I watched "Detective Pikachu" yesterday, with LB and a friend who we used to play Pokémon with more than fifteen years ago. There was a lot of nostalgia :)
I didn't know what to expect from the movie, I just hoped it'd be entertaining and fun, and it was.

All the Pokémon were great :D I loved seeing them everywhere. I couldn't possibly pick a favorite.

Tim and Lucy are very believable young adults: competent in some areas but really stupid in many others… Like Lucy stealing the keys for the secret facility, and then never considering that there might be security cameras around *facepalm* At least Tim has his grief as an excuse, and Pikachu his amnesia as the reason why he wasn't even that good a detective. The plot did remind of a game – clue one, conveniently leading directly to clue two, leading to clue three, etc. I liked that the romance was barely there, basically just an acknowledgment of mutual attraction.

Overall the movie was OTT as expected. I thought the Torterra garden was a bit much (someone must have noticed the earthquakes before now); LB also thought the villain's entire plot was too much and he "should have just tried to take over the world like a normal egomaniacal supervillain."

I completely failed to anticipate any of the plot twists. I really should have realized when we first saw a Ditto turn into a person, or a Pokémon and a person merge… ah well, this is not a movie I watched with my brain turned on ^^

One exception, I did realize how suspiciously Howard behaved. It sucked that they implied that he conceived his evil plan because he's "stuck in" (I think he said) a wheelchair. Really? -.- Also, the guy is at least a millionaire and has massive influence over the entire city, he could have done so much for accessibility…

Instead, he experimented on and mind-controlled poor Mewtwo. Second time this extremely powerful and intelligent Pokémon has been captured and used by evil scientists.

After I got home I of course immediately (briefly) checked out the fic on the Archive, fortunately there is some. Mostly (from what I saw) post-canon, which makes sense because the ending leaves a lot open. Yeah, Harry is back, but Tim lost his Pokémon partner (not only is Pikachu his dad's, but the Pikachu he became partners with doesn't really exist anymore), and the father-son bonding won't be easy either.

I was inspired to read up on the current state of Pokémon (the last game I knew well was Crystal, though iirc the last one I played a few times was Ruby.) Apparently there are Mega Evolutions now! Past me, whose self-insert had a team made out of fictional higher evolutions, feels smug. (I had the next evolutions of Pidgeot (Taubokhan), Rapidash (Pegana), Vaporeon (Aquilea) – these three I still knew off the top of my head – and Incognito (Icogg.) Yes the names were very creative.)
Actually I had two different Pokémon self-inserts, one of them a very successful Pokémon trainer and the other a near-feral child who grew up among wild Pokémon in the Viridian Forest. Well, technically three, as I just saw when I checked my old notes, but I'd completely forgotten about the third one and I don't think she ever got much of a story at all. I'd also forgotten that I made paper pokéballs for each of the original 151, and I drew and made A5 "cards" for each of the original 151. Some of the drawings even look nice! I'm glad I still have them.
