schneefink: (ahsoka)
Face of(f) the Enemy
gen, 2272 words
h/c prompts: torture, interrogation, septicemia/infected wounds, major illness or injury (wildcard), loss of power (bonus)
Content notes: the above + loss of limbs (temporary), self-harm
Summary: Tiye opened her eyes and saw her own face look back at her, with a curious, detached expression like the one a large predator might wear when regarding a strange but irrelevant bug.

Notes: Unbeta-ed idfic, written for the h/c bingo February amnesty challenge. I blame araline for the title.
I've wanted to write fic for "my" D&D game for a while now, and when I found the h/c bingo challenge that was the perfect opportunity. I started writing this after session 34, and as of 36 it has already been thoroughly jossed.

I went climbing with LB and friends yesterday and today I remember that I have back muscles. Cool (ouch.) I'm thinking of signing up for a climbing class at 7am (because all the other ones are booked out), I'm half hoping someone will talk me out of it.

We were climbing until 21:10 and I thought the timing was great because it meant the last two hours before the NHL trade deadline I was too busy to be nervous, then I checked my phone in the locker room and it said "the Penguins have made two trades," very informative. I'm satisfied with the trades the team made, but I'm also very curious what they're going to do with so many defensemen.
Then the Pens lost against Chicago and let their biggest asshole score a hat trick, boo.

DD has an exam today and afterwards we'll watch the last two NiF episodes together :) And then I have a long list of recs to send her, I love sharing cool stuff.

2017, day 1

Jan. 1st, 2017 07:56 pm
schneefink: (A:tla group hug)
Happy 2017!
I celebrated New Year's Eve with Lio&Maria and Lisa&Nati, and Maria tried out about ten or so different cocktails, yum. Three other people showed up for a while and drew Lio into a discussion on politics, and I hated that on the last day of 2016 while I wanted to play a game and enjoy myself I couldn't help but hear someone argue on the other side of the room that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were equally bad options. Bleh. Fortunately they left before midnight. We sang a bit (including to Level Up and This Year), and after midnight we played four rounds of cards and I won all of them :) I came home so late that I narrowly missed OT of the Pens-Habs game, but the Pens won so that was good too.

I wrote two stories for Yuletide this year:
See Your Silhouette for [personal profile] lilacsigil
Fandom: Gladiator – Dami Im
1.3k, background White Warrior/Princess
Summary: She hadn't seen the Princess in fifty years.
My assignment. It was pretty frustrating because the prompts were good and I had ideas, but it was hard to put them together into a story, and at some point I planned something much longer and more complex before I condensed it to its current length. It probably made the story better, but there were a few elements I'm sorry I lost.

Step Forward for [archiveofourown.org profile] alessandriana
Fandom: Nirvana in Fire
1.6k, gen, canon-divergent AU
Summary: Jingyan had known this day would come, but for years xiao-Shu had done him the favor of allowing him not to think about it.
The first time I actually finished a Yuletide treat! Jingyu dies from natural cases and so there is no conspiracy. I'd started sketching this AU before I even saw [livejournal.com profile] alessandriana's letter, and when I saw that she prompted it it gave me the push I needed to finish. I really like this AU, and there's a possibility that I'm not done with it yet because I keep thinking of more things that would be interesting to explore in it.

There are many Yuletide stories I still want to read (thanks to everyone who recced stories), but I decided to put those aside for now and try to write something for [community profile] fandom_stocking.
I also still need to do my 2016 year review, aaand I decided to try and do at least half of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge this year, so at least 7 days.

Day 1: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Huh. I think I'll cheat a bit and refer to "Step Forward" above, because I really like the concept of this AU and I feel like I wrote a good look into it.

Dark Blue Skies, a Steerswoman fic: "In the third year of Willam's apprenticeship with Corvus, Abremio came to Wulfshaven." It's one of my longer works and I'm quite proud of how it turned out.

Assuming Shape, a Young Avengers fic, Teddy Altman's mom's backstory. (I can't remember if her name is from canon somewhere or if I took it from another fic.) I wrote it because I wanted to make her more real (which makes canon even sadder) and I feel like I succeeded.

NiF fic

schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
Writing every day in November: week one was a success, feels good. So far I have written snippets of one sort-of fusion, time travel, a canon divergent AU, post-canon fix-it with magic, and an ep 54 missing scene, all for Nirvana in Fire. I made some structuring progress for my Yuletide fic too, I think it's coming along.
(Other than that last week was unfortunately unproductive -.- This is most likely related. I'm not looking forward to therapy on Tuesday at all.)

