DD and I went to see "Ghostbusters" yesterday. It was exactly as I hoped for: good entertainment and fun. spoilers )

There is at least one vid already, Cheap Thrills by [personal profile] such_heights. Composed entirely of trailer footage, but I don't think I'd have noticed.
schneefink: (FF Kaylee in hammock)
The NHL season is over! In theory that means I have more time to watch other things now. I've already started rewatching a few episodes of Leverage.
Last year's Festivids had two "Great British Bake-Off" vids that I enjoyed, All Rise by [personal profile] cosmic_llin and Cake to Bake by [personal profile] ohvienna. I watched a few episodes on the flight back from the US to Europe and they were nice.
I have a sudden urge to check out more cooking shows, because the dishes look nice and maybe for inspiration and maybe just because. But there are many of them! Which ones are your favorites, any you would recommend?

Last D&D session I got 300 extra XP for creative problem-solving approaches, I'm quite proud of myself. Illusion spells really lend themselves to tricks quite nicely. Unfortunately none of my original plans worked because one party member didn't want to play along and we ended up in a fight, but luckily my estimation of levels was wrong: our DM said our opponents looked like elite soldiers, but apparently after almost two days of being animate our characters had already leveled up enough to defeat them. Both people we wanted to help died though, and the only surviving opponent escaped, so we don't even have more information about what the hell is going on than we did before. (We had to hurry in the end because one player had to leave and the DM ended with "yes okay it's obvious that you're going to kill the remaining two, here's your loot list"; only afterwards I realized it would have been smarter not to kill them and interrogate them instead. Missed opportunity.)
I'm very appreciative of the fact that we play living statues and therefore don't have to eat. Makes the question of supply a lot easier. I really liked how in the last two Temeraire books it was emphasized how much in warfare is about having sufficient supply (especially when it comes to dragons!)

It looks like the wisdom tooth surgery spot is infected again, nooo :( It's swollen and it hurts. Ugh. I've also been tired the whole day, this might be related.
schneefink: (FF Kaylee in hammock)
Procrastinating as usual. (I saw "Black Wolves" by Kate Elliott in the bookstore yesterday and was proud of myself for not buying it to read immediately. Low standards.) Have some belated Doctor Who thoughts.

The surgery yesterday went well, and if I don't open my mouth and remember to keep my cheek cool, which I mostly do, it only hurts a little. Eating is harder, but at least I made a good risotto with mushrooms today.

Glorious by [personal profile] lilly_the_kid (The Eagle)
The first time I watched this I mostly enjoyed the music and the sort-of-haunting atmosphere. The second time I remembered exactly how full of tropes the movie was (it was great.) The third time I realized how well the vid made it all fit together, "never die like you" and "I felt his hand" and the eagle etc., and the next ten plus times I enjoyed all of it.

Been Better by [personal profile] lithiumdoll (Killjoys)
Dutch! Johnny! (and D'Avin) (Almost) all of the best scenes of the show in a great vid, to a music that drew me in. Faster than rewatching the whole season and almost as much fun.

From Here On Out by [personal profile] mithborien (Teen Wolf)
Scott & Stiles <3 Their friendship was my favorite part of Teen Wolf when I still watched it, and this vid is a great reminder of all the best parts.
schneefink: (Fleury)
There is currently a vidding love meme going on. You should go and tell vidders how great they are. I'm being reminded of many vids I love, I should rec more of them. To start with, 4:

Mad Max: Fury Road:
Na Na Na by [personal profile] violace
The aftermath is secondary.
I watched this vid maybe twenty times or more. (I also watched the MCR music video and then read some MCR fic.) It's a perfect fit for the movie.

Making Waves by [archiveofourown.org profile] niyalune
Can you hear my voice this time?
I found this one via a rec post by [personal profile] goodbyebird that I'm still making my way through (and I spent way too much time thinking about if I should put this one before or after "Na Na Na". I put it after because the other one has some of it in Immortan Joe's PoV, but it doesn't really matter.) They complement each other well, and both have that "fuck yeah"-feeling to go with the explosions.

Phil Kessel ft. Taylor Swift:

PHIL KESSEL IS A PITTSBURGH PENGUIN. Fuck the Toronto media. Rumors say Jeff Zatkoff showed this vid to his teammates on the plane, that makes it even more hilarious.

