Yuletide fic: The Wizard's Tower

For Yuletide this year I wrote Steerswoman fic:
The Wizard's Tower
9.4k, Rowan & Reeder post-canon adventure
Summary: The wizards are preparing for war. Rowan investigates.
This was a challenge but a fun one. Writing from Rowan's PoV was very intimidating: she's so smart! I've written smart characters before but those were characters that, hm, use their intelligence in more specific fields or ways, unlike Rowan, who constantly observes everything around her and tries to figure out how it works. I had to write a character who is smarter than me, but has a certain worldview and less information than I do. The story needed to make sense from both perspectives and Rowan would let me handwave fewer details than most other characters.
LB and my two flatmates got used to my questions like "there's a secret tower/observatory in the middle of a forest, what's the diameter" and "is a hologram system like this plausible" and "what kind of security measures would be in place for something like this." It took me quite some time to come up with a good combination of plot and wizard's things, but I enjoyed it. I was lucky that Isara is almost never mentioned in canon so I could make up almost everything. The plot was the hard part, fortunately writing Rowan and Reeder's relationship was fun.
I like the story I ended up with :) Many thanks to
genarti for beta-reading and encouragement. It's the third-longest fic I've posted (second-longest Steerswoman fic, and I've now written the two longest Steerswoman fics by far.) Not a big response, even compared to Dark Blue Skies two years ago, but my recip liked it so it's a success.