I finished one ficlet:
New Life, Different Fur
NiF, 330 words, short silly post-canon fluff with magic.
I wanted to write post-canon fluff for [personal profile] naye and found out that in this fandom that's harder than I anticipated… I accidentally wrote three snippets of spoilers ), I meant to fix it but the angst refused to leave. So I had to come up with something else.
schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
this once, don't wake
1.6k, gen, time travel fix-it
Summary: This time, Liyang knows what is in the wine.

The first of several NiF time travel fix-it stories I want to write, it's a trope that works well for this canon. First, one of my (many) favorite minor characters: Grand Princess Liyang.
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
First Rest
1.2k, gen, post-canon, Weaver & Hunter
Summary: spoilers for the books )

Author's note: This is the story I wanted after finishing the series, so I had to write it myself. Unbetaed; I'm not completely happy with it but close enough, and if I don't post it now I might never.
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
I wrote a short fic:
Accept No Substitute, aka "I have Feelings about Marc-Andre Fleury staying a Penguin and I'm projecting them onto Geno Because."

I don't dislike Murray, I just love Flower more.
schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
I should be writing my thesis instead of fic, but better than nothing?

Sufficiently Advanced Crystal Orbs, for [personal profile] nenya_kanadka
Steerswoman & surprise crossover, gen, 1.4k
Summary: Willam opens a wizard's chest and finds something unexpected.

Some [community profile] fandom_stocking recs: Babylon 5, Leverage/BtVS, Hockey RPF, Star Wars:TFA )
schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
For the first time this winter, we had snow in Vienna today! According to the radio it started around 6am and when I got up (around 11) there was a thin layer of white outside and it was still snowing lightly for a short time. Finally :)

For Yuletide this year I wrote Steerswoman fic: Dark Blue Skies
Summary: In the third year of Willam's apprenticeship with Corvus, Abremio came to Wulfshaven.

Thanks to [personal profile] isis and [personal profile] sholio for the help. It's not perfect, but I'm proud of this one. 9.8k! My second-longest published fic, and the longest since 2011. It's in the smallest fandom I've written in so far and especially at first it was a bit disappointing that so few people read it, but I got some lovely comments which made up for it :)

More about the writing process )
schneefink: (Fleury)
I wrote fic for [personal profile] downjune for Hockey Festivus:
Stick Your Head Out
Gen, 2.9k, magic AU
Characters: Phil Kessel, Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins ensemble
Summary: Phil wasn't sure how well he'd fit in with his new team. Rumors around the league said that Malkin was a bear, and he didn't know what else they had in the locker room.

I turned the Penguins into magical creatures because it was fun. I'm not sure which one is my favorite, probably Dana Heinzelmann, or Phil or Geno or Flower. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and it's one of my most popular fics so far, which was a nice surprise. Many thanks to [personal profile] snickfic, who made me add a crucial scene.
schneefink: (Fleury)
For [community profile] trickortreatex I wrote fic for [personal profile] snickfic:

Sacrifice the Body
gen, 1.4k
Characters: Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Olli Maatta
Additional Tags: Ritual Sacrifice, Hockey Gods (CNTW)
Summary: Before every season, the hockey gods demand a sacrifice.

I wanted to write something about human sacrifice for the hockey gods for a long time, but for some reason I only got the mental image I needed to build a story around (Sid cutting lines into Olli) after reading [personal profile] snickfic's prompts. I'm actually pretty happy with how this story came out. There's a scene in this 'verse with Sid and Flower that I really like but that didn't fit, I might write another fic or a drabble.
schneefink: (Fleury)
I wrote a short kinkmeme fill: Emotional Men (Flower/Geno, 475 words)
Summary: Q: Are there movies that always make you cry?
Evgeni Malkin: "Of course. I'm emotional guy, I'm like smile but if bad end, I'm crying."
Marc-André Fleury: "I don't cry, I'm a man."

I debated whether or not to post it to the Archive, then I thought "fuck it why not." There is not enough Geno/Flower there anyway.
I'm stalled on the other fic I'm currently writing because I can't figure out who goes where during team cuddling, but it has background Sid/Geno/Flower and I'm looking forward to when I can finally finish it.

