Thoughts about the kinds of fiction I like creating

Something I've been poking at lately is the fact I genuinely don't seem to enjoy writing original prose fiction, even though I enjoy creating fanfic, original visual novels, visual novel adaptations, and original art (and fanart). I definitely don't think it's lacking as an artform! It just doesn't fit my brain so well to make it. And I guess to some extent I also am less drawn to it as a consumer of fiction? That's harder to untangle and not so much the point of this post but I'm going to ponder it later.

Babylon 5 fanfic: The Drowning Deep

I wrote this for [community profile] fan_flashworks "Underwater" challenge back in early May and finally got around to editing it (the first version was pretty rough; this has been cleaned up a lot, tweaked for word choice and clarity).

One thing rolling around in the back of my head when I wrote this is something I've noticed reading fic for this show - there's not really a lot of typical tropey h/c for these characters. It's understandable, because canon is so tightly plotted, and so much of the fic is just fixing and/or dealing with their various canon disasters and tragedies. But sometimes you just want to put someone into a classic h/c situation and make them deal with it, you know?

The Drowning Deep (5500 words, gen)
Takes place between 5x09 and 5x10. An attempt on Londo's life in the palace gardens.
Also posted on AO3.

Tian Guan Ci Fu [Heaven Official's Blessing], V. 1 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, translators Suika & Pengie

Funnily enough, the thing that gets me to actually read a MXTX novel is to assess getting it as a birthday present for someone who would give me no info on their current reading tastes and said they were willing to get anything, so based on some of their previous tastes, I considered a MXTX book and figured TGCF would be the most likely book of interest. So out from the library I got the first volume out to read it and assess it.

And it's funny and it's good, so I keep reading to see if the volume ends on a cliffhanger or not, and then I get to the Banyue arc. And I had been told the Banyue arc was racist but I was so not prepared for how racist it is. Right off the bat, it's "hello, nice to meet you, I'm a racist caricature" and then it *keeps getting worse*. So I plan to get the other volumes out from the library and read them myself, because this is enjoyable, but I'm unsure of the birthday present situation. I may go with something else.

Saturdays in May

For reasons that I'll explain in a month or two, I went to a local used bookstore (Pulpfiction on Main is my saviour) to see if they had copies of the earlier Anita Blake books. Subway construction on Broadway was so bad that it took longer to get there on the bus than it took me to walk home; c'est la vie.

Anyway, my route home took me past my old apartment. I haven't been that way much since I moved out in 2009. The old neighbourhood was pretty much the same - taller trees, although there are a number of rezoning proposal signs up; we'll see what goes through the city planning office and what can actually get built, with the cost of construction sky-high. I wondered if I would feel any nostalgia when I walked past the old place, but there was none. It was a crappy place and I was in a not-so-great mental space when I lived there. Pretty happy I left when I did.

K that's enough navel gazing. I have old books to look at :)

A Fantastic Woman | Una mujer fantástica (2017)

In today's episode, Jasmine, Irene and Alice discuss the 2017 Academy Award-winning Chilean film Una mujer fantástica (A Fantastic Woman). This film's grounded and sometimes surprisingly hopeful depiction of a trans woman's grief provided such a realistic depiction of legal barriers facing trans people in Chile that it contributed to positive changes in legislation around gender transition. Join us to talk about a three-dimensional trans protagonist, how queer suffering is not inevitable, and what made us genuinely love this sad queer movie.

I bought some string cheese a couple weeks ago on sale and today I breaded and fried it into mozzarella sticks. So good to eat! So messy to clean up after!

I slept poorly again last night - I had to shut the window while it was raining, and I don't know if it's the barometric pressure that's been giving me these headaches, but I don't like it. At least this cool rainy weather meant I made it all the way through May without turning on the AC. It looks like I will probably start needed it next week though. Last year, I signed up for the thing where they charge you the same amount each month to smooth out the ups and downs, which I've grown to prefer to the $110 swings in my electric bill come summer.

