Yesterday I visited the garden&park around Schönbrunn castle with a friend. I hadn't been there for months if not years, but suddenly it's only twenty minutes away. I should go more often! It's beautiful. Yesterday was still surprisingly sunny and warm, and there are even still roses blooming.
What else did I do the past few days: listen to Hamilton some more, and read a lot. I like the "I really enjoyed the books" view better than "I really did not want to do any work", but they're probably at least equally true.
Rosemary and Rue: I liked this, and I liked Toby. I'd like to be shown a bit more of why she's so great and so many people care so much about her and admire her, it seemed a bit out of proportion. Her self-martyrdom because she's such a failure and everything is her fault and she always lets people down etc. also got a bit tiring.
A Local Habitation: This book has less of Toby martyring herself and it shows more of why exactly Toby is a badass, good.
Toby being friends with the Luidaeg, yes! I also liked Quentin (my guess is his parents are of very high rank), and the night haunts are cool.
About the mystery: I got the Alex=Terrie very soon, but I think I was meant to. I suspected them, not April + Gordan, so good job with that. It was still negligent of Toby not to insist from the beginning to learn of what Alex could do, it's a serial killer investigation ffs.
I did not expect Jan to die, but now there's a computer Dryad Countess, this could be fun.
An Artificial Light: I did not expect Toby to be captured by Blind Michael, nice twist. The Luidaeg really cares about her (no surprise if she really is that lonely.) The plot in this was a bit circular – there, back, there, back, there, back – but hey, she got the kids back. Well, some of them. Katie is lucky Quentin liked her.
Her adversaries got up the power hierarchy pretty fast: Toby killed a Firstborn, now she has to be notorious, right? If Blind Michael was even more powerful than the Luidaeg.
At least Toby realizes now that she tries to get herself killed way too often! Are there faerie therapists?
The concept of Fetches is interesting. I wonder who sent May.
Late Eclipses: Sylvester showing up with the pardon just in time, fuck yeah, awesome moment. The Queen is not entirely wrong, things did start to go wrong a lot when Toby came back from her enchantment, but that's not exactly her fault. I suspect that there's something else going on in the background, the Luidaeg having some trouble of her own would fit nicely with that. What else does the Queen know? Does she know who exactly broke Toby out of jail?
Amandine is a Firstborn, I did not see that coming. She is also apparently not quite as insane as we thought. I expected Toby to get a power upgrade at some point, but not like this. In addition to that she is now a Countess! A changeling Countess, that has to have political ramifications.
I like that Toby finally got Julie to listen, but the same thing happened with Manuel just a few pages later and I can't help but wonder why she didn't just talk to them earlier. At least with Raysel it's clear why.
Poor Sylvester, after his twin brother now his daughter turns evil and tries to kill his wife and her mother. His niece also died, after developing very strange ideas about the survival of Faerie. He doesn't have much luck with his blood family.
I like that Toby accepts the hero role, because fuck yeah. Someone should remind her that heroes have sidekicks and they are occasionally allowed to accompany her. Quentin, for example, he's growing up and learning. Tybalt doesn't quite count, he's King in his own right and has his own responsibilities.
May is independent now! Cool. So now Toby has a sister. Who's dating a raven, I approve.