Karaoke

Jul. 31st, 2015 12:44 pm
schneefink: (Feldgatter)
As a going-away party for two friends who are leaving for the US for a year we went to a karaoke bar yesterday. (I recently found out that there's a new & apparently better karaoke bar in Vienna, I'm looking forward to trying it out soon.) As always I forgot to prepare songs in advance, so I had my usual problem that I didn't want to sing songs that are "too easy", and the ones that seem interesting are often ones where I only know about 85% of the melody. Sometimes when I tell people what songs I'm thinking of singing they seem surprised; fanvids are the source of many of the songs I listen to the most and the mix can apparently be rather strange, or not what they expect. Last time I sang Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance (SGA vid by kitakatzz) and Starships by Nicki Minaj (multifandom vid by bironic.)

This time I sang Handlebars by Flobots (Doctor Who vid by flummery) (without before thinking about the fact exactly how not easy it is to sing, especially if you don't know the text 100% and the text on the monitor is too slow after every paragraph) and My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark by Fall Out Boy (which I found funny because I thought I only knew the band through bandom fic, turns out they also wrote the song that last season's Pens promos used) and a few easy songs with friends (Mamma Mia, Winds of Change etc. – some of my friends really can't sing btw.) I got a compliment from a stranger about my singing and my song choice, with a comment that the microphone I'd used wasn't working, which I hadn't even noticed because I hardly ever sing with microphones.

I also wanted to sing Parachute by Cheryl Cole (Leverage vid by thingswithwings) but wasn't sure of the whole melody, and How Far We've Come by Matchbox Twenty (Homestuck vid by Alexandra Murphy) but they didn't have it in their catalogue. (There are so many vids set to How Far We've Come: Some I know include a Community vid by purplefringe, CA:WS vid by kaydeefalls, and I could swear there was a specific Doctor Who vid to that song centering on the episode with the Master where the Time Lords came back and I looked for it for way too long until I realized I'm thinking about a twelve-second-clip from the fantastic Tenth Doctor Musical by di_br.) Next time.

I had to leave early because I thought I had a lot to do today, but two of the things were called off so now I unexpectedly actually have some time that is less busy than expected. Still a lot to do, and I'm skipping preparation meetings for EUDC next week, but I can use the break. So much that over the weekend I'm going away with friends for nothing but swimming and barbecue and absolutely no guilt about things I should be doing (at least that's the plan), I'm really looking forward to it.
In conclusion, I should go to Karaoke more often :)
schneefink: (Fleury)
I wanted to rec these for a while, and I'm procrastinating on other things. If you appreciate recs like this I'd love it if you could drop me a note, so that I know I'm not just doing these for myself :-)

No Word for This by [archiveofourown.org profile] Sonia_vice
Gabriel Landeskog/Danny Briére, 160k
Summary: They don't know what they're doing. But they're doing it anyway.
Why I love it: Every once in a while I complain that I want more hockey in hockey fics, and this series is a fantastic example of things I want more of. It's very clear that these characters are hockey players, and it's very grounded in the everyday reality of what that means, wins and losses and team and what the game means to them. And yet they're people at the same time: their private lives influence their professional lives and vice versa, and their different roles on the team affect their relationship. Both characters have their own issues to deal with, and sometimes they can share and help each other but sometimes they can't. I never would have thought of that pairing, and I'm not a big Avs fan, but the author does a great job selling me on a pairing that nobody thinks will work, even in the story, but somehow it does.
The author wrote the series during the season, following actual events, so the series also reflects how crazy a hockey season can be. There are many minor characters, family and team mostly, and I really like how they fit in. I like how the team is portrayed: it might be a kind of family, but that doesn't mean it's perfect.
To be honest I haven't reread the whole series since it was recently finished, because many chapters have a sort of grey mood, and in several it feels like the characters are struggling with something similar to depression which is sometimes hard for me to read. That's just another sign of how well it was done. The series doesn't have a perfect happy ending, but a hopeful conclusion, fitting with the tone of the story.

