schneefink: green cassette tape saying "statement begins... ...statement ends", from TMA (TMA statement cassette darker)

Finally catching up on TMA episode reviews! I might be procrastinating on uni work again, ahem.

#173: Night Night
A strongly-worded letter just doesn’t feel as forceful when it’s addressed to "whichever Dread Power it may concern."
xD

Nope, I had not thought of the children... Excellent choice of domain and avatar though. Callum was disquieting (but his interaction with Jon was also a bit funny), and his powers to invent monsters are cool.

Oh Martin. "There has to be something we can do" but there's not :( It's just taking Martin a long time to accept that, especially since with Jon being able to destroy avatars that reinforced the illusion of having power over this world. And Martin keeps trying to push that on Jon, but finally Jon is pushing back: "Tell me what you want me to do, and I will do it!" And even after the statement, Martin still clings to the belief that they can stop this, once they arrive at the Panopticon. Jon doesn't.

"Thank you for not hitting me this time" – I think that was well done, just the right timing, because so far every time Martin hit him (twice, iirc) it made sense that Martin thought it was the only way to snap him out of it, but it's good that Jon reminds him that it's a last resort.

#174: The Great Beast
For me the "worst" part of the statement was Mehreen's family not believing the danger. Everything's fine.
The flesh colossus was cool/gross too.

Martin: 'are we there yet?'
Jon: "Fine. Three days."
Martin: "Thank you! Wait. What counts as a day?"
Jon: "What an excellent question."
Martin: "Oh my god… You can be infuriating sometimes, you know that?"
Jon: "Yes :D"
xD
It's odd how this season is in some ways the funniest so far. I don't think we've heard Jon smile this much before! Some much-needed balance to the apocalypse and much appreciated.

Simon! So cheerfully enjoying being evil, complimenting them both, and complaining that trying to kill him would be rude. He is fun.
Martin's extremely negative reaction to him was interesting. I wonder if part of it is because of Simon having worked with Peter, and as Simon pointes out of Peter had won none of this would have happened – I can't stop wondering if Martin still blames himself sometimes for not having killed Jonah when he could.
Martin did a good job of not sounding overly intimidated when he met Simon the first time, but it makes sense that a lot of that was an act. Also, being thrown off a rollercoaster is a serious threat, even if it may sound mundane in a world of monsters, but it does kill normal people like Martin!

Helen is really not helping, and not trying to xD I love these earnest, complicated conversations between Jon and Martin about what to do, with hurt feelings on both sides sometimes but always also so much respect and consideration for each other.

#175: Epoch
The Extinction! All the ways in which humanity is doomed, with bonus umbrella cursing. (The first time I found that funny, but then I read too much meta about umbrella metaphors and accidentally caught feelings. Its purpose was to protect people but it's in the wrong place for that and broken, it can't protect anyone anymore.)

Some more details about Jon's powers, nice, plus some metaphysical thoughts about god etc., and Jon refusing to sit on a gross couch with Martin.

#176: Blood Ties
There are several things in this episode I wouldn't have caught if other people hadn't talked about it, like that Jon was almost certainly walking so slowly because he was trying to put himself behind Martin as bait for Trevor. Unfortunately that's hard when you're the one who knows the way.

Martin: "It's not a betrayal if you're doing it to help."
[Me: Noo that's not how it works.]
Jon: "I'm not so sure."
Martin: "Look, if it was me in her shoes, I'm sure I'd forgive you. It's for the best."
…isn't it convenient that there's a test case just a few minutes later! Which Jon already pretty much Knew would happen. That makes this conversation even better.

Yeah, Jon is very aware just how much better of a time they've been having than pretty much anyone else…

Jon asking Martin to trust him, very nice :) And Martin of course immediately aware that this bodes not well, but he does.

Jon seems so relaxed, even amused and smiling during the entire encounter with Trevor, while Trevor holds a knife to Martin's neck. Trevor is prey right now, bait, even, but if Jon had shown fear that might have turned again.

'What is something only the real you would know' is far more useful in theory than in practice ^^ Jon and Basira interacting again is so much fun already. I really look forward to more of that!

The six week hiatus – three weeks, now – is not too long and it does give extra time for theories and stories etc., or for me to catch up on these, or hopefully finally make the rec posts I keep thinking about, fingers crossed. Plus, we get some fun little extras:

Live Show
Omg Jon and Martin's first meeting! "You haven't seen a dog, have you? "In general, or…?" xD

What the Ghost? – The Devil's Dance
That was fun! The puns and special sound effects made me grin, and Georgie suffering through reading the ads was the best part, especially the last one: "privacy is just another word for loneliness???"

Fluff episode #3: In the Public Eye
THAT INTRO, Alex what was that. The first two were bad enough, but this one *facepalm* (Still not over "part-time nightmare merchant, full-time sweetheart.")
This was my least favorite of the fluff contest winners so far, and the one I personally thought felt most out of character to how I see everyone. Glad it's not canon.
