Yuletide Letter
Hi! Thank you very much for writing a story for me!
Some things I like:
* I love friendship/team fic. Characters who grow to like each other, trust each other, and eventually would do many things for each other, yes please. Especially when in the beginning they're in slightly different positions/places/etc. and their friendship is rather unexpected.
* Related to that, navigating relationships. Could be platonic or romantic partners: how do they deal with daily life, how do they solve conflicts, how do they support and comfort each other at the end of the day?
* Worldbuilding! How do things work? Both on a large scale and the mundane details. I love to learn about a world's politics, economics, cultural details, even administration and bureaucracy.
* Plot is great. Stories where they stay at home and play boardgames are also great. 5-things/times-fic is fun. I like stories that span an hour and stories that span years.
Things I don't like for Yuletide:
* Stories with an unhappy ending. Some unhappy elements are fine if the general outlook is optimistic, but nothing extremely dark, please (torture, rape, abuse…)
* Stories focused on explicit sex
* Complete AUs, i.e. coffeeshop AU etc. I love the canon worlds of all these fandoms so I'd prefer to read fic taking place there. Canon-divergent AUs are fine, or canon-with-small-details-changed.
Have fun! The prompts below are just guidelines, I hope they help you think of ideas.
1) The Young Protectors (webcomic)
Characters:Amanda Charleyboy (Commander), Spooky Jones, Kyle (Red Hot), Mitch (Flyboy)
If you don't know what it is:
The Young Protectors is an ongoing webcomic by Alex Wolfsoon. It has:
- teenage superheroes
- a gay protagonist
- great characters
- friendship and team feelings
- very intriguing worldbuilding (with both superheroes and demons and aliens)
- good plot
- beautiful art
- and great things I can't talk about yet because spoilers.
I was skeptical while reading the first two chapters, but around chapter two and a half it becomes awesome, and I'm eagerly awaiting each update. (YMMV, others love the beginning more.) I especially love [Spoiler:the way it deals with Kyle's sexuality: it's very important to him, he's afraid of coming out of the closet, but it doesn't define him. Also when Spooky talked to Kyle about guilt, that was great.]
It's not too long yet, I estimate it can be easily read in less than a day.
Don't read if the following things squick you: [Spoiler:a relationship with a big age difference, partner betrayal (of the "sell their soul to a demon" variety, not infidelity), mentioned (possibly sexual) abuse of a 13-year-old by demons]
My "young protectors" tag
Prompt:
Amanda and Spooky are my favorite characters. I'd love to read anything between when they met and now: how did they become friends? Why and how did they form the team? I find them a fascinating pair: They met when she was a lot older and she helped him out, I imagine he looked up to her a lot. He's part of her team years later despite the fact that he got much more prestigious offers from elsewhere, which probably helps enormously in lending their team credibility. They seem to be very good friends, and he's perfectly happy letting her take the lead. I would love anything that explores their relationship. But they're also great on their own, if you want to focus on just one of them.
I also like the rest of the team:
Mitch is – sorry Mitch – cute. He's also the youngest member of the team, presumably quite powerful, and longs to be acknowledged and included. I'd love to read more about where he comes from, why he's with this team in particular, and about his relationships/friendships with the other team members.
Almost the same goes for Kyle: he tries very hard, he has very good friends on the team, but he's also afraid that they'd reject him if they knew him. He could definitely use some hugs. I don't want Kyle/Annihilator.
I also like Paul and Tsunami, but I'm less interested in fic centered around them.
I'd love friendship, team, backstory, and/or worldbuilding. Adventures are also good. In general I'd prefer gen, but romance is fine too, just please no explicit sex.
Many of my prompts require heavy speculation and will likely be Jossed, I don't care. Futurefic could also be very interesting.
I'm not really interested in the Annihilator or the Platinum Princess beyond as background villains. (Hell, on the other hand, could be an interesting place to explore if you want to.)
2) Galaxy Quest (1999)
Characters: Laliari, Fred Kwan, Gwen DeMarco
If you don't know what it is: "Galaxy Quest" is a hilarious Star Trek/SciFi parody movie. You probably won't get some jokes if you're not at least passingly familiar with Star Trek and (Star Trek) fandom, but for me fannish osmosis was enough.
I didn't fall in love with any of the characters – too many instances of shouting "oh c'mon" at my screen – but I love the idea of it. Who hasn't dreamed of finding out that their fictional universes are actually real?
Prompt:
I'm mostly interested in what happens after the movie is over, when they get back to Earth after everything they've seen and start filming a new series.
How does Laliari adjust to the change in her worldview when she finds out that they were indeed actors? What does she think about suddenly being a character in a show that her own people are watching?
How is her relationship with Fred working out? What are some of the cultural differences and how do they deal with them? Laliari and Fred dating would be lovely to see.
Does Fred actually become interested in science and engineering?
Gwen is resuming her old character in the series, but that doesn't mean that she has to play it the same way. I'd love to see Gwen expanding her character's role in the new series. How do her adventures in space change her approach to her role and her relationship with the writers/producers of the show?
She's also in a new relationship with Jason, but I'd prefer for that not to be the focus.
Gwen&Laliari friendship fic would also be fantastic. Maybe Gwen helps her figure out Earth? Maybe Gwen gives Laliari (maybe also Fred) dating advice? (While wondering why they're asking her because it's not like she and Jason are the perfect model of success. But they're working on it.)
3) Vorkosigan Saga – Lois McMaster Bujold
Characters: Gregor Vorbarra, Aral Vorkosigan
If you don't know what it is: The "Vorkosigan Saga" (unofficial name afaik) is a series of novels by Lois McMaster Bujold, that I despite repeated recommendations only read recently and then immediately regretted the decision. Not reading them earlier, that is.
I wrote a reaction post after reading most of the books in a very short period of time that lists some of the things I love about the series:
Worldbuilding incl. spaceships, plot incl. consequences, (space) politics, character incl. development, the duty and loyalty themes…
My Vorkosigan tag (note to self, post that second fic rec post sometime)
Prompt: I liked Gregor a lot in "The Warrior's Apprentice" and fell in love with him in "The Vor Game." He inherited an incredibly difficult situation, for him and everyone around him. It wasn't easy, and he made mistakes, but it turned out so well! Well done, Gregor. And Aral, and Cordelia, and Simon, who are also great characters and without whom none of it would have worked.
I'm extremely curious about Gregor the teenager: growing up knowing he will one day inherit an Empire. He knows it's extremely risky to trust someone and that you never know if you will survive the next day. Making friends isn't easy. He must have found out that Aunt Cordelia's opinions and teachings would seem strange to most of Barrayar. Almost everyone around him probably has difficulty holding apart "Gregor the teenager" and "Gregor the future Emperor." He's afraid of not being good enough one day and disappointing everyone, especially Aral.
I would love to read about teenage/young adult Gregor's relationship with Aral. What did they think of each other, how often did they see each other, what led to Gregor doubting Aral when he came of age? Or show me their uneasy relationship after the events of "The Warrior's Apprentice" and how they try to repair things between them. Or Gregor and Aral around the events of "The Vor Game."
The time until "The Vor Game" plus a few years is the one I'm most interested in, but I'd be happy about anything exploring Gregor and Aral's relationship.
I also love Cordelia and would be happy to see her. I really like her and Aral's established relationship. Simon could be there, or Miles, Ivan, Elena…