In other news, I learned that there really is a cocoa shortage and I'm not imagining it. So I'm glad I stocked up from King Arthur. Unfortunately, the bag had a small tear in it, so everything in the box it shipped with was covered in a fine dusting of cocoa powder. 🤨 But I washed it all and transferred the cocoa into a ziplock so it's all nice and tidy now.

Activate external deadline!

R. F. Kuang has a book called "Katabasis" that comes out on August 26, 2025. /insert here "good for her" gif

I have a duology of MCU fics I've been calling "katabasis" that I've been working on since I saw Endgame. It's about Natasha and Gamora making their ways out of the afterlife -- except, despite interacting, they're going through different afterlives: Natasha's is Dante's Hell, Gamora's Irkalla, the Mesopotamian underworld. Yes, I'm lots of fun at parties.

Anyway, point is, I want to finish and post those fics before Kuang's book comes out? Deadlines tend to help me do things. Technically the Natasha fic is finished but not the Gamora one and besides I need to make sure their dialogues make sense in both contexts.

Have a handful of lines I'm proud of, idk, I need validation.

1. It took a village to raise a child soldier.

2. Sirens, sirens everywhere and not a song to sing.

3. "I recognise the afterlife has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I've elected to ignore it."

5. Dis was a necropolis in the purest sense; a city of the dead, skyscrapers of graves and tombstones reaching upwards like the drowned's grasping hands.

6. There on the rock sat Tony Stark. Not Iron Man, not the man who'd escape from a cave to dive into a wormhole with a nuke, but Anthony Edward Stark, self-made billionaire, Forbes' golden child, arms dealer, merchant-king of war and woe, Mammon of the Modern Age.

7. "I know I told you to die in a ditch, but I didn't mean it," continued Rocket's voice.

8. "It seems a terrible thing, to believe in sin," Gamora said.

9. But a poppy pod is a thing of death. It weeps sleep and bleeds a painless end.

Flicking embers into daffodils

A nice thing to link to: Jeannelle M. Ferreira's "The House of Women" (2025), named after the site on Akrotiri because it is a story from when the mountain was Minoan and the walls of the city where libations were offered 𐀤𐀨𐀯𐀊 𐂕𐄽𐄇 were painted with dolphins and saffron gatherers. I have a great affection for this story with its ground pigments and grilled eel and lovers describable as sapphic a thousand years before the tenth Muse. Even in cataclysms, it is worth holding on.

Author’s summary: The thing is, he hadn’t really meant to say it. Not then. Not there. He hadn’t really ever even thought about it before, not in such specific terms. So, it’s as much of a shock to him as it is to anyone else.

or, Rodney's trying so hard and John just doesn't get it.

Why This Must Be Read: This is such a beautiful story—everyone who’s ever enjoyed a true love read should go for it! It shows us Rodney in a light far removed from his well-known and accepted behavior, revealing his most endearing sides: quiet, loving, cautious, thoughtful, and deeply romantic. You’ll suffer with him as he bears the pain of an oblivious John, who just can’t see the woods for the trees. But you’ll also witness the wonders that true love is capable of—and the happiness, and ultimately, the fulfillment it brings.

The way it’s written—in a kind of reverse 5+1 structure—feels like a countdown, ignition, and finally, lift-off for the rocket of love that is McShep

May fanworks round-up post!

This is the fanworks round-up post for May! Please link in the comments to any Guardian (or related fandoms) fanworks you created or enjoyed last month.
  • all kinds of fanworks are welcome – fic, art, vids, picspams, etc. - including those made for exchanges and events
  • new chapters of WIPs count
  • meta or discussion posts, too
  • whether or not you've already linked these in a post of their own, we still want them here!

If you're linking to fanworks you didn't create yourself, please clearly mark these "REC", so there's no confusion about authorship/creatorship.

(And please still do link your fanworks, meta, etc. separately, in their own post, at any time!)

So ... what Guardian and related fandoms works did you create or enjoy in May?
