TMA Rarepairs Exchange Letter
Jan. 3rd, 2020 10:27 amHi! Thank you for writing for me! :D
I discovered The Magnus Archives only recently, but I love it a lot, and Gertrude is one of my favorite characters. What I find particularly fascinating in TMA is the "line" between human & monster, what makes a person one or the other, what does it even mean, the role of choice, choice under duress, and who cares about it and why.
Gertrude said of herself that she couldn't afford a conscience, and she was ruthless – all in pursuit of a greater goal, for the greater good. How did she become like that, did she have limits, what did she think about it? How much of it was "her", and how much was what she thought she had to be? What did it mean for her connections with other people?
Gertrude Robinson & Mary Keay & Gerard Keay:
Any two of these three have a very interesting relationship, and putting all three of them together makes it even better. Gertrude and Mary are similar in several ways, and Gerard is caught in their orbit.
What if, for example, Gertrude had contacted Gerard much earlier? What if, at some point, Gertrude had to ask Mary for assistance? What if Gertrude managed to counter Mary's ritual but kept her page?
Or, consider: Star Wars AU. Mary is a Darksider who makes her own holocron, which even after her death forces Gerard to continue as her apprentice. Gertrude is – or was – a Jedi. They meet. (Jonah Magnus is Palpatine, obviously. Brutally killing him is always a plus.)
Gertrude Robinson & Alice "Daisy" Tonner:
What if Gertrude and Daisy met? Maybe one of them happens to rescue the other, and/or almost kills the other, or Daisy investigates something at the Institute... For Gertrude, a contact among the Sectioned police officers could be useful, and/or a Hunter ally. Maybe she could help Daisy realize what's going on and control the Hunt better. Or maybe this time it's Gertrude who uses Daisy as her personal attack dog, either by convincing her it's the right/necessary thing to do, or possibly she too uses blackmail.
(While I love Daisy&Basira together, I prefer no romantic Daisy/Basira.)
Gertrude Robinson & M (James Bond):
I'm specifically thinking of Judi Dench's M here. What if these two characters met? Maybe even worked together, once or even more often? There's some similarities that would be interesting to explore – both of them are familiar with making the hard choices – and maybe both would enjoy knowing about the other. This could be set either when they're both already older, or alternatively also when they're both still young and just got started in their line of work.
