It's been a few weeks since my last D&D campaign update, and now is a good time because we're on a break next week. A lot happened! So much worldbuilding/lore.

We had already found out that that elves, dwarves, humans etc. colonized this world almost two thousand years ago, forcing the native population (mostly sentient ~animal races) off the main continent, and to fight back the natives made a very ill-advised pact with a demon that's driving them to the brink of extinction. The reason why the natives were at a major disadvantage was because before the colonization this world had no magic. This world still has no native magic or its own magical weave: magic is siphoned through the still-open gate from the world the colonizers came from, Hiberia. People left Hiberia because of the abrupt rise of sentient evil undead.

We found out that Commandante van Buren, himself originally human, has become a cult figure among the natives because he promised to destroy magic, i.e. cut the siphon. Since the unstable magic in this world makes belief incredibly powerful, he's now well on his way to becoming a demi-god.

More recently we managed to talk to a few people who were alive two thousand years ago, like an undead dragon and a vampire, and found out even more.
The reason why its population left Hiberia was because a dead god in the form of a moon arrived. The zombie god moon, or ZGM as I like to call it, killed the sun god and soon several other gods as well, and the rest of the gods hid. Nobody managed to destroy the ZGM or its avatar, so people called upon the gods of the Forgotten Realms for assistance and set up a ritual to seek out a new world. To create the ritual they cut Hiberia's god of magic in two. One half of the god is on each side of the gate, and the gate will stay open as long the god stays alive.

The god of magic is unsurprisingly no longer sane, but still powerful. Van Buren somehow got noticed by them, tasked to destroy the gate, and then cursed when he couldn't.

Bonus fun fact: there's the remains of a ZGM above this world as well, and the appearance of new gods might attract a new one or wake this one up from hibernation. But the Mages Guild doesn't think that could happen and is unconcerned. The Artificers were concerned, but coincidentally their guild was outlawed and all of them killed.

The lack of a native magical weave in this world means that magic isn't automatically stabilized, i.e. any weather spell destabilizes larger weather systems, fun stuff like that, and the massive power of belief that gives people with followers a ton of power. The Mages Guild stabilizes the northern continent, but doesn't bother with the southern continent because pretty much only natives live there.

Most of our party are magic users and feel conflicted about the idea of cutting this world off from magic. It would definitely have very unpleasant side-effects: many magical creatures might outright die, power struggles and wars would be pretty much inevitable, and the entire infrastructure of this continent is not set up to work without magic, including the food supply.
Meanwhile, my character is both a martial fighter (though she does appreciate magical equipment and buff spells a lot) and very aware that the current system is neither sustainable nor fair, considering the on-going slow genocide of the natives.

One option that we're currently thinking about is attempting to go back to Hiberia, kill the ZGM, bring back Hiberia's native gods, beg them to fix the damage magic did to the new world, and then cut the gate, after allowing everyone who doesn't want to live without magic to return to Hiberia. It's definitely going to be exciting!