Yesterday was not a particularly good day. Among other things I botched the cake I was making (turns out the "new" second-hand baking form is not tight and half the dough ended up on the bottom of the oven – fortunately mom had a sponge cake in her freezer, otherwise LB would have had no birthday cake) and dad accidentally smashed my favorite cup, the clay one with the turtles.
But today was better :) It's getting really cold outside, I took my skates from my parents' place yesterday but I think I'll have to visit again soon to get my gloves and winter jacket. The results from the election in Vienna are not as bad as feared, but we'll see how it develops.

I started watching "Veronica Mars", to my surprise. I checked out the first episode after seeing a gif set on Tumblr and I like it so far. Later I scrolled by a Tumblr post saying "the three main characters from the last things you read/watched/played are now your team during the zombie apocalypse", I think a team consisting of Veronica, Alexander Hamilton, and Toby Daye could be fun.
schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
I'm a bit better than yesterday. LK came by with a care package, meds and tea and a USB drive full of audiobooks and movies. Friends are the best <3

I wrote fic! About Dutch & Johnny's friendship, because it's so great. You should all watch Killjoys in case you haven't yet.

Sitting by the Tree (2112 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Killjoys (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Dutch (Killjoys), Johnny Jaqobis
Additional Tags: Pre-Series, 5+1 Things
Summary: Dutch and Johnny become partners. No, they do not want to have sex with each other.
Or, five times someone thinks they want to sleep together and one time they sleep together.
schneefink: Babylon 5 (Bab5)
What an arc. Sometimes – quite often, actually , – TCW has plots that strongly remind me of h/c fanfic. This one in particular was excellent slavefic.

More details )

Then I wrote fic about that AU. In one day. Huh. That was sort of an accident, looks like I really didn't want to study yesterday.

Kadavo (1809 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: CT-7567 | Rex, Obi-Wan Kenobi
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Slavery, Torture
Summary: Rex isn't sure if it's been seven weeks or eight since they arrived on Kadavo.
schneefink: (Fleury)
Months ago I asked [archiveofourown.org profile] araline for a writing prompt to distract myself from hockey stress. She gave me "Sid is secretly an alien and his parents want to take him back." I meant to write a short snippet.

Home Is Where My Rink Is (6256 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins Ensemble
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Aliens
Summary: Sid always knew that his parents wanted him to return to his home planet. He'd hoped it wouldn't be so soon.

I'm not completely happy with it, but it's finished, and some parts I like a lot. Plus, it was an excuse to write about Sid&Flower, BFFs.

I also recently wrote a kinkmeme fill that I forgot to announce here, just something short and quick that made my id happy:

Captain's Mark (562 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury
Additional Tags: Possessive Behavior, Tattoos
Summary: The team became completely and irrevocably his the moment they gave him the C.

The NHL draft is on Friday&Saturday. I'm nervous that the Penguins will do something stupid, like give up some of our top prospects for a too expensive older winger. There are rumors they are after Kessel or Sharp, both of which don't seem like good ideas... Of course I don't know more than the GMs whose job it is to think about these things, but sometimes their decisions seem really obviously bad. (I'm not talking about Despres for Lovejoy - fans should get over that one imo - but things like the Scuderi signing.)
In general I'm more nervous about bad hockey trades than I was about pretty much any fictional canon I was a fan of screwing up. Probably because it's not that difficult to ignore/handwave fictional canon, but hard to do so with a RL team, and one bad trade can screw up a team for years. (I feel so sorry for Caps fans about Forsberg.)

In non-hockey news I donated blood today and it was quicker and easier than anytime before, that was nice. I like donating blood, makes me feel like I do something good. And I was told I have pretty veins.

I had a moderately successful day studying at uni, always good. Tomorrow I have to get up early :( and we're going to buy our kitchen :)
schneefink: picture of Relena looking at the viewer (GW Relena)
Flying for Beginners (500 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Hockey RPF, Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sidney Crosby, Caine Wise, Jupiter Jones
Additional Tags: Crossover
Summary: Sid learns how to skate on air.

