NiF 2
They announced that there will be a second season of Nirvana in Fire! I'm almost more nervous than happy. The show is so good, I really don't want my enjoyment to be dampened if I don't like the sequel. It'll be set 50 years later, so at least the characters will be different, but we'll still (I assume) find out a lot about what happened to Jingyan and the others. Of course I know that there's no way that their future is free from hardship, as an Emperor Jingyan will definitely have to deal with more wars and court dramas, and of course his mom will eventually die etc. etc., but I want his life to get better! (not that that would be hard) and I want him to have at least a peaceful death. Same goes for Nihuang.
On the other hand the sequel will be written by the same person, so there is a chance it'll be as good. In which case the cliffhangers will be terrible.
It'll be a year until NiF 2 comes out – I already know that waiting for the translations and subtitles after each episode comes out will be hard, and it's about 50/50 if I'll manage to wait or spoil myself completely. Hopefully until then I can ignore most of what comes out about the sequel and enjoy my own headcanons.
Speaking of, I'm currently writing three (3!) NiF fics that I feel good about :) Very slowly, but still. Sometimes/when I'm blocked I forget how much fun writing can be. (I never forget the frustration, not even when things are going well.)
In completely different news, today I woke up to zero AO3 notifications. I currently subscribe to 146 stories, 147 series, and 193 authors (authors may overlap with stories/series), so that has never happened before. Not even a comment reply, and I try to leave comments frequently. I was honestly relieved to find out that the problem was on AO3's end, otherwise it would have been a very weird coincidence, and on Halloween of all days. (Problem appears to be solved now, missing emails should appear soon.)

Wow. I'm glad it was the system and not you, because - yeah, with that many subscriptions etc, that would've been weeeird.
Also: WHY A SEQUEL. :/
Like. I love the production company and obvs Hai Yan? BUT. I hate this trope. It always makes me sad! Don't remind me that time passes and everyone dies I KNOW. I need fiction to NOT THINK ABOUT THAT. (Yes Korra broke my heart.) Also, if there's a drama about it there's ~drama~ and I'm like after all that hard work and sacrifice Da Liang deserves at least a 100 years of peace?!
I'm. Not going to whine about it everywhere (well - I'll try) and I realize that these are very personal reasons and I'm glad Hai Yan & co have been so successful they get to tell more stories now.
But you know what I really want? A PREQUEL (I have SO MANY QUESTIONS and also SO MUCH LOVE for a lot of the characters we don't even see.)
Or a side-quel set at the same time in another kingdom or whatever. Even something set a century later! But this just. Hurts me personally and I will be very cautious of it because its very premise upsets me in an unhappy way.
Sorry rant over!

I totally get the desire for fiction not to focus on the near-inevitable messy and less-happy-than-they-deserve aftermath/ending. I'm sort of hoping that it'll be less tragic (optimism!), because two such tragedies in sixty years is a) obviously too much for any country, and b) such a bad ending for everything Jingyan and LS/MCS and the others suffered through. They wanted a better future for their country!, they should get that for at least one generation, they earned it. I don't think the odds are very good though, no TV without drama. Hopefully if it's very sad I'll be able to think of it as an AU.
I don't really want a prequel either though. I haven't had good experiences with prequels, most of the time I was unable to ignore the knowledge of "you die, and you die, and you die tragically, and you betray everyone else, and everything you hope for will end in flames until after many years there is at last a sliver of redemption." I'm sure there is a way to make prequels that are enough their own story that what comes after can be temporarily ignored, but I can't think of examples right now. I like seeing snippets of the past, but I think having fifty episodes to get attached to these people whose tragic fate I already know would be difficult. I like happy endings.
Rant away anytime :)
