I got my first fic comment in a different language. I'm somewhat baffled - either your English is good enough to read my fic or you know how to use a translator - but it kinda feels like I reached a milestone.
(I would have understood German, a little, because of my username, but Spanish? Huh, okay.)

I got Spanish language comments too recently. Very short ones; I was able to run them through Google translate and reply in English, but it still felt a little odd.

From what I've heard/seen, Spanish seems to be (one of) the most common for comments in other languages, idk why.

I got a spanish one and a russian one. The russian one said that they liked that my english was simple enough for them to understand. Thanks, I guess. Also kind of a self burn. *shrugs* It is a bit weird. I'd never read a fic in english and then leave a comment in german.

I too sometimes was glad that fic in Russian was written without too many difficult words, but it would not have occurred to me to mention that ^^

I've gotten a couple in Portuguese which I ran through Google translate and just said "Thanks!" in response to, but yeah, I do find it a little odd.

Google Translate is so practical! (I want to assume that people wouldn't have left comments in other languages without a translator so easily available but idk.)

I think it's just that it's easier to read than to write in a language you know some of but aren't really good at. I can read Spanish fic but I'm hesitant about expressing anything more than a short "I liked this" in Spanish.

(I did get a really nice Portuguese comment on a fic not long ago, and I asked a fellow wrangler who's also a Portuguese translator to translate it for me and then translate my response.)

I get that. Come to think of it, basically it's a question of who needs to go to some extra trouble, the commenter or the author, and I would rather receive a comment in a different language than no comment.

Congrats on the milestone! There's definitely a few languages I might be able to read well enough to enjoy fic, but wouldn't be confident about writing at all, even for a comment. (Personally I would probably just limit myself to kudos, but fair enough if someone wants to leave a correctly spelled comment rather than risk saying something wrong.)

Yeah, it's understandable now that I've thought about it, and I prefer a comment in a different language to no comment.

This has happened to be too, though I got a comment in Portuguese. It confuses me too - it's good that we've got Google Translate to lean on, but I'd never think to leave a comment in Swedish on a story written in English O_o
