I was hesitant to for similar reasons, but I got used to the style of humour in the show fairly quickly after the characters grew on me. (It also gets funnier/more touching/more awesome over time - the first round of episodes are the weakest.)

That being said, I totally understand should you try it out and it would not be your thing!

(one word of advice: if you do start it, begin with episode 3, which is where the story proper starts, covering the same ground as the first manga chapter. Episode 1-2 are a standalone anime-only OAV split in two parts, which is best watched later on, after you've already found out who everyone is and have a better feel for the show's comedy style.)
