We'll be Frodo

This weekend was my last D&D session for at least a month, both because I'll be very busy and because I find it hard to concentrate when playing online (it's fine for oneshots, but I dislike it for the main campaign), and with the numbers going up meeting up in person is unwise. (I'm considering taking a bike to work, even though I'm not the biggest fan of biking.)

It was a good place for a break though. We finally met van Buren! The guy we were originally tasked to stop because he was rumored to try and take over the world, which turned out to be bullshit. He told us to call him Quintus.

Things we know: about two thousand years ago the pantheon and entire world of Hiberia was conquered by an evil god (zombie god moon, ZGM). Hiberia's god of magic offered to sacrifice himself for a magic ritual enabling the population to escape to a different world, on the condition that they'd seek a solution how to defeat the ZGM and then return. However, once on this new world most immigrants decided to simply stay, disregarding the contract and the negative impact their magic had on the new world's magic- and ecosystem.

Quintus van Buren is one of a couple of very powerful people making plans to take back Hiberia. He's working together with the god of magic and their plan is for the god of magic to one day just cut off magic in this world, to force everyone who wants to keep magic to fight the ZGM for Hiberia. There's no way for us to stop the god of magic from doing that, so all we can do is alleviate (like ask him for more time to prepare, try to prevent mass panic as much as possible etc.) and deal with the consequences.

Quintus also has plans for us: basically, he wants us to be Frodo. He said that of all adventuring parties (of at least close to the necessary power) we have shown both a knack for survival, and a useful lack of close ties to any of the major players opposing the re-taking of Hiberia. He wants to send us to Hiberia, get in contact with an ally of his over there, get in contact with the weaponsmiths there to create a weapon to kill the ZGM, and then during the big attack, when the ZGM is distracted, he wants us to kill it.

Sensibly, upon learning that there's no fixed deadline, we immediately resolved to get some more training in beforehand (and more money.) Our archivist/rune-caster/cleric is trying to convince her evil god not to give in to any bribery the ZGM might try (she thinks he promised not to in exchange for her killing another god for him to give him more power, but he is a god of deception so who knows), and my character had a nice scene with her little brother who is a high-ranking member of a ~paladin order and who she hasn't seen in years. (It was awkward. Her poor brother.)

Then we went on a monster-killing quest and killed a giant centipede (it was tricky because its spell-resistance was really high but we managed, and MC was definitely the MVP), and got a big reward for that which is also nice.

I'm going to miss playing for the next month. I hope they'll wait with the visit to the flying island until I'm back, fingers crossed.