Hawks and Hands by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dira
Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski (main), 203k
Summary: Eighteen sex scenes strung together with angst and hockey.
Why I love it: A due South hockey AU that was recced to me several times before I finally read it (I kept putting it off because it starts with a funeral scene.) It does a great job with the hockey side of things, showing how it's an integral part of their lives, with games and bruises and team and supporting staff and all that comes with it. (With footnotes, even!) It was written about ten years ago, so I didn't even recognize the hockey characters, which I kind of liked.
I don't know dS, but all the characters were fully fleshed out and fit really well in their roles. Ben and Ray's relationship is great, how they both have their own issues but fit together well. The supporting cast was great as well, the Vecchios and Mark with two sides and coach Welsh and Hack and the rest of the team.
Midway through the story changes from a more hockey-focused one to a more crime-solving-focused one, but I liked that part too.

Make His Brown Eyes Blue by [archiveofourown.org profile] jezziejay
Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews, 9k
Summary: Jonny's an FBI agent. Patrick's on the Most Wanted list. Occasionally they tie each other up and make out.
Why I love it: And now for something completely different! An AU with no hockey at all, sort of completely ridiculous. I'm not sure why this one grabbed me and I immediately put it on my "to rec" list, but it's a lot of fun.

All hockey vids by [archiveofourown.org profile] pollyrepeat
Why I love them: There are five of them so far (everybody wants, change-over, Pilgrim, Houdini, and absolution), all of them Pens-focused, and all of them are great. (Getting better, even, which makes me really look forward to the next ones.) Her notes to "everybody wants", which imo could apply to all of them, say this "ended up turning into Polly Has Too Many Protective Feelings Re: Multi-Millionaires Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin (I KNOW) and Will Fight You in the Street About Them", which is a feeling I know well and that she conveys perfectly. The vids also show how pretty hockey can be, and sometimes how brutal.
schneefink: (FF Kaylee excited)
Late is better than never! Here's the festivid rec post that I wanted to make a month ago. I'm linking to the original announcement posts because a) some vids don't have a signed vid link posted and I'm too lazy to search for it, this way I can keep it consistent, b) the other posts, that are linked anyway, have very few comments and that looks very sad. I know almost none of the canon sources, but it didn't matter.

Know Today by [personal profile] absternr (The Brain Scoop)
A short, fun vid about Emily and being happy about Science. Makes me smile.

Summer Holiday by suburbannoir (Snowpiercer)
If the combination of title/song and movie didn't already clue you in: this is either very dark humor or complete crack, probably both. Hilarious but unsettling.

Moves Like Yaweh by [personal profile] jetpack_monkey (Prince of Egypt)
At first I thought the biggest reason for the song choice was probably the title, and that's still pretty great, but actually the lyrics fit amazingly well.

Take Me to Church by [personal profile] chaila (Luther)
So these two people are pretty messed up, wow. And now I can't associate this song with anything else, it fits perfectly.

All I Want by [personal profile] anoel (Life of Pi)
A beautiful vid, a quiet sort of tragedy with great visuals.

Shake It Off by [personal profile] violace (Maleficent)
This really made me want to watch the movie. Fun and pretty.

I am what I am by [personal profile] thingswithwings (Batman 1996)
Sparkly, cracky, hilarious, and completely and wonderfully unapologetic.

Long Live by [personal profile] gwenfrankenstien (Lord of the Rings Behind the Scenes Extras)
Has it really been so long since the LotR movies came out? They were fantastic. This vid is perfect for nostalgia.

Dance! by [personal profile] credoimprobus (Armour of God series)
Do you like Jackie Chan movies? Then you will love this vid.

Rama Llama Llama by [personal profile] shinealightonme (Emperor's New Groove)
Hilarious and adorable and great.
schneefink: Teyla and Sora with drinks, laughing (SGA Teyla and Sora cheerful)
A rec post (I've been meaning to make more for ages) because the alternative is to think/write about all the terrifying things happening around the world right now and I don't want to.

Nightfall (144189 words) by Leletha
Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Canon-divergent: 20 years after Chief Stoick’s wife and son were lost in a dragon raid, the Vikings of Berk shoot down a Night Fury…and its rider, a feral youth who believes he is a dragon.
Why I loved it: I loved how it portrayed dragon society, how it dealt with Hiccup's identity, I loved the strong strong friendship between Hiccup and Toothless. I loved Astrid here, growing up in a village without Hiccup and learning how to be a leader. There's also plot, Stoick having to face his fears, and Terrible Terrors. I followed this story as a WIP, eagerly awaiting every update and was never disappointed.

