SOMA: made it to the end

I finally finished playing SOMA! Took me much longer than expected, about/almost 17 hours (I left it running while paused sometimes so idk), but I did most times try to find as much of the story as I could. I didn't get all the answers in the end that I'd hoped for but the ending was still satisfying despite the open questions, and it'll probably take me a few more days at least to think it all over.
So basically it's been Simon-3 the entire time, with his memories of having been Simon-1 and Simon-2. (Technically there could be other versions we don't know about, but numbers are easier than original, diving suit, and pressure suit.) At first I was almost amused that he forgot that this could happen (not like he didn't see an example when Simon-2 was copied), but otoh it's understandable he didn't want to think about the possibility. And then he accidentally destroyed Catherine's cortex chip :( Now he really is all alone.
Well, except for Simon-2, if he didn't kill him, and the WAU if he didn't destroy it and the people it kept "alive", and Sarah if he didn't kill her… Relatedly, I was glad to see that there's quite a bit of post-canon fic :)
There should be two versions of Catherine in the ARK now, right? (Unless the newer one overwrote the old scan.) Only sixty people… (I can't remember if the survey ended up in favor of artificial "people" added to the simulation, I think yes, so more not-quite-yet-people.) And they're all people who spent months trapped together in incredibly tense conditions, including some personal conflicts (Catherine-3, e.g., knows that Pedersen killed Catherine-1), so it won't just all be conflict-free in paradise either.
The Omega Space Gun being not only underwater, but also the machine being surrounded by water seems, uh, far-fetched, but otoh I was kinda glad to get another underwater sequence not running from monsters at the end. The underwater sequences were many of my favorite parts.
I'm still not entirely sure what I think about the WAU… I'll have to think on it a bit more.
I'm glad I played this game, and almost entirely without spoilers too (I didn't even watch the trailer.) I enjoyed it a lot, and it also made me more willing to give other horror games a try. (Inscryption sounds intriguing...) I'll most likely play it again in Safe = Story Mode eventually, not sure how soon. In the meantime I look forward to looking at the extra materials and resources etc. online. I already found a helpful timeline.
I've also decided that I won't start playing another new game this month, there's too much to do. (Even though there's so many games I already own that I want to play… still no time machine though.) I'm so busy with work that I've had barely any time (or more accurately, brain/energy) for uni or even Christmas preparations. At least I managed to finish a second draft version of my Yuletide fic that I'm quite happy with.
