Babylon 5: 3x21 - 4x03
There was hockey practice between watching TV last night and now: still no goal for me, but a few good things, and it was fun. I can see the progress I made, that's nice. But I had so much to say about Bab5 yesterday evening and now it feels like there's already less...
Quick other things: I have a great plotbunny for a space adventure hockey AU that I look forward to developing. And for some reason I dreamed Evander Kane was traded to Austria and I went with friends to greet him at the airport. Idek.
More Bab5: some things I wasn't completely happy with, some really fascinating developments, and sooo many questions.
Shadow Dancing: A big attack! (I wonder why they didn't contact the First Ones Susan and Marcus found once?) I'm still not impressed by their war preparations: Sheridan never saw the command centre of the White Star before the battle, that seems a bit risky, doesn't it? And he only starts thinking about what comes next when Garibaldi asks him? A victory, of a sort, but many are dead. The other planets definitely had a right to be concerned.
Franklin, finally! Good to have him back.
And then: Anna Sheridan O.O AV guessed it a few moments before I did, but I recognized the snowglobe scene from Delenn's flashback.
Z'ha'dum: Wow, I really dislike Anna Sheridan. Openly antagonistic towards Delenn in a very unkind way, and I also don't like her voice. I'm not sure why their first concern seemed to be if she's physically the same, much more often they've encountered people who weren't the same mentally, like Talia.
I really disliked how Sheridan treated Delenn. Okay, he goes nuts where his wife is concerned, we knew that since 2x16 "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum", but still. She told him everything to the best of her knowledge! (That reminds me, I don't think we know how Khosh got those images he showed back then? Vorlon magic?) At least then he switches to being upset that she maybe wouldn't have told him that Anna could still be alive if/because she was afraid he would go off on his own, which could have endangered billions of lives, but that's a hypothetical situation. At least he sends her another message later.
Londo is warned of the attack: does he at least try to warn Babylon 5 C&C? We don't see it, I don't think we even get confirmation if he left the station or not, but I want to believe he did because otherwise that's a level of not caring that would shock me even for Londo, and especially for Vir.
We talked about how good Londo is at Centauri politics: sometimes he seems to play the game very well, like with Refa and here he knew exactly what his promotion means, but other times he doesn't at all and is then blindsided, like when he thought Refa killed Adira or when his friend made Londo kill him. He just doesn't seem to pay enough attention, because he doesn't want to, even when he really really should.
At least Anna is fairly upfront about her loyalties... And of course Sheridan can't resist walking into the trap. Though his justification, that he wants to try and change the future, is shaky. I guess he assumes that he didn't go to Z'ha'dum in that timeline he saw because Khosh told him he'd die if he went there, so obviously he didn't go... but at least since watching the first season of Buffy I distinguish between "you will die" and "you will die permanently and not ever be resurrected." I choose to believe that he realized it's a trap before that discussion with her, probably even read Franklin's report (stupid to leave it lying around though), because everything else makes him look stupid. "You should listen to both sides" isn't quite as valid when one side has killed billions.
Huh, this was the first time I realized - well, with AV's help - that "Who are you" is the Vorlon equivalent of "What do you want." It was probably pretty obvious.
So the Shadows are social darwinists, pretty much: make the kids fight so the strongest one survives. Only in that case it makes no sense that they lend their assistance to some of them: what if, on their own, the Narn would have been stronger than the Centauri? The Shadows manipulate the playing field, which runs counter to what they claim is their goal. They also seemed to want to seize territory - quite a lot of it, in fact - which also isn't explained by what they claim they want to do. Or is it more "we'll conquer and oppress the whole galaxy and whoever survives us has earned it"?
The "order/chaos" dichotomy is familiar from somewhere, I've heard it before, also in a context where balance is necessary. (The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K.Jemisin, I think.)
Justin's line about the telepaths is very interesting. He claims that the Vorlons created them as cannon fodder for the upcoming war against the Shadows a hundred years ago. (How did the Vorlons know when the next war would come?) But we know that there were telepaths before, we know for example there were telepaths on Narn during the last Shadow War, and that telepathy is a genetic trait. It can't have been a complete lie, though, or Sheridan would have called him on it. So it's likely that telepaths started appearing on Earth a hundred years ago, and maybe on other planets too. Do the Vorlons only give telepathy to races that they think will be involved in the Shadow Wars? At first I thought maybe only space-faring races, but I don't think the Narn were space-faring during the last Shadow War.
As an aside, what's also a bit strange to me is how everyone treats the last Shadow War as if it was ages ago, only a thing of legends. But it was "just" a thousand years! We have pretty good records of what happened on Earth a thousand years ago, and other races had much more advanced technology. The last Shadow War could have been so devastating that all such records were lost except the Minbari's, but they said they won the war, so I assumed a couple more races survived.
When Justin said that the other old races except the Vorlons and Shadows left, my first thought was "they all Ascended!" Because otherwise, left where to? And we've seen something like it before, with Ironheart. Oh well.
