all the other ones are booked out), I'm half hoping someone will talk me out of it.

We were climbing until 21:10 and I thought the timing was great because it meant the last two hours before the NHL trade deadline I was too busy to be nervous, then I checked my phone in the locker room and it said "the Penguins have made two trades," very informative. I'm satisfied with the trades the team made, but I'm also very curious what they're going to do with so many defensemen.
Then the Pens lost against Chicago and let their biggest asshole score a hat trick, boo.

DD has an exam today and afterwards we'll watch the last two NiF episodes together :) And then I have a long list of recs to send her, I love sharing cool stuff.
schneefink: (FF Kaylee in hammock)
I'm sick, and it sucks. I especially hate the timing because during my skiing vacation I felt full of energy and I was hoping that it would carry over to when I'm back, instead this. I should be fine in a few days, at least.

To distract myself I'm half watching, half listening to more Critical Role. Thoughts on episodes 36-45 )

In hockey news, Sid got his 1000th point and then a beautiful OT goal on a fantastic pass by Geno, these two together are just so great. But Olli is out six weeks and Jeff Schultz may also be injured >.< On top of all the other injuries, joy. The trade deadline is soon and it will be very stressful, fuck. Hopefully before that the Pens win the outdoor game against Philly.
schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
I told myself not to care about it, I knew it would be stupid, I'm trying not to care, but I'm still annoyed about the NHL's stupid Top 100 players list. No Geno! No Thornton, or Iginla, and instead Toews and Keith and that other Blackhawks asshole. Bad list. If they had to have too many Blackhawks, couldn't they at least have chosen Hossa? I know it wasn't his choice, but I hope Toews is terribly embarrassed about being chosen, because he does not deserve it at all.

Better things to care about: D&D. Battle! Rocks fall. )

I love my character so much <3 By now she's powerful too, and will soon become even more so. I'm trying to decide what color her robes are so I can picture her better. (Something with color but not too flashy. She's made of light grey stone, her cat is grey and her beetle mostly-black chitin; many of her spells are fire spells but she's learning more about necromancy. Maybe pale gold, with maybe dark red embroidery? Colors are hard.)
schneefink: (Fleury)
After getting a short intro to HTML and CSS last weekend, this weekend I got a crash course in JavaScript. Coding is fun! …provided in the end things work as intended. At first I thought the most frustrating thing is looking for a mistake for a long time and then finding out it is a stupid typo in the easiest line, but later I learned that even more frustrating is a bug that our teachers couldn't solve or even explain either and that meant I couldn't complete the last two exercises. (Tbf it would probably have been less annoying if the teachers had approached it better.)
Despite that, the teachers told me they think I have a talent for coding. They said that I seem to understand it quickly and also ask the right kind of questions, and they encouraged me to keep doing it. Always nice to get compliments :) Who knows, maybe I really will study it a bit more.

Last D&D session a new player joined us – and next week he might not be able to make it, and then he'll be on vacation for three weeks, so I don't think the timing is very good… Eh. If he keeps playing the party will have another primary spellcaster; we're pretty magic heavy, I hope that won't turn out to be a problem at some point. Well we already know that the extremely powerful Citadel's view of talented magic users is "with us or against us" and the latter don't tend to survive very long, so there will definitely be repercussions.
Other things that happened last session: theft and surprise attacks )

For the first time in a while, today I managed to watch a complete Penguins hockey game in real-time :D It is so much fun, especially when like today they're winning. The first line is so great <3 Sid and the kids. Conor Sheary is smoking hot, indeed. Sid is so amazing to watch – that pass on the Rust goal, whoa. On sequences where he doesn't score too, that don't show up on highlight reels so much. Best player in the world.
Geno is also amazing, though he wasn't as outstanding today as he can be (and he took another stupid minor penalty, as he tends to do.) He and Sid seem to take turns with who looks better any given night. The chances that at one point this season the two of them could be #1 and #2 in the scoring race are not bad :)

I have many plans for tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Stocking

I signed up for fandom_stocking again, in a victory against self-doubt. My stocking is here.
And I reminded myself that even if I don't finish even half the treats I wanted to write, I'm sure people will still be happy to receive gift fic months later. Also I try to remember the two cakes principle. I almost finished completely rewriting my Yuletide fic and I like it better than the first version.

