schneefink: Quirrel from Hollow Knight sitting on a bench (HK Quirrel on bench)
[personal profile] schneefink
I did it! I finished the game with 100% completion :D That was so good.

Day 52
More attempts at Crust King Khann in the Coral Tower. Once I accidentally entered the wrong floor and died on floor three again ^^ I got close several times but then got impatient and died.
100.5 hours

Day 53
Today's attempts started out with two losses on the fourth floor and then a quick loss to Khann, but then I finally beat him! (Still Wanderer, but I took off the pollip pouch for weavelight, reserve bind, and longclaw.) "…Our claws to crush… Our claws to rule… Our claws to save them all…" The achievement is called "Tyrant," and his journal entry says "For his stern stewardship his legions seemed utterly loyal. For less combative bugs his would have been a hard rule." I got the Encrusted Heart, which "beats deep and slow."
Then I decided to collect the last two relics, and I'd looked up where to find them. One in High Halls, past the Forum, where the last Conductor was: a rune harp with the last words of the Weavers inscribed: "Sisters, spiders, the burden is passed. These simple bugs shall bear it full. Never to cease. Never to silence. We shall die, and wait, and pray, that one may come of silken strength enough to weave us free." Aöslkd what does that mean! Weave them free – I thought they'd left, to escape? Or just free of the regret, by freeing the bugs they left to their fate?
For the other I went back to Whiteward (I finally encountered Second Sentinel on the way, too, nice), where I found perhaps the creepiest room yet: with giant metal spokes mantled with silk pointing at a machine in the center, and light butterflies trapped around. Playing the needolin, the first word was "Help," aösldk. That one I never saw again even after playing more, which made it even creepier. (I even wondered if I imagined it.) But lots of "Please… …Must we? Why… this pain? To serve… beyond shell… To devote… eternal… Please… Remember my voice… Please…" *shivers* And then in the next room, a giant pile of corpses! One of them holds a choral commandment that reads: "Bug of voice grown hoarse or shell fallen frail, you have been selected for duty most sacred. Become our light, our guise in darkness, that others worthy may climb to join the holy song." They straight up euthanized everyone who grew old for their experiments. Oof.
With that, Scrounge's collection is complete! And they are very happy and satisfied with themselves. Hornet: "If your collection pleases you, some acknowledgement of my own contribution to its growth is not undue." ^^ Scrounge says allowing Hornet to keep viewing their collection is "gratitude enough for what little you've given me," ts.
Next: Nyleth. It took me several tries, but I got her in the end. "…We are life… We are growth… What world without us?..." The Pollen heart, beating faint and fast. Two hearts in one day!
I got the quest update that I can go back to the snail shamans now because I have three hearts, buut I kind of want to beat Skarrsinger Karmelita first anyway. It'll feel weirder to do it after, when I know for sure it's not necessary.
Many attempts later, I could get to her second phase most times, but that second phase killed me quick. So I decided to try a new tactic and switched to multibind + injector band + druid's eyes, the "heal as much as you can"-build, and with that I finally beat her! "…How we hunted… How we sang… My children, I saw you glorious…" The Hunter's Heart, beating steady and strong. The journal entry for Skarrsinger Karmelita reads: "Song queen of the Skarr and their most talented warrior. This graceful ruler once possessed skill to rival my own. At her youthful peak, her voice united all Skarr in her service."
(The journal says I've encountered 218 / 234 enemies, though does "encounter" mean "strike," I assume?)
Three hearts in one day, not bad :)
Before visiting the shamans again, I went back to Bellhart and finally picked a color for my Bellhome. Red. It seemed appropriate.
Then I went to see the shamans. First they remarked upon the extra heart I had and that they could guess its source, but believed it long gone from these lands. Hornet: "The heart of a graceful lord. In its taking I was able to witness his caves and kingdom as once they flourished. A stunning sight. Unique. All gone… Lost to the pale monarch… and the system to keep her caged."
Then it's time for the ritual. It "won't be pleasant," the shamans warn, and as Hornet lies down and the ritual begins it looks excruciating. Did we actually see her mask break open?
And then! "Red Memory"! :D I hadn't seen any of this (apart from one picture of baby Hornet,) I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. The red and the heartbeat and the black strands made it feel soo, idk, tense (I'm blaming that for how often I failed some of the jumps, ahem.) And the journey! Down, sideways, down, sideways, but always down; baby Hornet with Weavers, with her mother, with queen Vespa in the Hive, then across the White Palace but notably not meeting the Pale King, and finally meeting the White Lady and getting the Everbloom. Aaahh! I was too excited to make screenshots as I often do for my notes, I'll have to watch that sequence in a LP. So good.
Hornet wakes up, the Everbloom on her lap, the empty shells of the snail shamans around her. (And they don't respond to the needolin either.)
It's almost done. Time for the last step: dive into the Void to free Pharloom.
(Next time, because it's bedtime, boo. Apart from the main quest I have two other unfulfilled quests: advanced alchemy, and Trobbio. But I'm fine with leaving those for later.)
103 hours.