I wonder how long Anna was in a ship? Probably for a considerable amount of time, until they figured out how big of a threat Sheridan was. Did the Shadows seriously think they could just do to Sheridan what they did to Anna and nobody would notice?
It was a suicide mission! I should have seen this coming. I kind of did, just not this particular way, for some reason. The White Star :(
And Garibaldi disappears... at this point I wasn't sure if that was part of his and Sheridan's secret plan.
I liked it, but I thought this season finale wasn't quite as good as the other two so far. It was a bit more predictable and the cliffhanger isn't quite as bad.
(I just wrote about a thousand words about one episode. This may take even longer than I thought.)
The Hour of the Wolf: Poor Susan. With Sheridan and Garibaldi gone, Delenn grieving, and Franklin busy, she doesn't have much of a support network left. There's Marcus, at least, but they're not quite at that stage yet.
Wouldn't it be great if Talia was still there?! Talia could also support Lyta. Dammit I still miss her.
Poor Lyta! The Vorlon returning from her body looks so creepy. I like her black eyes better, even though they remind me of demons. (I think that's from Supernatural? I didn't even watch that show.) But she volunteers to go look for Sheridan, and they're almost caught by... what? I wish I could rewatch it, but I don't have the episode right now. I don't think we've seen it before, some kind of Shadow trap probably.
Wow, Cartagia is an asshole. That's what I meant, Londo should have been a bit more informed about who he put on the throne! At least he realizes it now - possibly too late for Centauri Prime... Even Morden is still alive, pity, though he looks not well. (Not sure what it reminded me of most... with the hood, for a brief moment, of Madame Vastra. Sorry Madame.) And Londo calls Vir for help and calls him the closest thing he has to a friend, aww.
Hi Sheridan! What a surprise, not dead.
Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?: G'Kar goes looking for Garibaldi! Aww. I wish he kept the hat *g* And Marcus follows him to help, very nice. I don't think we've seen them interact much, if at all. Not a surprise that G'Kar gets captured, poor guy.
So Lorien basically combines the Vorlon and Shadow aspects, "Who are you" and "What do you want" both. Interesting. The first one? How is he still sane? He probably experiences time differently. He says he's been trapped on Z'ha'dum for a long time, that he's the reason the Shadows keep coming back, so it's probably been at least several thousand years, likely many more. And this body might not be the original one - seems likely, in fact. It's so humanoid for something that should be so far apart.
Delenn blames herself for Sheridan going to Z'ha'dum - why?? She told him all she knew, she wasn't even in a position to withhold that choice from him. We already knew grief makes her irrational, but now she's in a different position... That we just saw a bit of the Centauri government just emphasizes that we have no idea if there even is a current Minbari government, and as the person who broke the Grey Council and as Ranger One Delenn currently has a lot of power. A recording by Sheridan snaps her out of planning suicide this time, let's hope it lasts and works again next time.
Delenn assembles some of the Rangers (btw apparently the ship type is called White Star, I thought it was only that one ship) and there are surprisingly many humans among them. When did the Rangers start recruiting humans? With how long the training takes, it was most likely even before Sinclair arrived on Minbar. I wonder how that started.
Of course Cartagia's gift to Londo turns out to be G'Kar. Ouch. And G'Kar asks after Garibaldi! Well, Londo, that's quite a situation you've got there. At least he's good in not outright getting himself killed. Asking G'Kar to help him kill Cartagia is a nice idea, but does he actually have a plan? I sort of doubt it. And G'Kar uses even this situation to negotiate... because he does have some leverage, he could make Cartagia kill him, instead he'll have to suffer even more pain and humiliation. So he gets Londo to promise to free Narn. Londo you BETTER not break that promise. Londo and G'Kar are still so great together, fantastic relationship. With a lot of murderous thoughts... (I still want an arranged/political marriage fic.)
Garibaldi! Poor Garibaldi, whatever happened to him. AV noticed that the guy coming into the room has a PsiCorps logo on his chest, I would have missed that.
The Summoning: Why are they looking for more first ones when they haven't even contacted the last ones they found yet? Oh well, desperate times. Susan started to learn Minbari! And it looks like Marcus didn't teach her? Did she ask someone else? (Now I want Lennier teaching Susan Minbari.) Delenn telling Marcus that anyone who laughs at Susan will answer to her personally <3
Ooh, Marcus, have you never read a romance novel? Saying that you have a special someone to that someone, who doesn't know you're talking about them, never leads to good things. Most likely outcome (in fic), they think you're taken and won't approach you. I think Marcus and Susan could be really sweet together.
Susan dreams of going home, to St. Petersburg and Paris, to visit her father's grave, and to travel. Aww. I hope she gets to have that one day; she doesn't really want a command position like Babylon 5, but maybe an exploration ship? That reminds me, we haven't heard anything from Earth in a while now. I think the latest was that bickering couple we saw for a few moments in "Shadow Dancing" who disagree about how much President Clark is to be believed.