Aral Vorkosigan's Dog (76355 words) by Philomytha
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Rape/Non-Con
Summary: Illyan is assigned to watch Aral Vorkosigan during the Escobaran war. Soon he has to choose between his duty and his conscience, and the consequences rapidly get beyond him.
Why I loved it: This is a minor character PoV from a canon adventure; since I didn't know canon all cliffhangers actually worked for me, but other commenters said that it also works if one has read the book. The fic was recced on f_fa when someone requested loyalty kink and it definitely delivered, yum.

Happy, "Cosmos" vid by [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu
Science! Space! That feeling of wonder and joy at discovery.

In other news, I think I've given up on completing my marvel_bang story on time. I appear to be writing a Tommy Shepherd primer instead (no idea what I'm doing, I've never written a primer before.)
schneefink: Teyla and Sora with drinks, laughing (SGA Teyla and Sora cheerful)
(Huh, I have almost no SGA icons anymore...)

[personal profile] lilly_the_kid is the person who made Runs in the Family, an amazing John Sheppard vid to a song I never would've expected, cracky on the surface but also with a surprising amount of serious stuff and possible viewpoints etc. inside. (If you haven't seen it, go watch.)

Her new vid uses an imo unexpected song again: Next Contestant, a "Tony/Iron Man Suit (suit pov), Tony/everyone" vid.
Content Notes: [...] Mostly this is meant to be cracky fun, but I guess it can also be disturbing cracky fun. Or a wonderful romance. It's up to you.
The song works perfectly, I don't know how she does it. (I've seen it, but still.) I can't see the wonderful romance story, it's too creepy for that (especially once I remembered that there was actually a comics story like that), but it's definitely a romance of some kind, just not a very healthy one.
schneefink: Teyla and Sora with drinks, laughing (SGA Teyla and Sora cheerful)
I wanted to make a long list of Vividcon vid recs because there are so many amazing vids that I love and I want to share my excitement, but I think I have to split it into parts because otherwise I'll never get it done. So here, have some recs for great multifandom vids at Club Vivid 2012:

Starships! by [livejournal.com profile] bironic
aka "multifandom SPACE VID YAY"
To quote my own comment: I love this. It's glorious. I have a big stupid smile on my face and tears in my eyes. This is why I love spaceships (and why I stare at people who don't understand why, because spaceships!)

A Different Kind of Love Song by [personal profile] giandujakiss
Age of the geek, baby.
Fans! <3 This vid celebrates all fans and geeks and nerds on TV and everywhere, very happy-making.

Blue by [personal profile] kuwdora
I'm blue ah ba di ba da club vivid.
Wow, so many blue characters out there! Fun :)

Anything for Love by [personal profile] astolat and [personal profile] cesperanza
I would do anything for love, but I won't do that! ...oh, all right.
This vid only worked for me when I watched it the second time (because everyone was reccing it and I couldn't figure out why.) It's nicely meta and now it makes me grin widely. Fandom makes us do crazy things. (Entiiirely unrelated, I should finally write that post about OTW volunteering *g*)
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Teyla brown)
My favorite vids for Ford and Lorne - okay, so technically the only ones I know, but they are really good! And very different.

Falling Inside the Black by jemo
(scroll down)
A great Ford post-Wraith vid. Aiden :( All the little flashback moments are perfectly placed and make me miss him very much. Such a shame the writers never knew what to do with him. Fortunately fans do (sometimes! There are not enough Ford-centric fanworks.)

Be A Rockstar! by [livejournal.com profile] chayiana
Chayiana does the best SGA humor vids (and if you don't know them, go watch them all immediately.) This one is about Lorne and all the things he can't have because he's not a major character - poor Lorne! xD
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
For the Fandom Appreciation Challenge I finally wrote something I've been planning for months: recs for my favorite vids about Elizabeth Weir. It was through these vids that I fell in love with Elizabeth (at least the version in my head; headcanon > canon)

Just as a warning, I always feel that I'm very bad at describing what I love about vids. All of these are gorgeous and make me want to flail a lot, point at the screen and say "that! Did you see that? Isn't it brilliant?", and I've seen each of them easily more than ten times. Just imagine a lot more exclamation marks.