I didn't request Hockey RPF, not because I don't still enjoy reading hockey RPF fic but because I signed up late and in that moment I couldn't think of (not-angst) requests. (Of course I thought of things afterwards, it always works like that.) I still enjoy following the Penguins, and it's always especially fun when they're on a win streak. Sometimes it's harder than other times to focus on the narratives that I enjoy (like Sid's incredible goal-scoring, last year's rookies doing well, next year's rookies looking good) and not those that make me sad (Fleury), but the memory of the Cup win last season makes everything better. Also nice feel-good pieces like this one about how happy Schultz is in Pittsburgh and how well he is doing and how much Gonch is helping the defensemen.
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
I woke up at 5am last night because the thermostat was buzzing -.- Not a very good day, next chance tomorrow.

Almost two years ago I made a list of which NHL teams I liked and which I didn't, with the goal to repeat the process later to see what changed. I forgot in January, but I made another list now. Quite a lot changed, I even had to make some new categories.

current list )

Very broadly, currently 7 teams are more on the positive side, 17 neutral, 6 negative. Last time it was 15 positive, 11 neutral, 5 negative. Last time I pitied 2 teams, now 7, probably because I know more about more teams.
Sidenote, I still didn't manage to list all 30 teams without looking them up. (I forgot Colorado and Detroit, again.) One day.
schneefink: (Fleury)
3 years, 3.75 AAV for Murray. Good for him.
In MY ideal hockey future the Pens trade Murray for a big return (he's cost-controlled for the next three years now, doesn't that make him a better trade asset?) and keep Flower. Flower still has many years of good play in him, and when he starts to decline the Pens' other goalie prospects will be ready.
I even think this would make sense from a management standpoint! I'd be willing to consider more outrageous proposals too, because I really really want Flower to stay in Pittsburgh. (Expose Murray in the expansion draft? Bad asset management but my heart says it's better than losing Flower.) He's their longest-tenured player, everyone loves him, he loves everyone, he's such a great guy. He was last season's team MVP and then the playoffs must have sucked so much for him (fuck you Nealer), he should get more chances to win a Cup with this team. Many more chances. And Cups. I want Flower to stay a Penguin forever, him and Sid and Geno and Tanger. (It'll be bad enough when Kuni leaves...)

- Things I wish I could: skip scenes of stories I'm writing to fill them in later. Instead I'm stuck because of stupid small details. I'd probably go ahead and post the first chapter (I'm writing a multi-chapter fic! My first one! This is exciting), if only I had a title…

- I was reminded today how much I hate scenes where character A repeatedly asks, or demands, B leave character A's room, or leave them alone, and B doesn't do it. Hate hate hate, and makes me physically uncomfortable. Often more so than actual assault scenes because it's much more often depicted positively by the author.

- Hockey! How did I ever keep up with things happening around the NHL? There is so much. I watched the Pens-Caps game and it was a lot of fun. Flower <3
Four games and Tanger is already injured -.- Sheary too. Also, it's been less than a month and I'm already angry at the DoPS again. Protect your players from other players, idiots.

- Our new third roommate moved in, and I'm optimistic it'll work out well. We probably don't have space in the kitchen for three people to cook at the same time, but maybe we'll find time every once in a while for all of us to eat together. I've been trying new recipes lately, shakshuka and briami for example were easy to make and delicious.

- I've been looking for jobs for a while now – okay officially it's been a while, actually it's only recently that I've made any real progress. (Probably not coincidentally, about 2-3 weeks after I adjusted my dosage of meds.) I have a short list of job ads that seem interesting, and a much longer list of jobs that I probably wouldn't mind doing for a while if there's nothing better. Today I found the first ad for a job that I'm genuinely excited about :) Ideally I want to finish my application letter tomorrow, I already know I'll be very nervous about it and overthink every sentence. Ah well. Adulting. Chocolate afterwards.

