The Clone Wars
Jun. 19th, 2015 01:04 am(Yes, the icon is wrong, I should get a generic space icon.)
When I said "suddenly"…. A big reason why I got more interested in Star Wars again now were updates to two great WIPs: A Star to Steer By, an excellent Stargate/Star Wars crossover/fusion (fantastic premise), and Re-Entry: Journey of the Whills, a time travel fic. Both feature clones, which persuaded me to check out the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." I'd heard of it in passing, but never watched it. Everything set before Revenge of the Sith has so much tragedy waiting in the future, I can only take that in limited quantities.
But so far I enjoy Clone Wars! Following this chronological order, I just finished watching 1x12.
- Definite confirmation that all clones are individuals, with different characters and talents, yay. On the one hand it's good to see that the Jedi value them and care about them – but if I understand correctly, they're still technically possessions, I have no idea how the Jedi reconcile their ideals (as I understand them? Or was that wishful thinking?) with what basically amounts to slavery. At least they already started to address that, I'm looking forward to where they're going with it.
- Similarly with droids! They're smart (at least some of them), funny, at least some seem to have emotions – why exactly are they "things"? Anakin says R2 is a friend, everyone else thinks droids are completely replaceable. Maybe R2 is a bit of an exception because he could develop more of a personality because of fewer memory wipes, but then what is the justification for memory wipes? Except security issues.
And great job showing that droids are very important and thus can be very dangerous: nobody suspected R3 to be a traitor before it became too obvious to ignore.
- I like Ahsoka. But why exactly does a 14-year-old Padawan have authority over experienced clone commanders?
And really, Ahsoka doesn't know what's wrong with threatening to torture a prisoner? Do Jedi padawans not have ethics classes? (Anakin is possibly not the best master for her in that regard…)
- The war is between the Republic and the Separatists. Apparently the Republic is unable to give aid to its members when they need it (Ryloth, Rhodia), including food, so why should they be loyal to it? Great strategy by Palpatine. But of course the Separatists can't be too competent because he has to defeat them in the end, so they're evil and their goal is conquest. Planets are caught between a rock and a hard place. I liked how they showed that with Toydaria, in the very beginning even. (But Yoda won't always be there to protect them…)
- I like that Padmé has a big role, but I wish she had fewer action scenes. I like about her character that she has power as a politician, not as a warrior.
- I like Kit Fisto. Shame about his former Padawan. I like that it's a war, so of course there are losses also among the good guys (Nadar, Kait (?) on Ryloth, so many clones, several of them named.) And there's torture, even though this is a show for kids.
I also like that we see the young Jedi be more aggressive than the older ones (Ahsoka and Nadar and Anakin as compared to Luminara and Fisto and Obi-Wan), it makes sense that war does that to people, and it's also a danger, especially for Jedi.
- I want to see Anakin and Obi-Wan have a serious and honest conversation. So far it looks like all they do is tease and goad each other. And sometimes they are sarcastic at other people together, that's fun, especially when that other is Dooku (very nice.) Maybe some people are fine only communicating like that, but to me it seems exhausting and extremely prone to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. And it does nothing to change my mind about Obi-Wan not being a very good mentor.
- There must be a variation of "I have a bad feeling about this" almost every second episode…
