schneefink: a tiny person on a huge bird before a dawn sky (Skyjacks griffin)
I wanted to finish this fic this year and I did :)

There Are No Emperors
Campaign: Skyjacks/Star Wars fusion(/crossover), where Jonnit is Gable's padawan and Nodoze is their clone commander and Travis is around too, and so are some others. Warning for Order 66, but a fix-it after that.

This one started out as daily writing exercises that then turned into a fic, so I felt much less pressure to polish it than I usually do which was enjoyable.

Only a few more hours and then 2020 is over! I didn't read half the Yuletide fics I wanted and commented on ever fewer, but I have three days without work coming up where I can hopefully catch up a bit. Work has been very busy in December, and January promises to be even worse, but it'll be okay. At least my bachelor's thesis is done, and I postponed my next exam (again...) so I have a little breathing room, which is nice. Maybe I'll even finally get around to those posts I meant to make in December ^^ And my end-of-year review, I look forward to that.

Guten Rutsch!

I posted the third chapter of my Skyjacks/Star Wars fusion/crossover AU There Are No Emperors. (I'm still proud of that title.)

This started as a series of daily writing snippets that I then realized were already almost an actual story when put together. I had to re-write the ending a little, which wasn't that hard once I realized that it's my AU and I can make the plot do whatever I want. But now I have to figure out the epilogue, and turns out that's the hardest part by far. Not only because now that I write the epilogue after posting the main story I treat it like an actual story in my head, which means more pressure; but also because I suddenly have to think about how that canon divergence would go.

My plan is to write at least 200 words each day in November, so far so good.

In September I wrote a bunch of snippets from the same AU and then recently realized that hey, if I edit this just a little it's basically an actual story:
There Are No Emperors
Skyjacks Star Wars fusion. This was a lot of fun. Set during the Clone Wars because the initial idea was "Nodoze would totally be Gable's clone commander."
I thought I had an ending, but during editing I came up with a better idea which means I have to rewrite it now and that's hard, so it's still a WIP (2/3), but I hope to post the third chapter soon.

I also posted two more Dice Disasters snippets: one about Cody's sister and the one where Erica is a D&D player. It's such a tiny fandom but I always get comments and that makes me happy and is very motivating.

Today there was a remembrance march for the victims of the terror attack in Vienna, with several hundred people, and I'm looking at the latest COVID infection numbers and worry. Not the most important but a personal concern, I really don't want to have to work from home again. I'm very bad at it.

Between the terror attack, the pandemic, the US elections, and my uni deadline... yesterday was a bad brain day (at least I went for a run), but today it almost felt like it all balanced out, and I enjoyed the brownies with sprinkles we made yesterday and and felt surprisingly calm. Still did not manage to get any uni work done, however.
Edit: I did manage a few paragraphs after all, which is better than nothing. Small steps.

I also posted a very short Skyjacks snippet about Travis getting bitten by a werewolf that I wrote for [personal profile] sholio's comfortfest back in September: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Full Moon.

I used to be more hesitant about posting stories but by now I figure that if even one person liked it then it's a net positive. I'm also currently editing a Skyjacks Star Wars fusion and more Dice Disasters fic, and I need to start working on my Yuletide fic beyond brainstorming.

I was really looking forward to this episode! And most of it was great, but it was harder to enjoy because I hated what happened in the first six minutes so much.

I was so hoping this would not happen. )

I recently found out that listening to a podcast and doing a puzzle is a great combination, but I'm out of puzzles (and I don't want to take the one I just solved apart just yet), so instead today I tried drawing while listening, and that worked quite well too. I haven't really drawn in, huh, years (I just doodle I lot of shapes) but it was fun.

WHAT. WAS THAT. *high-pitched noises of too many feelings*
James said we weren't ready and he was right. )

I also finally got my Boganalia bandana recently, it's very pretty and I love it.

And then there's the Kickstarter currently running, Skyjacks: The Album! I'm so looking forward to this, the music is so beautiful, and there'll be a beautiful lyric book, and the chords to most songs. There's also a fan lyrics contest for Call of the Sky; I haven't written song lyrics since I was about fourteen but now I'm tempted.

Day 4 and I very much enjoy playing #WaitForMeRPG so far. Writing a chapter a day is a lot, especially since it's supposed to be one story, and I want it to be good, and I keep thinking of more things to add and then the chapters become longer, and it takes a lot more time than I originally thought. And figuring out a time travel plot that makes sense when I don't know what jumps will come when is difficult. For now it's fine, but for three weeks – eventually I need to start doing work for uni again, too…
The best part is playing together with DD, because almost as much as I enjoy writing my own story I enjoy helping her brainstorm hers.

Travis processes the fact that other people are also capable of lying. )

Skyjacks #73
I was making so many excited high-pitched noises while listening to this episode that DD said she would try to catch up as soon as possible ^^ Time to toast the Axel )

You may have been wondering what this "Skyjacks" thing is that I've been having so many feelings about recently. I finally got around to writing a primer! I've never done that before so that was exciting, and I even managed to mostly use words instead of just exclamation marks.

Soundtrack: Call of the Sky

Join the crew of the sky pirate ship Uhuru on their adventures! A teenage mage, a changeling, a mysterious swordfighter and a necromancer try to hide the fact that the captain is a zombie while they fight a megacorporation and eldritch sea monsters and visit festivals.
Campaign: Skyjacks is a hilarious, exciting and dramatic TTRPG actual play podcast with fantastic characters and wonderful music.

You can find the podcast here on the website, or on other podcast distributing sites.
(If you support the show on Patreon you get access to some bonus worldbuilding/background episodes.)

