More due South

After watching the pilot of due South I thought that the show was probably not for me, but I decided to watch a few more: 2x01 because it was recommended, 3x01 for the new character introduction, and the two-parter finale.
2x01 "North" was a fun wilderness adventure with lots of good character interactions, some exciting and/or fun moments etc. With two ghosts! I enjoyed it, but it didn't particularly make me want to watch more.
I had to watch 3x01 "Burning Down the House" to meet Ray Kowalski, of course. I had vague spoilers about what happens, but I didn't expect that introduction! Even if fans back then knew about the actor change, the new guy being introduced as "Ray Vecchio" must have been a surprise. (Not surprised that the Ray Wars got heated.) My favorite part of the episode was RayV's call to Fraser before he goes undercover. The two-sided undercover mission has a lot of potential, and suddenly I was almost interested in finding fanfic.
To finish my glimpse at the series, we watched the series finale "Call of the Wild," where a lot of the potential of the two-sided undercover mission pays off, and I was delighted. I loved every scene with both Rays, and every scene with RayV, and every scene with RayK being insecure about his place now that RayV is back. (I didn't care very much about the actual plot, except enjoying the ridiculousness of the paraglider mounties and appreciating Fraser telling his dad not to murder the guy who killed Benton's mom.) It became clear to me that obviously the entire series was set-up for this storyline, and suddenly I'm almost interested in watching it under that lens. (Only almost because you still have all the other context, but I want that storyline in other contexts/fandoms.) Also, clearly the correct opinion about the Rays is that the most interesting thing about either of them is their relationship with each other and, almost more importantly, with the idea of each other.
I'm glad I checked the show out, at least. I'd welcome episode or fanwork recs focusing on my favorite parts.

(I ended up writing a Gen RayV + Fraser fic for a prompt on there, but it's super spoilerly for some S1 episodes and I don't think it makes sense without watching them fwiw.)

Date: 2021-07-30 05:14 pm (UTC)The way the show set up the switch seems to make heated fan arguments almost inevitable. I read the Fanlore article on the Ray Wars and kept nodding to myself and thinking that this unfortunately kinda made sense or at least was not very surprising.

Date: 2021-07-30 05:46 pm (UTC)It’s post canon, early stages of Ray V/ Ray K, by DesireeArmfeldt who’s a very good writer. Six Kinds of Pool - https://archiveofourown.org/works/32177731.
Another excellent writer is Feroxargentea, who writes mostly Fraser/Ray K. Often complexities and angst, plus great plots and always eventual happy or hopeful resolutions.
If you like threesomes I wrote a post-canon Fraser/RayK/RayV fic Can’t Run Forever - https://archiveofourown.org/works/21802081

Date: 2021-07-31 04:28 am (UTC)Luzula is also very good, mostly Fraser/Kowalski but there's an excellent genfic fusion with Temeraire where Fraser's a dragon rider and Dief is his dragon. Partners in Exile, https://archiveofourown.org/works/995197
And (all Fraser/Kowakski) two excellent big name writers from the first wave were Speranza and Resonant.
