Last lines

Yesterday I did this meme for first lines, today: last lines of my last twenty fics.

Patterns:
- five lines directly refer to something happening in the future, and with context it's even more
- seven include dialogue
- eleven are quite short

Actually I'm satisfied, or at least not unhappy, with more of these than I anticipated. My favorite is from "Assuming Shape": it leads directly to the scene in the comic, and considering how that ended and what I wrote in the previous paragraphs it still makes me emotional every time I reread it. (Nothing says that this can't be an AU where she survives! Still.)

Every time I see someone mentioning that LJ/DW are so much quieter than they used to be (sad but true) I want to post something, even if it's something silly, like a "still here"-flag. Usually I write two lines and then stop though. I have a word document with posts I've been meaning to make that's quite long by now…

Writing problems:
- write something silly that's not meant to be serious
- get good concrit
- accidentally take it seriously
- be too embarrassed to edit because it's so silly why did I write this in the first place *facepalm*

I was invited to a Harry Potter-themed birthday party this week, it was fun. Everyone was sorted into a house when they entered, and there were house points to earn, like for good costumes or themed food/drinks or games. Our Ravenclaw head of house won a round of Werewolf in dramatic fashion, for example :)
One of the ways one could win points was by coming up with Harry Potter-themed pick-up lines, that was also fun. My personal favorite was "It's been too long since I've seen you outside of the Mirror of Erised."

Yuletide fic: Haven't made much progress yet, I've been concentrating on NiF fic (not for Yuletide.) There's this one character I don't have a good feel for, and she's quite important so that's annoying. I could write her in two different ways and it would result in two different stories, one way that makes it much easier for me to empathize with her and one way that I suspect is a little closer to canon. I want to write the latter, but if I'm blocked for much longer I may write the first version.

First line meme
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories. See if there are any patterns. Read more... )

Of the 20:
- three open with dialogue
- eight open with a name
- ten have some kind of time reference
- ten have some kind of location reference
Just being practical.
(Personally I often find last lines more difficult to come up with than opening lines. Maybe I should do this with last lines, except I worry that I'd be unhappy with half of them.)

Last time I did this in December and it was fun, but last December was busy so I'm doing it now. Pick a day (or more) in March (plus/minus a day or two, just in case) and give me something, a question or topic, to talk about.

March 9 - Favourite Babylon 5 character and what you like about them.
March 14 - a female hockey player/women's hockey
March 16 - talk about a few SF/F books you love (or that you reread)
March 19 - what does it take for you to get fannish about something?
March 21 - What makes you stop being fannish about something or have you ever just quit, cold turkey, a fandom? If you haven't, what do you think would make you quit?
March 22 -
March 23 -
March 24 - Travel. Places have you been, enjoyed/hated, plan to go, on your bucket list, etc.
March 25 -
March 26 -
March 27 - STAR WARS
March 28 -
March 29 -
March 30 -
March 31 - favorite foods to cook and to have other people make for you

How it works: you comment saying you want to do the meme, I give you an age (please tell me how old you currently are as well, because I can never remember how old people are), and you fill out the meme questions with what applied to you back then, and what applies to you now.
[personal profile] naye gave me 16, so 2007 (my birthday is in January.) I added a bit to the replies.

[personal profile] theladyscribe is hosting a multifandom dreamwidth friending meme. She suggested that everyone also do the December posting meme, so: pick a day (or more) in December (plus/minus a day or two, just in case) and give me something, a question or topic, to talk about.
ETA: December is over, I'll get to the rest later.

Dec 2 - if Marvel does another Young Avengers series, what would you like to see in it?
Dec 3 - what do you study, and why?
Dec 5 - What's your headcanon/backstory about Ronon Dex?
Dec 7 - Do you write things you want to read, or do you read things that are different from what you write? Any tropes/premises/worlds that are favorites, in reading and/or in writing?
Dec 8 - What does your favorite vacation look like?
Dec 9 - what one thing would you most like to do in your life that you think is impossible to achieve for whatever reason (financial, laws of physics, etc.)?
Dec 11 - Which SGA character(s) do you identify with most? Why? (If it's not too personal) If you don't ID with any, whose voice comes most naturally to you?
Dec 12 - what's a favorite physical place of yours, and why do you love it?
Dec 13 - What's your comfort meal?
Dec 14 - I would love to hear about you learning to skate, or if you already knew how, about learning to skate in hockey skates!
Dec 18 - Has playing hockey given you new insight into how the game is written? What does fandom get right and what does it get wrong? That kind of thing.
Dec 20 - being Austrian in fandom
Dec 22 - what was your first fandom and do you still read/watch/write it?
Dec 23 - Tell me about your favorite books from your childhood.

