Doctor Who season 8
I was underwhelmed by season 7, so it kind of caught me by surprise how much I loved season 8.
Clara! Suddenly I loved Clara! After season 7 it was strange that after a season I didn't feel like I knew her enough, but I really loved her in season 8. I'm still not convinced that she's a great teacher, btw, but she's a lot of fun as a character. A control freak, Missy said, that's why she made sure she stayed together with the Doctor. "Do as you're told!" She shouted at the Doctor for some of the arrogant shit he keeps doing, and later tried to blackmail him into saving Danny by destroying the TARDIS keys. Wow.
I really like this Doctor! "I'm exactly what you deserve." Some great lines. No, he's not a good man, just an idiot in a box with a screwdriver. That was kind of exorcising the 11th, I thought, who started out with thwarting an alien invasion simply by invoking his name.
Missy! I was spoiled for Missy being the Master :( Stupid Tumblr. But I was surprised how much I liked her. Bananas, just like the old Master. She just wants her friend back. Gender is weird with Time Lords/Ladies that can change sex. The Doctor changed pronouns, so I guess that's how it's done?
I was surprised by how little it bothered me that she kissed the Doctor (the Tumblr post I saw was annoyed that they did it now that she's a woman and not when the Master was male.) It didn't really seem sexual, that's probably why. Just a bit of trolling, and closeness.
They killed Danny :( Missy confirmed that she arranged it, iirc? I'm going to miss him. But at least it wasn't a terrible death. Threefold self-sacrifice, not bad.
I'm glad at least Kate Stewart survived, but I'm sorry about Osgood.
So Missy created the human afterlife! Interesting. And all of the dead souls had to voluntarily delete their personalities/emotions? And all of them did it? I can't quite believe that for many of them. Probably if they hesitated for too long Missy got impatient and made the AI do it anyway, but it might be a bit more bothersome so she preferred to let them do it themselves.
I felt like the theme of this season was "silly/surreal A plot, interesting character stuff." In the first few episodes they got the mixture a bit wrong, but then it got better. "Flatline", for example: the 2D monster stuff was average at best, but Clara having to be the Doctor was great.
I'm not sure if I just noticed it more, but the cinematography kind of felt more... circular? More sweeps. Mostly it worked. By now I really love the current intro.
I'm looking forward to season 9! And I might look for fic for this season, as soon as I'm done with Yuletide. (Less than two days, but only tedious editing to do, should be fine.) Recs welcome :)
