schneefink: (Kaylee with umbrella shiny)

I'll just assume you know the feeling of having found a bright shiny new thing that you want to tell everyone about but somehow it's really hard to find the words, and also writing why you like it also takes away time from consuming more of it. I just finished watching the "Akatsuki no Yona" anime (+OVAs) and I'm taking a brief break for some barely organized notes before I go and read all the manga chapters. (Also I should eat dinner, that would probably be good.)

Where to start? It has so many of my favorite tropes, especially when it comes to loyalty&betrayal. (A premise is not really a spoiler, right?) The dynamic between Yona, Hak, and Soo-won is fantastic. Yona herself is pretty great, and so is the whole team she assembles. And it looks like things will only get more and more political, yay.

I want all the canon-divergent fics, btw. If Yona hadn't caught Soo-won killing her father, did Soo-won plan to marry her? What would have happened if King Il had died before Soo-won planned to kill him? There's so much backstory about Soo-won's actions that I'm looking forward to finding out. How old was Soo-won when his dad died? What about his mom? And what does he think he has to do?
I already disliked King Il before we found out that he was actually a bad king, because Yona is 16, there's no excuse for her growing up so sheltered. And why, was her father just so naïve?

I like the dragons :) Kija is earnest and kind of cute, Shin-Ah is a woobie scared of his own power who finally has some friends, and Jae-ha is secretly kind and his original desire to run away from destiny is very understandable. Not much of Zeno so far, but I watched the OVAs and wow, tragic backstory. Involuntary immortality sucks.
Yun is maybe my favorite though. First I thought he was the Sokka of the group, the non-powered one, except he doesn't care much how to fight and instead is the cook and medic and navigator and a dozen other jobs. He volunteers himself to Lord Kumji to save Yona, he's really brave. And both he and Yona think of themselves as weak and the other as amazing, yay mutual admiration.

Yona herself is damn impressive and I like her a lot. Soo-won is interesting, and I'm not sure how I feel about Hak at the moment. I liked him a lot at first, but he has these infrequent moments of being a creep. So you're attracted to her, so what, she's 16, had a traumatic experience, is under your care, in mortal danger, and never showed any sign that she was interested in you, back the fuck off. Licking honey from her hand, wtf. Yona seems to mostly ignore it, fortunately; I don't think she can think clearly about setting boundaries with him right now because he's so important to her. I don't ship them (actually, if I ship Yona with anyone right now it's probably Yun, in a few years.)

I also liked Captain Gi-gan, though telling her crew not to kill the enemy to the point where it endangers her own crew seems, uh, risky at best. Ah well, it worked out.

I'm glad Zeno raised the question of what Yona plans to do now! Did she really think she could collect all four dragon-warriors to protect Hak and herself and then just live a quiet life, hah. She basically has enough power to take on a small army now. I'm so curious what will happen next! Will they just travel around or have specific goals in mind? Probably depends on what Soo-won does next, too…
