The character I least understand: This is difficult, because the show does such a great job showing different characters' motivations. Eunuch Gao, maybe? I can never quite figure out what he does on purpose.

Interactions I enjoyed the most: Jingyan and Mei Changsu, so many feelings every time.
Also Consort Jing and the Emperor. She's so clever :)
And Mei Changsu and Lin Chen, because Lin Chen is such a delightful troll.
I also really liked Jingyan interacting with his ministers. And Mei Changsu and Meng Zhi. And Mei Changsu with his whole household. So many.

The character who scares me the most: If I got on his bad side, Mei Changsu. In general, Xia Jiang.

The character who is most like me: Xia Dong? Probably wishful thinking.

Hottest looks character: Tie between Jingyan and Nihuang *_*

One thing I dislike about my fave character: Jingyan could stand to be a bit less impulsive and think a bit more about consequences for the larger picture.

One thing I like about my hated character: At least Xia Jiang and the Emperor care for their families, if very badly.

A quote or scene that haunts me: Liyang stepping forward and confronting the Emperor. And Mei Changsu sinking to his knees when Jingyan cuts the bell cord, and later calling after Jingyan in the snow.

A death that left me indifferent: Xie Yu, & Prince Yu.

A character I wish died but didn't: Hm, actually I can't think of characters I wanted to die but didn't, right now... It's a revenge story, it's all about the bad guys getting their richly deserved ending. I wonder what happened to Qin Banruo, but she almost certainly didn't get off lightly.

My ship that never sailed: Jingyan/Lin Shu, because Lin Shu died :'(

Awww, I loved hearing your thoughts on all of this! And yes, Jingyan should definitely stop being impulsive! I keep telling him so every episode, but does he listen... XD

Gao is fascinating. I don't know what he's thinking, either, but he seems fond of Jing-fei in some way? Or maybe he sees what's best for the country? Huh. Good question.

His impulsiveness is only really a problem when he fails to consider a larger picture, as he also frequently does. To be fair it's probably a difficult thought to get used to, but if he dies or gets banished the kingdom is pretty much screwed in the near future and he doesn't seem nearly conscious enough of that.

Gao seemed at least slightly sympathetic toward Jingyan from the beginning, but also very, very cautious, unsurprisingly considering he's survived at the side of a paranoid temperamental Emperor for many years. And he does seem fond of Consort Jing.
...I don't remember, but when the Emperor walked through the garden "coincidentally" near her palace, was he going anywhere in particular? Could Gao have had a hand in his route? Probably overthinking this.
I'll have to pay more attention to him when rewatching.

Oh no - that's not overthinking it at all! From what I recall Gao totally orchestrated that "random" walk near her palace, knowing that the healing herb scent would entice and soothe the Emperor. Now - if he did it because he knew Jing-fei could get the Emperor in a better mood (which would be short-term good for Gao), or as a hidden favor to Jing-fei... who can say? Or was it a little bit of both?

That was after Jingyan had told his mom that he was entering the fight for the throne, yes? I don't think his mother and Gao have any official contact, but it's possible she sent notice, or a hint, through one of the eunuchs (iirc she does seem friendly with one or two) that she'd appreciate a chance to see the Emperor again and if Gao could perhaps do something.
New headcanon: Gao really admired Consort Chen.