1. Welcome Home by [livejournal.com profile] permetaform
Summary: Her, city
Did I say ten times? I must have seen this one close to fifty times, I love it so much, and it's one of my favorite vids to watch when I had a bad day. It's a bit like dancing - the scene with the doors opening, just like the beginning of a dance, brilliant. The song has no lyrics, but the clips are perfectly chosen to fit the music and tell a story effortlessly. It's so beautiful when watching, and then there are the connections you discover, and just – wow. This is Elizabeth Weir as heart and soul of the Atlantis expedition.
(More and more eloquent recs linked here on fanlore, if you need more convincing.)
ETA: This one currently seems to be unavailable as well :( I hope it's only temporary, it was working fine yesterday.

2. Static by [livejournal.com profile] kitakatzz
Summary:The relationship of Elizabeth and McKay, from Elizabeth's POV. & fast-forwarded.
For some reason there are very few Rodney/Elizabeth or Rodney&Elizabeth fanworks, even though they were clearly very close. This wonderful vid shows their mutual affection, and it's also a great look at Elizabeth, with some lines that hit the nail on the head and perfectly fitting music and everything. The parts about Elizabeth and everyone's expectations about her and "I've been listening" because she cares and she wants to be found and just, yes.
(The old download link is invalid :( I asked the vidder if they could provide another one, but in the meantime it's unfortunately unavailable. I love this so much that I still recced it, though, just in case.)

3. Stand in the Rain by [livejournal.com profile] obfreak
Summary: A Leader must stand up against anything that comes at them, even when everything is falling down around them.
Oh, Elizabeth. This vid shows how strong she is, the enormous pressure she's under and how she's fighting to stay strong and keep standing. Sure, Elizabeth makes a lot of mistakes, but that's not surprising considering her position. Many great clips of her face, and then the ending.

4. Digital Ghost by [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl
Summary: A eulogy for Elizabeth Weir...Just take a closer look at what it is that´s really haunting you.
The key word for this vid is "haunting": Elizabeth and Atlantis and John, all haunting each other. A beautiful vid with a lot of delicious meta about Elizabeth and her relationship with the city and her people, especially John, with some simply brilliant transitions and a perfectly fitting song. The kind of vid that makes you dig deeper and find treasure.

(Coming (hopefully) soon: Vid recs for Teyla, John, that one Ford vid I found, and hopefully many more. There are so many great SGA vids.)
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Teyla and Sora cheerful)
I had all the best intentions to go to bed early, but my roommate decided to host another "informal gathering" that included too much alcohol and bad singing and it is now past midnight.

Have some vid recs! These are all vids from fandoms I don't or barely know, but enjoyed anyway.

We Rule the World, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, by [livejournal.com profile] cherryice
Ponies! Awww. This vid made me want to watch colorful ponies having fun and adventures. Cheerful and bouncy.

We Go Together, multifandom, by [personal profile] thingswithwings
As I said in my comment, I would never have thought that a kink bingo vid for watersports would become one of my favorite cheer-me-up vids. (Actually this rec list is part of my cheer-me-up list. I'm saving the less cheerful and/or fandom-specific recs for another time.)

Seven Nation Army, multifandom, by [personal profile] charmax
Humans fighting against evil robots. But they are shiny robots!

Paul McCartney, Will&Grace, by [livejournal.com profile] jarrow
This was an actual show? On TV? Hee. Lots of people doing silly things to cheerful music.

Get the Party Started, Leverage/White Collar, by [personal profile] rhoboat
People having fun doing illegal things to cheerful music.

Snakes on a Plane, Harry Potter, by [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny
GO, HARRY!

Vogue, 300, by [personal profile] luminosity
Great editing to the music (the colors and occasional slow-downs are very effective), a wonderful sense of movement, and many pretty men with not much clothing on. (A lot of violence, not surprising considering the fandom.)

Can Delight, multifandom, by jescaflowne
Dance! Cheerleaders and fighters and sparkles. It is very hard to sit still or not to smile while watching this vid.

Help, I can't stop adding vids! But it's finally quiet now, so maybe I can get some sleep.

ETA: Okay, one more: I Swear, Smallville, by [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny.
Pure crack. Lots of it.
