So I started reading comics again. (Again because between Asterix, Dragonball, One Piece, Darths&Droids, and Homestuck I never really stopped, but always considered them something for in-between.) A lot of comics.
Brief overviews with some spoilers:
Claymore: I was promised awesome women with big swords and tentacle monsters. Then there were bonus beautiful and terrifying tentacle-and-crystal-monsters, cute sidekicks, and rivalry with hidden affection, and just when I almost started to lose interest we got team dynamics :) Seven Ghosts! <3 At the moment it's a bit much that every chapter there's an even stronger opponent, but I still hope most of the good guys are going to survive. Except the unnamed Claymores.
No or almost no gen fic about the seven that I could find, sadly, and I don't ship anyone. (Except maybe Riful/Dauf.)
Tower of God is a Korean webcomic, meaning it is in color and has large pages to scroll down. They are apparently generally less well known than manga, especially this one. But it's very good! First it's a boy looking for his friend, who has to climb a tower and pass various tests to find her. Then we get a lot more interesting characters (Yuri, Koon, Rak, Anak, Androssi...), new friends and then new enemies, and the latest chapter has a very evil cliffhanger. Only 74 chapters so far, easy to catch up! Characters, worldbuilding, surprising plot twists, and I like the art, too. Anak and Androssi are great together. Atm I'm wondering how they're going to deal with the fact that all of the main cast are hopelessly outclassed when it comes to power & strength and some of them are being hunted by Rankers... hmmm.
I definitely recommend reading this one. (I will try to put together a proper primer sometime, but who knows when I'll get to it. Same for the next one.) The fandom is almost non-existent, sadly. Next year I'm definitely signing up for Yuletide.
Noblesse: Another great Korean webtoon. This one is better known, so there are even some fanworks, yay! It's difficult to talk about Noblesse without spoiling much.
It starts out as a hilarious story about a sparkling vampire trying to adjust to the modern world. He meets his old servant, aptly (as we find out later) named Frankenstein, and runs into a bunch of annoying kids that fortunately don't show up much in later seasons. Then there is a shadowy organization, new friends, more superhumans and vampires, and it gets more serious, action-y, but is still funny, only warmer. They could all use hugs, but at least they have tea. RK-4 is great. Fantastic flat share group!
There are a few minor annoyances (the kids, for one - poor Frankenstein, and the beauty equals goodness trope), most annoying for me is the lack of awesome female characters. Of the (hard to define) main cast of 10 people, only 2 are female, and they get the least attention/character development/things to do. Especially poor Yuna, who is almost forgotten. I forgave them for making Seira the cook when it turned out Takeo and M-21 have to do the dishes, though. ^^ Let's see if it gets better.
This one has over 200 chapters by now, which provided hours of very good entertainment and little sleep. If you like vampires, humor, and action, read this comic.
Since I haven't found much fandom activity elsewhere (except on the mangafox forums - not sure yet if it's worth getting an account there) you can expect some excitement and thoughts about future updates here :)
