schneefinkI finally rec some fic on a Thursday! Yay procrastinating on studying! Ahem. Three long ones, imo no canon knowledge necessary:

Feynite (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System)
110k, Shen Qingqiu/Luo Binghe (+side pairings), harem AU
Summary: Wherein Shen Yuan transmigrates into a harem intrigues romance novel (gay edition), Yue Qingyuan really fucks up, Liu Qingge is not suitable for his job, and no one even remotely sees Luo Binghe coming.
What I knew about canon beforehand: Nothing, and it was no problem at all
Why I love it: I couldn't stop reading this fic until 3am, and then read the other shorter fics in the series the next day. It's fantastic. So much angst, and pining, and EMOTIONS, and tropes, and just *flails* It continually hits just the right amount of drama for me. (Usually I'm very skeptical of protagonists this oblivious, but to be fair he has a much better excuse than most.) I then rec'd the fic to DD, who has read the novel, and she said it's exactly like canon if canon was a harem story.
Nocturne bynirejseki (Final Fantasy XV)
153k, mostly gen, 'taur AU (everyone is a centaur except not only horses but all animals) kid fic
Summary: In which Cor Leonis loses his temper, accidentally acquires a kid, and tries to single-handedly dismantle the Lucian immigration system – and that’s before he and his lawyers find out about this Prophecy business. If the Astrals think Cor’s going to let his kid’s best friend die without a fight, they’ve gotten the wrong cheetah ‘taur.
What I knew about canon beforehand: bits and pieces of the characters and plot via fannish osmosis (this fandom is very good at h/c), none of which was necessary to enjoy this fic
Why I love it: Two of my favorite genres of FFXV fic, Cor-adopts-Prompto and fix-it fic, together with some great worldbuilding and wonderful close and extended and chosen family feelings and exciting adventures and a large cast with wonderful relationships. There's a lot of fluff (Prompto is a literal puppy) and a little angst and a good dose of h/c, and a wonderful OC badass lawyer lady with amazing problem-solving skills.
Pandemonium byxparrot (Gintama)
70k, gen, h/c
Summary: The Yorozuya trio gets an unexpected reward. They really should've checked their daily horoscope before accepting: Beware of old women bearing gifts, don't count your lizards before they're hatched, and be careful when life seems too good to be true, because it might be a sign that everything is soon going to go very, very badly.
What I knew about canon beforehand: Aliens take over the world during the samurai era.
Why I love it: This fic spans from fun and crack to epic drama, centered around a fantastic example of one of my favorite h/c tropes,

In the first half I found it a bit slow in places, probably because I don't know the characters, then Dramatic Event X happens and from then on it's a roller coaster ride of feelings and awesomeness.Presumed Dead.

(one word of advice: if you do start it, begin with episode 3, which is where the story proper starts, covering the same ground as the first manga chapter. Episode 1-2 are a standalone anime-only OAV split in two parts, which is best watched later on, after you've already found out who everyone is and have a better feel for the show's comedy style.)
