2020 gets ever more surreal: SPN 15x18

If I had had to guess yesterday what would most amuse and distract me today, I would not have guessed Supernatural. I wasn't even in that fandom! (I mean I did read dozens of fics and watched some vids etc., but that barely counts, pretty sure that's just normal levels of fandom osmosis with a huge fandom like that.)

That Destiel scene - or, well, DD correctly pointed out that it's not canon Destiel, it's a confirmation that Cas has romantic feelings for Dean but not the other way around, but still - had the perfect timing. Even without the Putin probably-a-hoax that came out at the same time, which made for some very confusing tweets to wake up to. A day earlier would have been too stressful, a day later more relaxed, but yesterday night was the perfect time to just be really surreal. Fucking 2020, man. Cas confesses his love and immediately gets thrown into super-hell, if I understood correctly, is just the most SPN way of doing a gay love confession *facepalm*
And all the memes! Too lazy rn to pick out individual ones but there are quite a few collected in this ff_a thread. (I thought this comment about why Destiel/SPN specifically had this big reaction is probably fairly accurate.)

When I heard about it, I told my friend that they had totally ripped off Buffy.

Then I called them all cowards. Like ... I didn't get the sense that most people are CELEBRATING this. Maybe a few die-hard Destiel fans who will take any scraps they can get but all of my fandom friends think it was weak.

We are so PAST this being the level of "gay content" we think is progressive, praise-worthy, interesting, or whatever. It's fucking 2020.

Yeah. It's 2020, we should be at "unbury your gays" now. I got the sense that the most common reaction was baffled hilarity. Expectations for SPN are so low that I saw barely any angry reactions.

Yeah, I think for people who are actually following the show, they're waiting until the actual finale to call anything - i think I saw yesterday that there are only, like, three people left alive total? In all of existence? So odds that Cas isn't permadead (or they get an hea in the afterlife together) seem fairly high.

People who aren't still following are just laughing at all of it, I think.

Huh, yeah that does sound like they'll have to fix that with some resurrections. And if nothing else it should be a fertile ground for fix-it fic.

Yeah, I get why people are upset, but 'bury your gays' takes on a different meaning when this is at least onscreen death #8 for him (and that's still less than the other two mcs.) And if they are going to make it reciprocated, no writer worth their beans would do anything but drag it out till the finale.

I think the episode took us all by shock. I'm going to guess though since this is the antepenultimate episode that Cas will come back. Maybe he won't come back in his Jimmy (Misha Collins) form but he'll be back in a woman's body and consummate the relationship with Dean. The way things are going now it wouldn't surprise me.

I watched the show from season 1 (though I haven't seen the last couple of seasons that I plan to eventually catch up on) and let me just say it was unthinkable back in 2005, or even by the time Cas showed up seasons later that one of the main relationships would develop like this. I remember wondering if Cas was going to show up for more than 2 episodes! Times have changed.

(To me, it's especially interesting since the creators / actors were some of the first people who were casual about fandom and shipping. They made a lot of current ways of interacting with a fandom base popular)

Anyway I just wanted to say that even though I'm not in fandom right now, I'm excited by the idea of this episode. (I haven't seen the episode yet, and blocked the spoilers once I realized there were spoilers to be blocked, so I'll find out how I feel about the actual thing later)

And Castiel and Dean and Sam have all died and come back so many times already, I'm just shrugging at that part.

The "super hell" comes from people who have no idea what's going on. It's just the Empty, where angels go when they die. They're permanently asleep there. Except Castiel once woke up in there and annoyed the entity in charge so much it let him come back to life. *g*

If he did that, why did it even let him back? xD It does sound like the fix-its will be conveniently easy to justify.

I'm not up to date on recent events, so I'm not sure about its motivations, or why it thinks it can keep Castiel under control this time. But yeah, fix-its aren't going to be a problem if the show finale doesn't fix it by itself.

My reaction was, "Supernatural is still on?" I felt like I was being thrust back to two decades ago. Especially with the Bury Your Gays trope.

I think that's been most people's reaction every time they heard about the series being renewed in the past couple of years ^^

I'm still watching, though im only in season 14, I always wait for DVDs and then watch a season in one go, the other way is too frustrating for me. But from what I read about this scene and learned during watching 14 seasons is that he won't stay in that superhell for long. And I'm just guessing they'll create a nice ending.

I mean I have very low expectations and don't care as much as I did in the beginning, so if I like it I'll be happy and if not, meh, I figure I have nothing to lose :D

Dann habe ich mir die Szene angesehen, und beinahe Mitleid mit den Schauspielern gehabt. Was für ein Schmarrn. Deans Schauspieler hat zudem seinen Botox-Mund noch immer nicht in den Griff bekommen. Oh well. Manche Sachen sollte man wirklich beenden, wenn es am Schönsten ist.

Ich hab die Serie ja nie geschaut, aber es war ganz unterhaltsam, wie Fans diskutiert haben, ob Dean ein besonders hölzernes Gesicht macht in der Szene oder ob der Schauspieler einfach generell nicht besonders gut ist.
