Writing problems: not writing.

Every time I see someone mentioning that LJ/DW are so much quieter than they used to be (sad but true) I want to post something, even if it's something silly, like a "still here"-flag. Usually I write two lines and then stop though. I have a word document with posts I've been meaning to make that's quite long by now…
Writing problems:
- write something silly that's not meant to be serious
- get good concrit
- accidentally take it seriously
- be too embarrassed to edit because it's so silly why did I write this in the first place *facepalm*
I was invited to a Harry Potter-themed birthday party this week, it was fun. Everyone was sorted into a house when they entered, and there were house points to earn, like for good costumes or themed food/drinks or games. Our Ravenclaw head of house won a round of Werewolf in dramatic fashion, for example :)
One of the ways one could win points was by coming up with Harry Potter-themed pick-up lines, that was also fun. My personal favorite was "It's been too long since I've seen you outside of the Mirror of Erised."
Yuletide fic: Haven't made much progress yet, I've been concentrating on NiF fic (not for Yuletide.) There's this one character I don't have a good feel for, and she's quite important so that's annoying. I could write her in two different ways and it would result in two different stories, one way that makes it much easier for me to empathize with her and one way that I suspect is a little closer to canon. I want to write the latter, but if I'm blocked for much longer I may write the first version.
First line meme
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories. See if there are any patterns.
If your sentence comes from something published on Tumblr, AO3, Fanfiction.net, etc., link to it! Never pass up an opportunity toshamelessly promote yourself share.
1. "Liyang. Listen to mother. Here, drink this wine." (this once, don't wake)
2. A black line appeared in the air in the middle of the otherwise completely white room. First Rest)
3. "Did I do something to piss Geno off?" Matty asked after practice one day. (Accept No Substitute)
4. Willam watched the chest. (Sufficiently Advanced Crystal Orbs)
5. Willam sat in the library with the manual about electricity he was currently studying. (Dark Blue Skies)
6. "This is where we sharpen the skates…"
(If I edited this I would probably delete this and start with the current second line: Fifteen minutes into the tour of the facilities Phil realized that Dana was probably a house gnome.)
(Stick Your Head Out)
7. Sid didn't know how Flower chose the sacrifices. (Sacrifice Your Body)
8. Marc should have known something was up when Geno took much longer than usual to finger him open that night. (Emotional Men)
9. Two months after they met, Dutch sat down cross-legged on a cargo box while Johnny was tinkering with spare parts for Lucy. (Sitting by the Tree)
10. They never see sunlight. (Kadavo)
11. His parents' ship landed while the Penguins played the Devils, near the end of the second period. (Home Is Where My Rink Is)
12. The team became completely and irrevocably his the moment they gave him the C. (Captain's Mark)
13. Sid was so absorbed in his book that he didn't notice someone standing on his patio, only an arms-length away, until the guy cleared his throat. (Flying for Beginners)
14. Robert is lying on his bed, sweaty and satisfied, watching the guy pick up his clothes. (Drawn to You)
15. Simon is back in Pittsburgh a few days before training camp begins. (Losing Down)
16. The groaning sounds of the walls closing and the shrieks of the Griever ring in Minho's ears over his own screams of Thomas' name. (make the night a little less loud)
17. When You Can Play first started, Brian started to calculate. (Rainbow Patches on Our Jerseys (One Day))
18. They spend the first two weeks after they land on Earth on the ship. (Assuming Shape)
19. It was 2:45pm when Brandon entered his hotel room. (Comfortable In This Place
20. The lockout is over, they're going to play hockey again. (Smile When We Play Together)
Of the 20:
- three open with dialogue
- eight open with a name
- ten have some kind of time reference
- ten have some kind of location reference
Just being practical.
(Personally I often find last lines more difficult to come up with than opening lines. Maybe I should do this with last lines, except I worry that I'd be unhappy with half of them.)
