SOMA: one station after another
Dec. 14th, 2021 10:42 pmThis morning on the radio someone said "…very worried about Omicron," and my tired brain thought "but I only just reached the station yesterday! …oh."
I finally made it out of Theta. That last level in Maintenance sucked, it was so dark and confusing and so many monsters, I used walkthroughs a lot here because I did not want to do that again. (I only died once though, to my surprise.)
I think I miss some of the personal tragedies because I forget names and dates, or maybe they're not meant to all hang together yet? The more I've heard about a character the worse their death, like Wan's (self-sacrifice so Strohmeyer and Alice could escape) and Strasky's (suicide out of despair, while – presumably – Strohmeyer and the others with him survived, at least for a while.)
Today I explored Omicron. I had already started to suspect that there were at least two parties at play, one that wants Simon to progress and one that doesn't, and Omicron confirmed it. So many questions! Apparently there's another digital consciousness(es) in "eternal suffering" that want Simon to "get the virus" (?) and destroy the WAU, and also bring the structure gel to Alpha (?) in the Abyss. I was disappointed that Simon didn't discuss any of that with Catherine, but also, Catherine is so fixated on launching the ARK that I don't think she'd be willing to think of alternatives.
And then there were two Simons!! Somehow, even though we know that original Simon didn't die after the scan, I didn't think about what that would mean, and then suddenly Pressure Suit!Simon was looking at Diving Suit!Simon and it was very creepy (and cool.) I didn't kill DS!Simon. (I already kinda want the fic about DS!Simon waking up afterwards, with Catherine gone, the Pressure Suit gone, and only the monsters around…)
The descent to the ocean floor was cool (the bright colorful jellyfish!) The "visit" by that one monster was ominous! On the way to Tau I was attacked by fish a lot, and walked through a cave of deep sea spiders, but I made it. Next time, Tau.