Whooa that's a huge Vorlon ship. Shortly before I started watching the show I accidentally saw in a list of spaceships "Vorlon Planetkiller", which sounds ominous: even if you have a ship with the power to blow up a planet, you probably won't call it that unless it actually, y'know, blows up planets, and that's rarely a good thing. That made me initially a bit suspicious of the Vorlons, but then I forgot about it. I think we just found it. (Would the Vorlons have destroyed the White Star if they'd noticed it?)
Poor Lyta! (See, having Talia as friend and support would be good for her. Not that they'd always see eye to eye, but still.) Good for her for insisting and not just following orders when she thinks something is wrong, because Delenn asked her to.
Zack found Garibaldi! But his captors rather killed themselves than let their identity be known. Uh. But they at least saved Garibaldi? Very strange. It's understandable that Garibaldi doesn't want to talk about his experience, but hopefully at least Franklin gets him to take it easy for now. (And checks him for any kind of mind-altering procedures...) No wonder he feels even more uncertain and suspicious than usual. We don't know yet if Garibaldi was taken on purpose or if it was a coincidence that it was him and not any other Starfury. The latter would be quite a large coincidence, but they happen, and I'm not sure why someone would target Garibaldi in particular.
That wasn't the smartest way to address that protest, Delenn. At least you should have been on higher ground, not in the middle of the crowd, that's unsafe and makes it harder for people to see/hear you. Good thing Sheridan has such great timing. Very dramatic entrance.
Sheridan is back in a ship, and he brought Lorien?! Huh. So Lorien really could leave any time he wanted? Why would he then leave with Sheridan? He obviously doesn't want his identity to be common knowledge. Why is he here?
Even Vir wants to kill Cartagia. There are two characters that, when they are furious, you really know that something is beyond the pale: Vir and Lennier. Cartagia really is cartoon-levels of evil, wow.
G'Kar does something he believes strips him of his identity as a Narn, to save his home planet, poor G'Kar. (The torture scenes are brutal.) Londo says he understands, but how could he? The only thing I could think of is that for him, planning to assassinate the Emperor feels similar because he's going against all Centauri traditions, but still.
So the Vorlons actually blew up a planet. Not good. They want to destroy everything infected with Shadows, that means what? Every planet that harbors them? Not good for Centauri Prime, but at least it would be a limited amount of planets. Except if the Shadows flee to even more planets in an attempt to escape. They could try to fight, but after one of their biggest cities was just destroyed, and since the Vorlons have had almost no losses so far (that we know of), I doubt it. Well the Vorlons lost Kosh, who apparently was one of the nicer Vorlons. Pity.
I wonder how quickly the news will spread and how the other worlds will react... they've all been "prepared" by the Vorlons to see them as good, so it must be quite a shock.
I heard that season 4 is the one where episodes start to be more crammed because they were told they only had 4 seasons instead of 5 as planned. Season 4 of 5 would be a great place to reveal that the Vorlons aren't that benevolent, season 4 of 4 is a bit late. Oh well, not their fault, and I'll see how it goes. I didn't see the Vorlon fleet coming, though I did suspect that they would turn out to be not as holy as they first appear. That would have been too easy.
Only five episodes, but I wrote over 2.7k words and it took even longer than I thought. I wouldn't do that if it wasn't such an excellent show.
Quick other things: I have a great plotbunny for a space adventure hockey AU that I look forward to developing. And for some reason I dreamed Evander Kane was traded to Austria and I went with friends to greet him at the airport. Idek.

Bottom right-ish and by far not the biggest fish in the pond. =D

ETA: For some reason I can't even see the full-size version... at least there's no danger of spoilers.

The Vorlons seed telepaths in species whenever they get around to it, which for Humans was a century prior to the series. As for how the Vorlons knew Earth would be critical, consider that Sinclair=Valen, and he for darn sure knew when teeps appeared ...
They never specify, but I'm pretty sure there was no "grand alliance" against the Shadows last time. At least, nobody ever mentions one that I recall; all we hear about are Minbari fighting. Which doesn't mean it was just Minbari vs. Shadows, but remember how much both Vorlons and Shadows like proxy fighters. Think massive confusion and chaos, lots of wars great and small, most races having no idea they're participating in this great battle between the Vorlons and the Shadows. I mean, there are only a handful of people on Centauri Prime who think their attack on the Narn has anything to do with the Shadows, for example. And the Shadows have a vested interest in keeping, well, to the shadows. I bet there's lots of great historical data about that period of history (though, due to the fog of war, less than other periods), but only rumors and legends about the Shadows. Think about it this way: we have lots of records about the middle ages in Europe, but that doesn't stop us from having lots of legends and stories set in that era that are only loosely connected to facts.
Londo and G'Kar! One of the great favorites of fandom for a very good reason.
Yes, this is where they were told they would be shorted a season.
