schneefink: Babylon 5 (Bab5)

Objects at Rest: This was mostly sappy. Garibaldi promoting his new Board was fun, Franklin asking the new CMO to take the position one day before he leaves and after he already told anyone else is sadly unsurprising, Sheridan and Delenn being almost too cute together was also kind of expected.
The thing that stood out was Lennier, of course. One moment where he could have saved Sheridan and hesitated, for almost too long. I was stunned, my first reaction was "Lennier would never!" But then Delenn talked to Sheridan about certain moments in which people do something uncharacteristic for them that they then spend a long time trying to atone for, and when she says that it resonates because she is most likely thinking of the moment when hers was the deciding vote of the Earth-Minbari war. Lennier did decide to do the right thing in the end (not that he can prove it) and there were no losses. His goodbye speech to Delenn was a bit overly dramatic, but very understandable for him in that situation.
…no, still don't like it.
Londo gives Sheridan and Delenn an urn to give their child on its 16th birthday that contains a Drakh parasite thingy. Uh-oh. Poor Londo.

The River of Souls: Soul hunters! Finally again, I thought we would maybe see more of them, but no. (Not of the technomages either…)
A station like Babylon 5 needs its own lawyers, and the chief of security needs to be much better at knowing what he is or is not allowed to do. I was actually on the brothel owner's side with the permits, until he mentioned using people's likeness without their permission. Did we really need to see Captain Lochley in a corset? The line where the brothel owner said that her likeness was very popular especially with women made me grin, but still.
Other than that nothing really stood out about this movie. LK told me the next one is worse, so I'll see…

The Legend of the Rangers: I would have enjoyed this movie more if I didn't want to punch the main character in the face. I know that's unfair to him, he wasn't a jerk or anything. But he was the main character, he Stood Up For His Principles, he Assembled The Team, he came up with all the ideas to save the ship, and he looks like the cliché Handsome Heroic White Guy. I really liked his interactions with Dulann, and he and Sarah didn't even kiss, which I was afraid they would.
I liked that we got another look at the Rangers, including the difficult integration of other races and their very strict principles clearly based on warrior-caste culture. I enjoyed G'Kar barging in on a Grey Council meeting ^^ We found out that he and Lyta parted ways after a few years.
I rolled my eyes at the "Hand", apparently older and darker and more powerful than the Shadows. Really? So unnecessary, and doesn't make any sense besides. Let's just say they were exaggerating to spread fear and were instead former allies of the Shadows, like the Drakh.
The weapons system was ridiculous. Floating in space and punching energy beams, really? So inefficient. 360° view is convenient but humans are still limited in their sight, and also only have four limbs. I bet someone thought it looked cool and thought no more about it, but unfortunately it was more ridiculous than cool.
I didn't think it was much worse than "River of Souls", though it seemed a bit clunky in places, especially the scenes with David and Sarah.

Call to Arms: Garibaldi knows that Sheridan is acting strangely after receiving a strange video message, and he doesn't immediately request that Sheridan is scanned by a telepath to make sure he's not under any foreign influence? Careless.
O hey, look, technomages! Cool.
So that was a bit weird, but it made a ton more sense once LK explained to me that it was the pilot of the spin-off series. He recommended that I not watch the spin-off, so I probably won't.
The only thing I wanted to know from the spin-off series – spoilers – is what happened to Lyta and the telepaths. Apparently there was a telepath war, the Psi Corps was disbanded, but Lyta died. Lyta :( I choose to believe that at least she died after already knowing that the revolution would be successful, anything else would be too sad.

Sleeping in Light: Last episode. I don't even know how to start.
Reunion! Of all the survivors, and there are so many people missing… Londo and G'Kar, whose death we already saw; Marcus and Lyta, and Lennier apparently died in the meantime too.
Vir is Emperor now. Garibaldi has a daughter (!) and Stephen is her honorary uncle. Sheridan and Delenn's son David is off at Ranger training and doesn't appear. Sheridan was President for almost twenty years before giving the job up, and it went to Delenn next.
Susan! I was so excited to see her again. I was hoping she'd be happy, however she's obviously not satisfied with her role as general. She seems tired, and she says to Delenn she's tired of burying friends. Susan :( I want to believe that she has good friends, that she's not as lonely as the episode made it appear and it just caught her in a bad moment. She takes over as Entil'zha from Delenn, this could be exciting. Hopefully she'll enjoy it.
Delenn will be fine. A bit sadder, but she'll be a great President.
Sheridan and Delenn's last hug was lovely. His actual death was extremely dramatic, with all the light. (The lighting at the end made it seem like he has huge nostrils. Ahem.)
Babylon 5 is blown up! It ends in fire. I was sadder about the station's destruction than about Sheridan's death. "Redundant", ouch. I liked that Sheridan visited it one last time, at least. I was a bit surprised that, since they apparently don't want to use it for parts, they blew up it instead of propelling it into a sun, seems like that would be easier and lead to less debris. There were ships of different races at the destruction; maybe it was some kind of ceremony, to honor the role the station played? That would be nice.

That's it! All done, I've finished watching it. Feels weird. It's been over a year and a half, over two years even if I count from the first time I watched an episode.
Now I finally don't have to be afraid of spoilers anymore! I can finally look at the fandom, I'm looking forward to it. At least eventually, I might need a short break first. It's been so long since I watched the early seasons, I might go back first and rewatch a few of my favorites. ("This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari…")