Jan 04 - comics
Jan 04 - I would like to know about being able to read Geno in Russian. :D I assume he comes across differently in a language he's fluent in. Tell me ALL your Geno-in-Russian thoughts.
Jan 15 - Talk to me about Doctor Who sometime? Who is your favourite Doctor, and why?
Feb 13 - Spaceships!

Books

Book meme:
List 10 books that have stayed with you. Don't take but a few minutes, and don't think too hard - they don't have to be the 'right' or 'great' works, just ones which have touched you.

Almost all of the books that came to mind where books from my childhood, and some of them I haven't read in ages and/or wouldn't recommend. In no particular order and with some words because I feel like it.

1. Dragon's Blood by Jane Yolen
One of the first books I felt fannish about. Dragons! The real hero of the story was obviously Akki, and I don't want to read the book again because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't hold up well, but dragons :)

2. The Seer and the Sword by Victoria Hanley
I read the book again later and it didn't hold up, but at the time when I read it I enjoyed it a lot. Spoilers )

3. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
I haven't read it in forever. I thought about putting the Silmarillion on the list instead because I read that one so often I knew all of the family trees by heart, but the Lord of the Rings came first.

4. Momo by Michael Ende
My mom's favorite book, and I love it too. The importance of listening and stories may be my favorite parts.

5. The Carpet Makers (Die Haarteppichknüpfer) by Andreas Eschbach
The book that taught me that each story consists of hundreds of smaller stories all woven together, some with bigger and some with smaller scale but that doesn't mean they're less important.

6. The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov
To be honest at least half of the reason why this one stayed with me is because that scene in the third book that showed me the appeal of h/c.

7. Märchenmond by Wolfgang and Heike Hohlbein
Okay, usually I tried to put the English titles here, but "Magic Moon" just sounds so much sillier than Märchenmond (...because I never thought about the latter. Whatever.) Actually I think I should reread those, they're good fantasy. And unlike most of W. Hohlbein's books they're not formulaic, have good characters, and actually have plot twists.

8. I, Robot by Isaac Asimov
Robots! Susan Calvin! I find it very amusing that Asimov's Laws of Robotics are still so famous today even though Asimov wrote hundreds of short stories about the fact that they wouldn't work. But they're still a good guideline, I suppose.

9. The City of Dreaming Books (Die Stadt der Träumenden Bücher) by Walter Moers
The first Zamonien book I read was "Die 13½ Leben des Käpt'n Blaubär", and I loved how full of ideas it is. City of Dreaming Books has that, the same great writing style, and it's a love letter to books and reading and writing at the same time.

10. Eine Reise nach Gnomiland by unknown (I just checked, it's not even written anywhere... it just says "by IKEA family.)
The oldest here. It's half a picture book, in a very large format, and LB and I loved it when we were kids. I can still recall over half of the pictures from the top of my head.
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (DW TARDIS)
To distract myself and cheer myself up ($%#§& cramps) here's a fannish tropes meme I saw in several places:

1. genderswap
2. bodyswap
3. drunk!fic
4. huddling for warmth
5. pretending to be married
6. secretly a virgin
7. amnesia
8. cross-dressing
9. forced to share a bed
10. truth or dare
11. historical AU
12. accidental-baby-acquisition
13. apocalypse fic
14. telepathy
15. High School / College

Pick one, give me a fandom that you know I know and a character(s)/pairing, and I'll tell you which story I would write for it!

Just looking at the list already gave me some ideas, and because it's unlikely someone will ask for those specifically have some snippets:

SGA, Ronon, telepathy )

SGA, Ronon and Teyla, High School/College )

Leverage, Sophie and Nate, Truth or Dare )

A:tla/Legend of Korra, Toph and Lin, accidental baby acquisition )

Sarah Jane Adventures, Clyde, Rani, and Luke, drunk!fic )
