schneefink: Mu Qing looking skeptical (NiF skeptical Mu Qing)

I did my taxes, whoo! Like an actual adult person. It wasn't even that difficult, and I got a surprising amount of money back :) (I'm missing two bills but I looked up what the things cost and whatever, nobody will check.)

I also wrote my labour law exam today and even though I made some stupid mistakes (like overlooking an entire question -.- ) I think I should pass. I was feeling very positive about that and other stuff we got done and then I realized that I put my therapy appointment tomorrow during the tax law lecture *sigh* Great job me. Fortunately lecture attendance is not mandatory, but it doesn't help my doubts over whether to even seriously attempt to pass the tax law exam, or wait and do it in October. Pro doing it in October: more time to study, a lot less stress with moving now. Con: …feels kinda embarrassing, because it would have been totally doable, especially if I'd been just a little better about studying regularly.

I found out DD had never seen Pacific Rim, so we watched the movie. I liked the characters less than I remembered, but I still really enjoyed the "giant robots vs. giant monsters" part of it :)

Then we watched Pacific Rim: Uprising. It had parts that were a lot of fun, especially the action sequences, but also many facepalm-worthy things. Perhaps the thing DD and I were most annoyed about was that nobody wears gloves, not even when touching Kaiju entrails, what the FUCK. Safety, anyone? That is just. It's such a small thing, but it's so avoidable and makes the characters look so stupid.

Also, why is the Jaeger program still so active – more active than ten years before, even? Didn't they have ten years without a single Kaiju attack, because the breach was sealed? Why would they still put so much money into the program, and the development of new drones etc. I didn't even get the impression that they were expecting new breaches, they just built new Jaegers – why, exactly? Who even finances that? Yes, future technology, but they also had to recover from the Kaiju attacks only ten years before.

And the cadets, jesus. The first movie was all about how rare it is to find someone you're drift-compatible with, most of the pairs we saw were either related or married. And now all the cadets signed up on their own, and have to hope that they'll find their soulmate – but we never even see them test that, we only see them trying to drift, which, considering how intimate the drift is, seems like a horrible violation. And apparently it just works out that they can all drift together to pilot the Jaegers they have? Yeah, right. The first time Jake and Nate drift together after so many years is not in a simulation but in a Jaeger, how stupid is that, and it does not work out that well, but after that it's just magically okay, they don't even have to work on it or talk to each other or something, okay… After how much I liked the idea of being drift-compatible being something rare and precious, I disliked how it was handled here.

Most of the other stupid stuff can be handwaved by rule of cool (like Newton's Kaiju drones coming out of the water before trying to create breaches or the three Kaiju becoming one super-Kaiju.) In addition to robots vs. monsters, this movie also gave us robots vs. robots, the natural evolution :) …humanoid fighting robots are still a stupid idea but I mostly manage to forget that. Jaegers still look like Gundams to me.

I didn't understand why Jake had to be a thief, and most of the movie I thought he was an asshole. (Actually I think the first scene where I liked him was the snowball fight with Amara, and that was at the very end.) I didn't care that much about Amara but mostly liked her, and was indifferent toward the other cadets. Liwen Shao and the other officials were okay. I liked Hermann much more than in the first movie, and Newton less even before we found out he's been brainwashed, though I liked that plotline.

After we watched the movies DD listened to Thaumatrope and she stayed up an hour later than usual, which means it was a great success, and then we talked about all the angst, because both fandom and friendship thrive on shared suffering and it is wonderful.
