Does Wonder Woman ever ride a dragon in canon? Just wondering.
Yesterday I went with friends to watch "How to train your dragon 2" :)
I enjoyed it a lot! It was funny, it was cute - Hiccup and Toothless, and Toothless and Cloudjumper, and so many other things. Hiccup and Astrid make a great pair, it's great to see how they grew up. And Hiccup has a light sabre!
Hiccup's mom! That was a surprise. And she can dance on dragons, wow. Her reunion with Stoick was very sweet. I honestly thought they'd both return and get to have their happy ending, I'm naive like that. But I'm pleasantly surprised that they fridged him, not her.
The Alpha's telepathy/mind control was an interesting aspect, it could also explain some of the plot of the first movie (not only fear, also force.) Now I understand why I saw Toothless + Bucky fanart on Tumblr.
I didn't like the ending as much as in the first one. In the first movie they defeat the big bad through teamwork - and also because Toothless is a Night Fury, but mostly teamwork. In the second movie it's pretty much only because Toothless is a BAMF. Hiccup helps him break free, but everything else is Toothless being a Night Fury, and Valka and the others don't really play a role. That's a shame, I would have loved to see more of them in action.
Hiccup becomes chief because his father is dead: it's understandable, but the ending ignores a lot of what they set up in the first half where Hiccup said that that's not him, and his definition of "a chief protects their own" is very different from his father's (or mother's.) That's what fic is for, or a third movie... I think Astrid would end up doing most of the chief's work very soon.
The scenery and animation was gorgeous, like in the first movie.
Now I can finally look for gif sets/fanart on Tumblr! And if you have any fic recs, please share :)
I also finished "Superman: Red Son."
I loved the first third, the other two less. Many interesting ideas in there (plus funny stuff, like Soviet!Batman's outfit.) They started out exploring how Superman would react to growing up in the Soviet Union, which is fascinating - but then they dilute and destroy that by having him be manipulated by Brainiac basically ever since he took power. At least that explains how Superman could be so stupid and honestly consider a world in which the population is mind-controlled to be a utopia, and yet be smart enough that a single sentence by Luthor can snap him out of it.
One funny aspect for me was the way the comic treated economics: as something that Superman on his own could fix for an entire country, and Luthor as well, in a matter of months. Economics doesn't work like that, no matter how smart you are the President can't create hundreds of thousands of jobs with a snap of his fingers, and superpowers don't help either.
I liked what we saw of Themyscira and for I don't know the how many-eth time I thought to myself I should try and read some Wonder Woman comics.
