I watched Star Wars Rebels, and it was a lot of fun :) I'm looking forward to the second season.

My favorite difference between Clone Wars and Rebels is between Chopper and R2D2. In the very first episode of Rebels the crew of the Ghost takes a vote on what to do, and Chopper gets a vote. Chopper is part of the crew! I love it. He's still technically property, but he's not treated that way (mostly. What were you thinking Zeb.) Nobody would ever think of leaving him behind.

Chopper has his own personality: he's a bit of a dick, encouraged by Zeb, and I know I'd be so annoyed by him if I had to share a ship with him. But he's extremely competent, and loyal. I like his friendship/past with Hera.

I like the crew in general, and I think Hera is my favorite. Excellent pilot, smart, warm, ship captain, rebel cell leader - she's great. I loved how she handled Lando, and Travis, and that she doesn't even tell Kanan details about Fulcrum. I like that she's the more pragmatic one with the bigger picture in mind. She's even willing to leave Kanan behind for the greater good, I liked that a lot, because even though "good of the many over good of one" is a sensible philosophy in many cases in almost all stories the heroes are praised for their "leave no-one behind" ideals (except when it's unimportant background support staff…) Even here Hera later says that she's proud of Ezra for continuing to look for a way to rescue Kanan even though it was a huge risk etc., I was kind of disappointed by that.
I like her and Kanan's relationship, what we see of it is low-key but very deep. The "parents and kids" vibe in the crew reminds me a bit of Leverage sometimes

I like Kanan, and I like that he's sort of… not a great Jedi, and he knows it. He was a Padawan when Order 66 came through, no wonder he has doubts if he's good enough to train Ezra. "Do or do not, there is no try." "How can I do something if I don't try it first?" "Actually that always confused me too, but Master Yoda sure used to say it a lot." Heh.
"There is another way: the dark side." "Never heard of it." "Have you taught him nothing?" xD
"He's unfocused and undisciplined." "Then we're perfect for each other!"
He also Fell once, interesting, I wonder how he found his way back. Hera?
Before the end of season 1 he didn't understand that the Force is greater than fear? That seems like a pretty fundamental Jedi lesson.
Kanan, dear, it's nice and understandable that you don't want another war, but really, what did you think would happen? (He probably didn't.)

What most annoyed me about Ezra when I first saw him were his blue hair and his blue eyes. It seemed like they were trying too hard to make him pretty. Eventually I got used to it. His crush on Sabine was annoying – once he almost got killed because he wanted to impress her! Then we learned that they painted the TIE together and it was the first time I could see them as good friends, I liked that.
He built a lightsaber that also functions as a gun, neat!

Sabine is fun, and I liked her arguments with Hera a lot. It makes a lot of sense that she doesn't like not understanding what's going on again, after she left the Academy. I want to know more about that, and about her background in general. (It makes sense that Ezra gets the tragic missing parents story, but what about Sabine's family?)

Zeb is sort of like Chopper, as in he can be entertaining to watch but I'm very aware that if I knew him he could be very annoying.

I like their ship! Cool ships are important, and the Ghost (with Phantom) definitely qualifies :)

I'm a bit surprised by the depiction of the Empire here. It's fifteen years old, and the infrastructure already seems to fracture quite a bit. I sort of thought Palpatine would have been able to do better. Their methods of finding the remaining Jedi and rebels are quite good, but if conditions were better there would be fewer rebels in the first place. Water rationing, really? Many officers also seem to be arrogant dicks for no reason, I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be so easily accepted within the military for the sake of good relations with the population.

I like the look at the academy cadets, that they're only kids who grew up only knowing the Empire. It's been "only" fifteen years, their parents would still tell them about the Republic, but still.

The Inquisitor is scary. At first I wondered what good that lightsaber (Kanan called it lasersword) ring is in a fight, but if you can throw it and direct its flight with the Force, could be very useful. I wonder how many Inquisitors there are? Did Vader train them? Vader is still the scariest, of course.

One scene has the pilot droid saying "sentients, please prepare for take-off." That might be even better than "Ladies, gentlemen, and variations thereupon", or at least as good.

Guest appearances: Lando was fun! Hey Bail Organa. And Ahsoka!!! She seemed quiet in the brief look we got at her, but I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.

Overall I enjoyed the show, it was good entertainment. It didn't really grab me in a way that would make me want to read and write more about the characters, I'm not sure why but that's generally mostly unpredictable for me. Another plus, unlike Clone Wars where we know it all ends in tragedy Rebels has more hope :)

In looking for links for Metanews, I've seen reviews of a comic (I think based on the fact that it's numbered and already up to #4) titled Kanan - The Last Padawan. Judging by the title, it pretty much has to be backstory.

I don't recall seeing similar stuff for any of the other Rebels characters, but they're doing a lot of comics (I've seen stuff for Obi-Wan, Lando, Leia, and Chewbacca), so it wouldn't surprise me if they get there eventually. Of course, given the way things seem to be trending, they're likely to do Zeb before Hera or Sabine which would be disappointing. I'm a lot more curious about them than I am about him.

The only reason I can think of not to do Zeb is that his story might be too grim and tragic if any part of it is set before his people are destroyed by the Empire. I'm not sure that genocide can be made kid friendly, and Rebels is definitely pitched at children. I doubt even dancing around it would help enough.

Of course, they might just pick up with him, wandering all alone and tragic, after all the horrible stuff has happened. I could see that being likely.
