schneefinkVienna City Marathon was today! I had a stitch after five minutes, was hungry after ten, and had to walk several times. I usually go running in the afternoon, after lunch, and I knew there was a reason why but I didn't think the difference would be so big. Lesson learned, I guess. But I'm still glad I suggested we do the family relay because I had fun preparing for it. Maybe I'll even keep running after this, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have happened if not for the event.
I started watching "Underground", a show about the Underground Railroad, a network to help escaped slaves in the 19th century US. It's really good so far, I like it a lot: the characters are great and the plot twists are very interesting. I don't know details about US history but it seems to do a good job at portraying that era. These things actually happened, and not that long ago. The portrayals of the difficult decisions people have to make are brutal. It's framed in part as a heist show and I like that aspect, and I have a vague sense of that they're probably doing specific things to make the storytelling work as well as it does but I can't articulate details.
Some of my favorite scenes so far:
- the reveal about August (I didn't know, but I was suspicious from the start)
- every time Cato and Noah threaten each other
- Cato setting the plantation on fire
- Pearly Mae sacrificing herself
- Elizabeth telling her husband to light the lamp
- Sam not shooting his idiotic master
- Miss Suzanna actually being the one who knows how best to affect Pearly Mae
- Ernestine. So much, she's so great.
And, just, like, the whole thing. I'm so curious how many of the Macon 7 will succeed (I wasn't that attached to Zeke, but I really want all of the others to make it – I guess if someone else has to die Moses?, but ideally not), and if Ernestine will "get away with it" and what will happen to her and Sam and James. I wonder how long it'll take until the Macon 7 meet Elizabeth and John and how that will go. I don't really care much about August, but I am curious how he'll end up. I'm looking forward to how the Noah-Cato conflict will develop. I want fic about everyone and everything.
