I thought I felt better this morning so I went back to work (good timing too because our boss returned from his three month recovery + rehab), only for my colleagues to send me home in the afternoon when my cough got worse again and then the doctor told me I have bronchitis. Uuugh. We have so many deadlines coming up too.
I infected DD again, of course, but she's not doing as badly yet and hopefully won't. Unfortunately we haven't done a great job at not talking to each other when we're sitting at the same table (which is most of the time we're both home), much less not make each other laugh.
I'm glad the British queen's funeral is over, because as much as my dark-humor-loving self enjoyed herself in the past few days, sadly the jokes got older much faster then the feelings of "what the actual fuck" when reading about things like playground being closed or even operations being cancelled "in her honor" - what, is this ancient times and they want to send more people with her into the afterlife?
Yuletide nominations are open. I'm mostly sure of two fandoms I want to request (and thus have to nominate) this year, but have very little idea of the third, and the clock is ticking. Hm.
Other things that happened in the last few weeks: more Minecraft. I made my way back to the first village, mined a bit more, and decided to find or make a shorter way between the villages because I couldn't decide which one I like better. I thought maybe I could build a base somewhere in the middle between them. But then I got distracted discovering other places – there are so many! I want to see all the things! I almost died a few times: once to powder snow (I'm always wearing leather boots now because otherwise that will definitely happen again), and once when I thought it would be fun to stay on the ocean all night and then was almost killed by drowned when I left the boat for a second. I also found some ocean ruins, but didn't explore them yet because drowning.
I eventually found a faster way between my two villages via a lake. I'm vaguely planning to make an actual nice path, but that would require work, idk. Instead I made a bigger map for more exploration.
I even dared to do some cave exploration! Pretty sure I found an entrance to a deep dark biome but I decided not to go there yet. No new diamonds found but I have quite a bit of iron and gold by now. Then I decided to try and fill in the map – turns out the way for me to explore without being so scared is simply not to carry anything I would be too sad if I lost, so not even iron armor. I found a dark forest: the mushrooms look cool, but it is also scary since the forest is so dark there are mobs out by day. So I mostly walked on top of the trees, which was cool. I did not find another village, but I did find another broken portal, at least. And I learned how to dive and found a treasure map but after I spent several days digging for the buried chest I gave up.
I came back to the first village to find out that encouraging the villagers to have kids actually worked! There was also a cat nearby so I spent a day fishing to make friends with it, and I also happened to fish out not only an enchanted bow but also a saddle, so now I can ride horses, which is cool. Unfortunately there was a pillager patrol, and I killed all of them but sadly not before they killed some of my villagers.
I went back to the second village and only found one villager, so for a moment I feared that the village would have to be abandoned, but fortunately the next day I found another one and by now the population is back to five, which is slightly more stable.
I took as much of my valuables as I could carry back to village 1 and then tamed a horse. I can travel so fast now! Very cool. Then I explored the region a bit and finally found a place to possibly build my home base: an island in a bay. (The downside is that even though I put torches all around it, some drowned zombies still try to get onto the island at night, but few enough that they are easy to deal with.) I built bridges to two sides, a cellar for the chests, the first floor with oak loag walls for my bed and crafting table and anvil etc., and the top floor with birch log and all window walls for my enchanting table. Great view. Not sure yet what I will do with the roof.
I managed to get another saddle while fishing and tamed a donkey, that was helpful while transferring my stuff to my new home. I did some more farming and exploring (so many forests and taiga and plains and mountains, still no desert or jungle or even a swamp, boo), and eventually I completed the full enchanting set-up and started enchanting my armor. (Side-note, having to go up and down in the house is a bit annoying at times, I think next time I will make a house with just one floor.) I also got enchanted diamond pants from the armorer in the nearby village, that was very convenient. I did a little more cave exploration, but never very far.
And yesterday I finally made it to the nether! I had the materials to do it for a while and today I finally decided fuck it, I will at least take a look. Going through the portal and getting the "joining world…" message is cool, really shows that this is another dimension.
First impression: there is lava right in front of me. Thankfully I had enough place to stand but expanding that platform was the first thing I did. Then I realized that I had landed in a Warped Forest, which both looks really cool and is the most peaceful nether biome, so that is very nice. Then I realized that I was on a small island in a lava lake… so I will have to do quite a bit of bridging to get anywhere. Or find another saddle and get it on one of the nearby striders, but tbh bridging seems safer. In the sense of, I successfully made a bridge to a second island and then when I tried to get to the next one I immediately fell into lava, but hey, relatively. (Fortunately I left my good armor back home but still annoying, I had just gotten a stack of that pretty warped wood.)

Yeah, they cancelled operations IN AUSTRALIA, including for people at risk of vision loss and also people in too much pain to sleep. Bear in mind that many of these operations had already been delayed 3, 6, 12, 18 months due to COVID! And that the cancellations will put extra strain on a hospital system already on the verge of collapse from COVID.
She didn't even LIVE in Australia.
The sooner we're a Republic the better.
(Personally, I would have loved to see Australia cut its ties to the monarchy after World War I, or failing that, after the sacking of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam by the Governor-General, the Queen's representative in Australia...)

Date: 2022-09-21 10:34 am (UTC)Have fun building your base! I too camped in empty houses in villages at first but then there were more villagers and for some reason they insisted on sleeping in the houses with all my chests in them.
I looked up tips for finding buried treasure and it said to look at specific chunk coordinates iirc, and I tried that but didn't find anything, so either the treasure map is very imprecise and I need to search more neighboring chunks, or the chest is buried very deep.

Date: 2022-09-24 07:36 pm (UTC)Oh man, Mr DD is obsessed with floors, doors and everything else that gets in the way of my just doing stuff. I build bungalows!
He did build a pitched roof out of cobbled deepslate using steps that looks pretty damn good though.
I really ought to put a nether portal on my to-do list but I'm currently bouncing around a badlands biome clearing out mines and getting poisoned by cave spiders. It is Good Times :D

Date: 2022-09-24 10:08 pm (UTC)Yesterday and today I planned on very boring mining, and then yesterday I stumbled upon a mineshaft with an amethyst geode and today upon a huuuge cavern. Side benefit of having been to the nether: twisting vines are useful for exploring caves! I also used them to replace all ladders in my house, and I used warped stem for one side of my house, which looks cool.

Date: 2022-10-01 07:33 pm (UTC)Ooooh, I have not found geodes yet (and still have not managed to get to the nether, though I note the hint about twisting vines). I did finish those mines though. There were like five of them. I now have more dark oak fence than I know what to do with :D

Date: 2022-10-01 08:53 pm (UTC)I also want to try using scaffolding for cave exploration, I think it might be useful to get to higher areas, I'm excited to try it out now that I finally found a jungle and got bamboo.

Date: 2022-10-08 07:34 pm (UTC)Scaffolding for cave exploration is not something I had considered before, but my current game has this massive looming cavern right underneath my house, and now I am strongly considering it!