Let me know if there's anything else you want to know! I'm very happy to keep talking about my favorite sky pirates :) And I would love to have more people to talk about them with.
schneefink: a tiny person on a huge bird before a dawn sky (Skyjacks griffin)
When I first listened to Skyjacks it was mostly while either running or in transit. When I switched to listening to new episodes on my laptop in my room when they came at first I thought the latest episodes just didn't grab me as much for whatever reason, until I realized how much harder I found it not to be distracted by other things. Then I listened to two episodes again while running last weekend and found out it's definitely not the podcast, it's me. (TMA is different, it's shorter, not actual play but scripted, and I listen to new episodes while following along on Discord.)

So I remembered a post I saw on Tumblr, "i can only be podcasted when i'm being debuffed by a hand activity", and today while listening to the new episode I took out the puzzle (and puzzle mat) I got last Christmas & my birthday and for the first time in a long while started doing a puzzle again :) A puzzle with 1000 pieces, a fact I overlooked at first, so this is going to take me a while. It's going to be a shiny cat when it's done (this one), maybe I'll even hang it in my room. I've been looking for things to hang up anyway, it's just so hard to decide.
The podcast + puzzle combination worked very well, so I'll do that again.

I only took very few notes for the last few episodes originally, and then before posting I went through them again and there were more things I wanted to mention, but have I mentioned how inconvenient the lack of a transcript is?, they're still missing a lot. yay more procrastination but I do not have the time to listen to them all again right now, shit

Notes for #67-71 are a bit sparse )
schneefink: a tiny person on a huge bird before a dawn sky (Skyjacks griffin)
I listened to the first four episodes of "Skyjacks: Courier's Call", the Skyjacks spin-off, and I mostly liked it. The music and editing was excellent, of course. thoughts and spoilers )

Skyjacks #66, some notes )
schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Default)
Wednesday is currently podcast day: I come home from work and then DD and I listen to new TMA, and then after a little while to let that sink in I listen to new Skyjacks. (And then Thursday is Beholding day, where we watch other people listen to new TMA, which is also fun.)

TMA #172: Strung Out )

Skyjacks #65 )

I didn't really spend time on Discord before becoming a Rusty Quill patron, for the early access chat mostly, but that server has a lot of people so I hardly say anything. The Oneshot Discord is much smaller, so it's easier.
Today in #campaign we had, among other things, discussions about body horror ) and the culture that would spring up around featherweave accordions being played near fire. Clearly an excellent fandom.

I want to make a rec post/primer for Skyjacks, but that takes longer than I thought, so for now, notes for episode #64.

#64: angels and promises )

I've also been thinking about Skyjacks fusions, which is a nice way to boil down what the really important elements of a canon are for me. In this case, sky ships (obviously), and a group of people trying to hide the fact that the captain is a zombie they control.

I think it would work especially well for Leverage: Nate is clearly the zombie captain, and Hardison the necromancer. Sophie is doing most of the work to convince people nothing is wrong with Nate. Parker and Eliot are new on the ship and got involved in the conspiracy entirely by accident – and either they, or Eliot and Sophie, possibly know each other from way back…

For SGA, the zombie captain is Colonel Sumner and Elizabeth does most of the work to convince people everything's fine, but she knows they can't keep it up forever so she organizes something so she can assume leadership – and then she dies, and John and Rodney, as well as new crew members Ronon and Teyla, decide to try the same thing again, except this time it's obviously much harder.

For TMA – well, the choice of zombie captain is obvious, but nobody is sure if he's really dead or not… All of the assistants start out not knowing about the conspiracy. Jon finds out first.

I'm all caught up on Skyjacks! I have emotions.

More sky pirates! I succeeded in convincing DD to give it a try – the guest star of the latest special might have helped ^^

Thoughts with spoilers up to #44.5 )

I'm massively behind on replies and communication in general, hopefully I can get to that after the exam on Wednesday.
schneefink: (FF Kaylee excited)
I have a bad headache today, so when I came home I wasn't up for more than a nap and podcast episodes. But they were great episodes. Thoughts about TMA #169 to hopefully come soon, but in the meantime:

I'm currently listening to Skyjacks episode #22 and making high-pitched noises over spoilers ) :D

I find this stage of new fandoms one of the hardest: already so excited about it but trying to avoid the fandom to avoid spoilers, and being simultaneously excited that there are so many more episodes to listen to and impatient because it'll take so long to catch up.

So many exciting things happened recently, spoilers )
I'm also very interested in the consequences of spoilers )

Halfway through listening & writing this post the new TMA episode was released for patrons (a few hours late) so I stopped in the middle, and wow that was a change in atmosphere ^^ Felt like it took half an hour for my heartrate to go back to normal.

I have a word document where I store notes for posts to make and then never get around to making them. I delete most, but I did want to note that after years of discussing ever December that actually we could make cookies in other months too (apart from chocolate chip cookies, they're different), this year for mother's day we finally did that and made unicorn-shaped lemon balm cookies and dragon-shaped lemon&lavender cookies. Well, when I say "we", I mean DD made those two and I made chocolate chip cookies. All were great and we should do that more often.

This week I'm back to working at the office and it's such a relief. More work, but it's much easier to do, and I can go home afterwards and mostly shut my brain off. Fortunately public transport is still half empty. It does mean I have to start ironing my clothes again, which is annoying. I also decided to change my nail polish from Christmas-glittery to normal dark blue glittery because I never wore nail polish at the office before, but I forgot that every other woman at the office is wearing much fancier nail polish, so I look forward to trying out more options in the future.

I decided not to do a big exam in June but instead in October, because it's one I want to study properly for and I have very little confidence in my ability to do that right now, but October looks to be very busy at work… I'll just have to take care to study during the summer as well.

There was more but I'm busy listening to more "Skyjacks" episodes, I'm having such a good time. I'm at episode 18 right now and I enjoy the entire crew a lot, and Gable is the best.
