3 recs for long fics
Sep. 16th, 2018 11:54 pmI reread a book for which I'd already written half of a fic I liked a lot and found out I misremembered a key detail and the entire premise doesn't work. Hmpf. (I did manage to rework the premise but I'll have to start from the beginning again, and it'll likely be longer.)
Have some recs for long fics where I thought canon knowledge was not necessary to enjoy them. (That also means if characters are OOC I have no idea, and don't really care.)
Save A Horse, Ride A Dragon by
chaoticTenebrism (Motorcity)
176k, Mike Chilton/Chuck & Mike Chilton/Chuck/Julie Kane/Dutch/Texas, fantasy AU
Summary:It's been a long time since Mike had a knighthood, a kingdom, a king. But fortunately for him, the mysterious Lord Vanquisher has taken up residence in the ruins of the capitol city, and he's willing to make Mike and his mercs an offer they don't want to refuse.
Why I love it: Do you, like me, like stories with kings and magic and dragons and adventures and bravery and cunning enemies, do you have a fealty and loyalty kink, and do you enjoy reading about people pining incl. angst and figuring out poly relationships? Then this is the perfect story for you, and as an additional bonus it has many very beautiful illustrations.
Countless Roads by
nirejseki (DC TV: The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow)
232k, Leonard Snart/Mick Rory, AU with ghosts
Summary: Due to a family curse (which some call a gift), Leonard Snart has more life than he knows what to do with – and that gives him the ability to see, speak to, and even share with the various ghosts that are always surrounding him.
Sure, said curse also means he’s going to die sooner rather than later, just like his mother, but in the meantime Len has no intention of letting superheroes, time travelers, a surprisingly charming pyromaniac, and a lot of ghosts get in the way of him having a nice, successful career as a professional thief.
Why I love it: This was so much fun! Clever, too, and a mix of angst and fix-it (I could tell even before I knew anything about the canon), and great worldbuilding and plot and pacing and a very nice ending.
Tales From the House of the Moon by
Resmiranda (Inuyasha)
326k, Kagome/Sesshomaru, post-canon (I think)
Summary: Kagome, now in college, discovers the tale of Sesshomaru and Rin. Grief can be a prison, but the bonds of love are not easily broken.
Why I love it: This is a romance between a young human woman and a centuries old demon lord, and it is built very slowly and in full acknowledgment of how far the gap is between them and does so very well. It also has character growth and adventures and thoughts on storytelling and fairy tales.
