2011: A Year In Which I Tried Out New Things

I'm two months late for this because I was lazy, but I don't want to skip it because it's nice to see many things I did in a year collected in one post.

One thing that stood out for me in 2011 is that I stopped thinking that I was doing fandom wrong, or not doing enough, or that I wasn't a "real fan", or anything stupid like that. I'm a fan, I'm in fandom, and I'm proud of it. \o/

I wrote less than in 2010, especially commentfic, but I did write two long-ish stories:

Step Outside, my story for the [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon. It's not perfect, but I worked hard on it and I like it very much. I especially enjoyed the worldbuilding and character dynamics I set up. It felt like I was doing something new, something I hadn't read before; similarly to when I wrote Brothers and Comrades in Arms, now that I think of it. (Hm. Maybe that's what's missing in this year's story outline so far.)

Vampire Runaways is shorter, but also a story I worked on and not a commentfic. I still like it, but in the end it started to get on my nerves because I couldn't find a better title. (I still wish I'd found one, but whatever.)

The Atlantis Zoo is a series of drabbles I spontaneously wrote one night for the mcshep_match drabble tree. It got surprisingly many comments, which made me happy, and I still think it's cute.

Shorter stories:
Five things Atlantis and Elizabeth shared over 10 000 years
Five people Rodney wishes he spent more time with
Pegasus Technology (only six sentences and hardly worth mentioning, but I sort of fell in love with the snow snakes.)
Cold Sounds, a Teyla drabble
Kill Them All!, RL-inspired silliness
Most of these aren't archived at the AO3 yet, maybe I'll get around to it one day.

I also wrote a vid commentary, which I wouldn't do again because I'd misjudged the purpose of the community (I thought it was more "look how great this is!" instead of "look at the technical/editorial skills and meta in this!" And I could have chosen a more suitable vid, but oh well.)

In the summer I started Fanlore editing – wheee, Fanlore!
In autumn I became an OTW member (and in November I lost so much sleep because I was trying to follow all the discussions around the election…)
Learning more about fandom through fanlore and about the OTW made me realize again how impressive fandom is. So much potential; the things we can do!
(I might have volunteered for the OTW this term. Let's see how that turns out.)

I started reading more in other fandoms than SGA: Dresden Files, White Collar, Sherlock, Homestuck, Firefly, Avengers… but always only passively. I still consider SGA my main fandom :-)
I discovered anonmemes, which I occasionally enjoy (the trick is to know when to scroll past and ignore.)
I started doing episode reviews, which are a lot of fun, both while writing and later when revisiting.
I started reccing a bit, but not much yet (still figuring out the best format, I think.)
I also became fascinated by vids – fortunately before megaupload shut down, whew! So many beautiful vids. And so many dead links :-(

I met new people and made new friends! *waves* And I became less anxious about posting things that people might not be interested in, I'm not forcing anyone to read what I'm writing. See above: more self-confidence. At the same time I'm always happy and glad that people actually want to talk to me *g* Maybe I'm still working on it.
You are all the best, and I'm very lucky. *hugs*

Short detour into RL: I got good grades at university (I got a merit scholarship!), I went to Moscow for half a year!, I didn't manage to do everything I'd wanted to do (especially not "more sports", "less procrastination", and "less pointless internet surfing"), but overall I'm doing very well.

(I'm already curious what I'll write next year, but hopefully the last four words can stay the same.)

Oh! *slaps head* I didn't even realize that Brothers and Comrades in Arms was written by you! Really liked that one!

I should actually catch up on the last genficathon sometime before the new one goes live...

I discovered anonmemes as well last year. Well, year before actually. Before that I was of the convicion that you cannot have good discussion under anon, now I'm seeing it as a downright perk a lot of the time.

Hello you! :D

I did not always get enough sleep and it was mostly my own fault ;-)

But well worth it!! :)

That's a great round up! Also, wow, you went to Moscow for half a year, that must have been an amazing experience!

Moscow was great! I really should start organizing the 1500 photographs I took... ;-)
