Steerswoman fic: Dark Blue Skies
For the first time this winter, we had snow in Vienna today! According to the radio it started around 6am and when I got up (around 11) there was a thin layer of white outside and it was still snowing lightly for a short time. Finally :)
For Yuletide this year I wrote Steerswoman fic: Dark Blue Skies
Summary: In the third year of Willam's apprenticeship with Corvus, Abremio came to Wulfshaven.
Thanks to
isis and
sholio for the help. It's not perfect, but I'm proud of this one. 9.8k! My second-longest published fic, and the longest since 2011. It's in the smallest fandom I've written in so far and especially at first it was a bit disappointing that so few people read it, but I got some lovely comments which made up for it :)
I really enjoyed writing fic for these books. Willam's apprenticeship with Corvus was one of my recip's prompts, I'd already been interested in that anyway so I was excited. When I had the idea to add Abremio, and later the weather station, the whole thing started to come together.
Writing for the series made me love the books even more, and I was very happy that I also got fic for it, great coincidence. (For the first time in probably ever I correctly guessed who wrote my exchange story ^^)
The worldbuilding was a bit of a challenge. Working backwards from what's presented in the books was not always easy, especially because we don't know the exact level of technology there, that made some things easier and some harder. We don't know much about wizards! One of my first notes was "what the heck do wizards even do." One of the reasons why I set the fic in the first half of Willam's apprenticeship was so I could avoid getting too far into "wizard stuff" because Corvus didn't teach it to Willam yet. (My current best theory what the Red vs. Blue thing is about is population control, but that's a bit dark.)
I did my best writing Willam, and I enjoyed it. He's learning a new culture and worldview and he's pretty much alone, it's not easy. In Language of Power we see that the wizards' view of technology is still colored by magic in some ways, I tried to include that a bit.
I thought Willam having a crush on Corvus as a teenager is very likely, and I left it to the reader's imagination if it ever goes anywhere. (My take on it is that they eventually both suspect the attraction is mutual but never act on it, but I could be persuaded otherwise.)
