Fic Rec: Pistol for a Mouth
Mar. 20th, 2014 10:57 amI found a fic I wanted to rec and decided to do a rec post because I still have a long "things to rec"-list, but then I realized that the list is so long because I always want to rec multiple things at once but never get around to it, so clearly starting with one is smarter.
Pistol for a Mouth (the Perpetual Survivor Remix) (21183 words) by antistar_e
Fandom: The Book Thief - Markus Zusak, Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Liesel Meminger/Rudy Steiner
Characters: Liesel Meminger, Rudy Steiner, Max Vandenburg, Ensemble
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Hunger Games Setting, Remix, Pre-Canon, Minor Character(s)
Summary: ”Well? How do I look?” He stood in front of her and fisted his hands atop his hips, and Liesel immediately covered her mouth.
Coal dust smeared him black head-to-toe, except for a bare patch that shaped the number “12” on his chest. She drew closer, whispering, “Rudy, it’s even in your ears!” [Hunger Games AU.]
Knowledge of both canons is highly encouraged. Familiarity with the minor characters from both canons is also highly encouraged, since a lot of them make an appearance.
Warnings for character death on both a Hunger Games AND a Book Thief level. Explicit depictions of grief, nonexplicit depictions of violence. References to reproductive coercion and oppressive totalitarian tactics.
Why I loved it: A beautiful story that manages to combine the haunting tone of The Book Thief with the dystopic world of the Hunger Games. The plot fusion is done extremely well (spoilers), and so is the ending.
(In RL news, I know delegating is a good thing but it's hard to remember right now when I have to supervise M. organising a school workshop and it would be so much easier & more efficient & less stressful to do it on my own. Long-term benefits, I hope.)
