The clone wars were tragic
Jul. 20th, 2015 10:41 pmThings emphasized in TCW 6x01-6x04: the story of the clone army is extremely tragic, and Palpatine is extremely evil. Excellent episodes.
6x01 The Unknown:
- Rex: "we were designed to withstand any stress" – how would that even work, stress/PTSD is psychological.
- Tup repeating "good soldiers follow orders" is so creepy! Now we know for certain that the clones didn't act completely out of their own will when they slaughtered the Jedi, which was honestly my preferred version. The chip is creepy, but it seems even more far-fetched and/or sad that they're naturally so blindly obedient that they would be completely fine with killing the Jedi just like that on the Chancellor's orders.
- Anakin would take on a hundred droids, Rex cautions ("this is stretching it even for you, sir"), Anakin says he's beginning to sound like Obi-Wan. "Look, I don't doubt you could pull it off, but I'm just not sure Fives and I would be around to see it happen." Anakin apparently didn't think of that… but at least Rex feels comfortable bringing it up? Fives feels comfortable joking around with Anakin ("are your scopes… Jedi issue, sir?"), Rex wouldn't because that's not his style.
- Fives has an idea, Rex: this is why he's the ARC trooper. Aww. It's nice to see Rex proud of Fives, especially after the way they met way back.
6x02 Conspiracy:
- Rex to Fives: "Take care of yourself." That's not ominous at all.
- Fives: "You're just a droid. You don't know anything about real duty, or what it's like to have a brother." Droid: "(in regretful voice) I'm sorry. I've always wanted to have human feelings. (cheerful) But I do not! Goodbye." And shortly afterwards Fives talks to AZ3 about the importance of names to clones (yes!), which the droid can't understand. Asdfsdsfgjh I have so many feelings about clones and droids and the connections between them. Maybe one day I'll even manage to sort them out in my head and write them down.
- Directly following: Shaak Ti and doctor arguing about who the clones belong to :( Kaminoan: all clones are property of Kaminoan government. Shaak Ti: we commissioned them, we are responsible for them.
- Kaminoans know about the chips and order 66, of course they do. Dooku tells the Prime Minister "the chip [that Dooku provided] was a safeguard against betrayal by rogue Jedi", haha. The Kaminoans definitely know what they're dealing with.
- Mace Windu even alludes to the fact that more clone troopers may become dangers to the Jedi if something like this happens again…
- Fives being smart and competent! (and co-opting a droid, heh.) But Tup still dies :( I wonder if the implication that the clones die soon after the chip is activated was deliberate. Obviously usually the effects of the chip are a bit different and the clone troopers are functional a while longer, but once all the Jedi are dead and the Empire is a bit more established could imagine that Palpatine wouldn't mind if the clones died relatively soon afterwards, probably to be replaced with fresh ones. The clones already have advanced aging so depending on what other enhancements they got they'll die sooner than normal humans anyway.
- Palpatine is very evil.
6x03 Fugitive:
- Aww, AZ3 considers Fives his friend <3
- Apparently clones can be subjected to mind/memory wipes? Creeeepy. Like droids. My personal headcanon is that droids are mind/memory wiped frequently because otherwise they develop a personality and everyone would like to fool themselves into thinking droids are simply tools.
- Fives wins against several other guards because he's a badass ARC trooper, fuck yeah. And of course he was prepared to swim all the way back.
- "I'm afraid the Jedi have encouraged creative thinking in some of the clones", hah, that's a good word for it. I suspect that also makes them better soldiers, especially on special missions. The Kaminoans made other clone armies prior to this one, I wonder what happened to those and if they never encountered this problem before.
- So now AZ3 is definitely going against orders, helping Fives knock out another clone to infiltrate the facility. I like this guy! If we needed more proof that droids can go against their programming under circumstances, there it is. Fives to AZ3: "I trust you." AWWW.
- The baby clones are creepy. And there are so many of them! What happens to them all? So many deaths in the war…
- Fives: "The Jedi had this done to us?!" Hm, fic where clone troopers stop respecting the Jedi could be interesting. Not sure it's very likely though.
- If it's an aggression inhibitor chip, why the secrecy? Why not tell the Jedi about it from the beginning? It's obvious something is not as it appears here.
- Fives: "I am not a piece of hardware. I'm a living being!" Nala Se: "You were created in our laboratories. You are Kaminoan property." Shaak Ti: "Correction. Technically he is property of the Republic." Ouch ouch ouch.
- Fives to AZ3: "I'll see you on the other side." AZ3: "The other side of what?" Fives, with a laugh: "Ah, droids." Clones and droids <3
6x04 Orders:
- Palpatine: "A Separatist plot from before the war even started! That seems unlikely." SHUT UP YOU ARE EVIL.
- There is a clone bar, makes sense. We know that the public opinion about the Jedi is getting worse, what about the clones? I could imagine people are wary of them.
- Fives: "you ever heard the [mystery] about the people engineered to kill? Engineered to kill their best friends, their leaders?? And they don't even know it?" Fives :((( "I'm a cab driver, I hear stuff like that all the time."
- "Your mother's a droid" xDDD Ahem.
- Fives did manage to tell Rex and Anakin about the chips. Now the Jedi know about them, but they seem to completely believe that it's a "simple" aggression inhibitor to make the clones follow orders more easily. (Which is questionable enough!) Fives also implicated the Chancellor, which probably cemented to Anakin that he was crazy. Rex, maybe…
- "I only wanted to do my duty." FIVES :((( "The mission… The nightmares - they're finally over." In poor Rex' arms! "Don't go" – excuse me for a minute.
- Tup mentioned a mission/nightmares/dreams too, I wonder if that's something all clones share, maybe a byproduct from the cloning process?
- Palpatine: "Each day we grow closer and closer to victory." EVIL. Then there's actual evil cackling, but the Chancellor with that grin is even scarier. EEEEEVIL.
These were the last episodes of TCW that I really wanted to see. Onwards to Rebels! I'm really looking forward to it. There are a couple of TCW episodes that I'll probably watch later, but I want to try and catch up with Rebels before I'm even more spoiled than I already am. I heard good things :)