I really wanted to see this crossover. Just something short and silly I wrote a few days ago, and I'm posting it today because I need a distraction before the game tonight. (Nerves. What is this stupid sports thing even.) DD said she'll bribe me to write a sequel, so there might be one, but probably only after the DVD is out.
schneefink: (Fleury)
Yesterday was the NHL trade deadline, and the Pens traded away Robert Bortuzzo and Simon Despres. From a hockey standpoint I understand the moves (even the Despres-Lovejoy trade: if Despres manages to finally consistently play well it'll look very stupid in hindsight, but the Pens want to make a Cup run now and for the future they have D prospects that they apparently think are more promising.) From a more person-oriented view I feel sorry for both of them, especially Despres who just recently bought a new home. This was the first deadline without constant rumors that he was going to be traded, and then this.

I used Bortuzzo's trade as motivation to finally finish the AO3 version of a kinkmeme fill I wrote last fall. I never thought I'd write hookerfic, but now I did, and yesterday I found myself plotting an mpreg story. (That I'm probably not going to write.)

Drawn to You (7418 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Beau Bennett/Robert Bortuzzo
Characters: Beau Bennett, Robert Bortuzzo
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Prostitution, Alternate Universe - Soul Bond, Trope Inversion
Summary: Robert never thought he would find his soulmate. Soulbonding with the hooker he picked up is a surprise.
schneefink: Parker grinning, from First David Job (Parker smiling before jumping off a buil)
I'm back in Vienna and there's almost no snow left :( On the positive side, I finally have a good bed again.

Yuletide reveals! It was my first time participating in Yuletide and I wrote two stories, I call it a success.

Losing Down (4279 words) by schneefink for lightgetsin
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Simon Despres, Scott Harrington, Beau Bennett, Pittsburgh Penguins Ensemble
Summary: It's Simon's sixth training camp in Pittsburgh.

This was my main assignment. The prompt was basically "baby Pens gen" and that gave me a lot to work with. At first I wanted to write something about the "usual suspects", Beau and Borts and Olli and Kappy, but while doing research I was reminded about Simon Despres and I just had to write about him. He's so interesting! I'm really happy he's having a good season. If he gets traded it better be for a fantastic return.
I did a lot of research to write this. The only detail I changed deliberately was putting Beau and Simon on the same practice unit during camp, but I'm pretty sure nobody noticed ^^ The fic probably could have used another beta step, but at one point I just wanted to finish it because I was getting nervous about the deadline and I'm pretty sure I was never going to be perfectly satisfied. I'm mostly happy with it.
The easiest thing about this story was the title, that almost never happens to me.

Make the Night a Little Less Loud (1165 words) by schneefink for yabamena
Fandom: The Maze Runner (2014)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Thomas (Maze Runner), Minho (Maze Runner)
Summary: Thomas and Minho spend a night in the Maze together.

A treat I wrote mostly spontaneously after I watched the movie. I enjoyed the writing process a lot because it wasn't hard :)

The Capitals won the Winter Classic against the Hawks! \o/ On a PPG on a weak call, but whatever. The Hawks are a very good team with two recent Cups, they've been lucky enough. They had more PPs anyway including a long 5-on-3.
schneefink: (Fleury)
I wrote fic! "Just" a collection of drabbles. I wrote it in one day, many thanks to [personal profile] snickfic for reassuring me that it's worth posting.

Rainbow Patches on Our Jerseys (One Day) (515 words) by schneefink
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Brian Dumoulin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Sidney Crosby, Bob Errey, Brandon Sutter
Additional Tags: 5 Things, Coming Out, drabbles
Summary: Five people who are not the first NHL player to come out.

I used to write a lot of drabbles, I forgot how much I love them. There's something extremely satisfying about expressing something in 100 words. The strict word limit means that you have to be careful about each and every word.
schneefink: (FF Kaylee excited)
Sarah Altman is one of my favorite Young Avengers characters, even though we see so little of her. So I wrote fic.

I wrote most of this a while ago, didn't find a beta, so I finally decided to post it anyway before I forget. I feel like there might still be parts missing, but it's never going to be perfect.

Assuming Shape (4044 words) by schneefink

Characters: Sarah Altman, Teddy Altman
Additional Tags: Shapeshifting
Summary: Sarah Altman lives on Earth for sixteen years.
schneefink: (FF River and Kaylee)
I wrote fic! \o/

Most of it I wrote in the back of my debate block when I needed a break during last weekend's tournament. Not sure where the idea suddenly came from, but I currently have almost ten Pens magic AUs floating around so apparently I really want to see supernatural hockey players.

Comfortable In This Place (1244 words) by schneefink
