where did the time go

Yuletide fic: posted yesterday. I have to resist the temptation to go back and edit heavily, because I'm pretty sure it's as good as I can make it and I'd just make myself more nervous. I don't like this waiting for reveals thing.
Other than that I don't have any Christmas presents at all :( And only a few ideas. I'm starting to feel guilty and panicky, ugh. Let's hope I find something in the next three days.
For the December meme, a question by
dhampyresa: Tell me about being Austrian in fandom. There's got to be a couple of things that trip you up, right?
Not so much anymore. The biggest difference was when I entered English-speaking fandom and suddenly there were so many different cultures represented that I wasn't at all familiar with.
When I found online fandom I spent some time in German-speaking anime fandom, where everyone wrote about Japanese highschools and they were exactly like German ones. Highschool AUs in English-speaking fandom were very strange: the years don't make sense, there are a bunch of stereotypes used that I was unfamiliar with, and why are they so worried about going to uni anyway? But I've learned a lot by now, especially about the US but also about other countries, and it's become easier.
Specifically Austrian things specifically in fandom, hmm, nothing really comes to mind. I still get extremely excited whenever Austria or something associated with it is mentioned in canon or fic, and I wish I knew more about Vienna so I could set an urban fantasy story here. (There's probably a lot of death magic in Vienna. We sing about graveyards a lot. If I had to pick a couple of things that Viennese magic centers around, it's probably music and death, with some strong Balkan influences.)

Date: 2014-12-21 07:53 pm (UTC)An important question would be when to set it: Now, or during the monarchy? The 1920s would be an interesting time, not too long after the monarchy broke apart so I'm sure a lot of the place-bound magic is still unsettled.