Yesterday I thought about how much fun it can be to mash together two fandoms who have absolutely nothing to do with each other. "But sometimes," I thought, "it's really hard, like, just as a random example of things I've been watching recently, Nirvana in Fire and hockey."
An hour later I had the basic premise of a story I'm not going to write.

I'll share though. )

I've mostly made muffins and cupcakes for so long that I forgot how annoying it is trying to find cake recipes that are slightly fancy but not too complicated. LB's birthday party is tomorrow, and he wants something with chocolate. Usually I like experimenting with new cakes, but this time I might just make a cake I already made once. (I think it was two years ago though so it'll be fine.)
I'm invited to his birthday party even though I know very few people who will be there. Half of his friends are mathematicians and half of them are musicians. So when he decided he wanted to do a quiz, he made up questions that are half math/half music knowledge, some of them I don't even understand. I'm curious to see how that will go ^^

I got my Yuletide assignment! It's a prompt I'd been thinking of writing a treat for anyway :) Not that I ever managed to write a treat before. This year there are a few letters I like, so maybe I'll manage at least one or two?
For my assignment I already have a (very rough) outline. Though now that I think about it, it maybe kiiiinda skirts close to one of their DNWs. (A matter of definition, really.) I'll have to revise it a bit.

Sidney Crosby has another concussion -.- Sucks. Hopefully it's not severe.
The season hasn't even started yet and I already am reminded why I watch less TV in winter: just keeping up with hockey news takes a lot of time. It's fun too though. Pens season opener on Thursday, middle of the night but I'll stay up for that one. Pens-Caps is always great :) (though it would be more fun if Sid were playing...)
schneefink: (FF Kaylee in hammock)
I played Pokémon Go for the first time today! I can now, because I have a new phone. I needed a new phone so I could install the messenger my mom uses to send pictures from Bolivia (Signal), which didn't work on my old one. (I kept putting it off because I was afraid it would be a hassle, then of course there was a problem with the sim card for the new phone that took hours to solve, ugh.)
Anyway, now I am a pokémon trainer. I hope it'll get me to take a walk on days I am otherwise too lazy to leave the house, let's see how well it'll work.

Now that DD has moved in it's much easier to watch hockey games together :) We watched the first game of the World Cup yesterday, Europe vs. USA, and were surprised and happy when Europe won 3-0. Tomorrow we'll be rooting for team Europe to beat the Czechs.

Today we watched "X-Men: Apocalypse." Not a particularly good movie, but parts of it were entertaining. It's a bit of a problem that I like neither this Charles nor this Erik, especially Charles. Arrogant naïve mind-raping stupid asshole. Ah well, some of the action scenes were nice.

Who would be Ronon Dex' favorite hockey player? A few years ago maybe Iginla, but now... maybe Ovi? Shea Weber? Jamie Benn? Sid?

My first instinct is that Ronon plays forward, but I could see defense as well. Satedan hockey probably worked a bit differently anyway, maybe a mix between Earth hockey and bandy.
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
Thanks for all the supportive comments on my last post <3 I'll talk with my parents this weekend and with my therapist & psychiatrist next week and then decide.

My aunt visits tomorrow and I wanted to clean up my apartment, but then MSZ called and we went swimming, which was great, and then just when I got home the Oilers traded Hall for Larsson and the Habs traded PK for Shea Weber, which, what. What even happened there. How. Why.
So that took me the rest of my evening to get my head around, and I'll probably need another week to process it. Hall for Larsson is another indication that Shero is a trade wizard. PK Subban in Preds yellow is just... weird.
Someone please get Carey and Chucky out of Montréal.
There appears to be such a big difference between how scouts/team management evaluate players and how fans do, it's weird.
(Oh and also Stamkos re-signed with Tampa at a discount, which I half expected. It's funny how little people care about that right now.)

Tomorrow morning my aunt is visiting (I really still need to clean) and then DD and I are going to the natural history museum for Asteroid Day, because space is cool. (We'll probably talk about hockey the entire time. Or half the time, because space really is cool.)