ETA, watching the Red Memory in BlueSR's playthrough:
First door: baby Hornet sitting among at least six Weavers. "…Show us your craft, child… …Show it splendid, as only we can teach… …Prove yourself more Weaver than Wyrm…" And then Hornet binding Silk, and eventually the memory of the Weavers dissolves and Hornet appears as an adult again. Poor Hornet, torn between her heritages even so young. But that means there were plenty of Weavers left in Hallownest when Hornet was young, though that was a long time ago. (Iirc there was one still alive during Hollow Knight, in the Weavenest?)
Second floor down: Hallownest, the Beast's Den. Herrah! With her face blurry because Hornet can't remember it! "…Ignore them, daughter… their whispers… …Greater, grander… Weaver, guardian, queen… Those are their desires… not your own. Certainly not mine… …Only if you resist them, you might see it, another hope… beyond… …But to recall these words, in time so far… Will you even remember me, child? Could you?... …A mother… before the mask… before I lay forever in duty…"
Third floor: the Hive! So cool! And queen Vespa! Sparring with a grown-up Hornet. "…Good… Better… …Yet still you will need to be faster… …In time, they will come for you… Those who fear your nature, and those seeking to claim it… …To survive our world you must learn to sting… swift and sudden…"
Next floor: the White Palace!! Even in her memory, full of spikes. I was so curious if we would see the Pale King but instead if dissolves into the White Lady's white, and then we see Hornet in a white palace garb, kneeling in front of the White Lady whose face is in shadow. "…Alas… spider's child… …For our ways you will think us harsh… You will think us uncaring, unrepentant… …And so we must seem, for such is the cost of our wish…" Hornet, standing up and then dissolving into her current, adult appearance: "You are wrong, Lady… I knew the wish, and the price to achieve it. And now, across these many ages, I have only come to know it better… Strength… in mind, in care, in claw. Strength enough that I may live to see a world better than our own, or to craft a world as I desire. That was the wish, of my mother, of my mentor, and of you…" "…Indeed, spider… So much pain you must have passed to speak our hope so simply… For her you become… who knows clear our desire, and has seen full the darkness beneath our house, I would show you the gift…" The pale flower appears: "Witness, the first light. The only means we possess to resist that void with which our family is forever linked. Reach forth, child grown strong. Wrest it from this rememberance. Burn yourself free from our sad fate…"
Aaah!!!
Blue also thought to check the journal entries right afterwards. Like the one for the Wingmoulds: "False fly with a rune etched shell. A tortured mix of soul and void is caged within. A crude construct of my father's fallen domain. Only a fool believes that void can be fashioned to do their bidding."
And Lost Garmond: "Old knight consumed by black thread. A tragic fate for a once honourable bug. These void soaked threads… Their physical might is nothing compared to the corruption they wreak upon a soul."

Day 54
It's time for the final fight!
But before that: Time to talk to people. I talked to Shakra and Hornet told her that "the cost was grave, and the challenge steep, but I have claimed a power that can put end to this disaster." Shakra said this is good, even essential, because her own strength has near reached its limit. She also said that if Hornet can't do it, certainly no other bug could. "As you say, Shakra. I shall do what I must."
Btw, the Conjoined Heart is now a memento in my – now renovated and painted red – bellhome, and I can hear it beating when inside; I suspect if I had e.g. not beaten Karmelita and used the Conjoined Heart for the ritual instead, it would later be the Hunter's Heart as a memento.
Next: Sherma, who realizes that Hornet has a great task ahead of her and fears "that the time of our final parting draws near." Hornet confirms her task and says if it succeeds, "my future may take me far from Pharloom, but know I have faith that you will hold these bugs together, and see them prosper." Aww. "Ah! In truth, I'm still only a fool, but I'll hold dearly to your faith in me. That warmth will help me to endure whatever challenge lies ahead!" And he prays and sings for her.
Next: Forge Daughter, who helpfully tells me Ballow repaired the diving bell. Hornet tells her too that she has acquired a power that will enable her to end this black madness and save this land. "Excellent, pointy bug. Your drive, and your vigour, both have proven surprisingly large for one so small."
After that I wanted to visit all the other friendly NPCs to see what they'd say. No new dialogue with Creige, but thanks to a hint I saw online I walked further in Greymoor and found Seth! Sitting where Shakra camped. "Sir Guardian… I scarcely thought we would meet again after our encounter." Seth (no more Guardian in his name): "Hm? Apologies friend, I fear I don't recognize you. And I'm sure I would remember such a striking figure!" "…Pay no heed, sir. It seems I mistook you for another. You are… a traveller through these quaking lands, I take it?" "I suppose I am indeed! I was born into this world not long ago, waking beside a lake with only this weapon laying beside me. Seth is my name, though I know not who gave it to me. The custom of the newly-born is to explore the world, is it not? So that is what I have set out to do! I will rest here a moment, then continue my journey." And he says he wishes understood the language of the craws who love to swoop and play. When Hornet plays the needolin, he thinks about being "fateless and free/fresh shell… clear sight…" I wish him all the best :)
I looked for Pinstress next, but she was neither at Mount Fay nor at her home, and not at the Seamstress' hut either, and the Seamstress didn't have any new dialogue either. Neither did Flick, or Pavo. (And I don't want to search Hunter's March and the Far Fields for Gilly.)
So: to the Abyss! Ballow repaired the diving bell and I can use it to return now, too, very convenient. Through the Abyss, to the bench, to the edge of the void… "Child, I hold the means to descend. Let us meet one final time, and quell this black ruin of our making."
Lace is here again! "Who are you hoping you'll find down there, spider? An ailing child and a Silk starved beast? If so, I'm afraid we may sorely disappoint. What waits below is me no longer." "Even if only your shadow remains, to release your mother's grip my blade would see it slain." "Then why hold, even this moment? Surely terror hasn't suddenly claimed your hardened heart? Take the final plunge, spider. Join us in my drowning palace, and let oblivion swallow us all." "Oblivion may take you, child. My own life, I shall not sacrifice. I have survived the fury of your land. I have borne its barbs and its blades, and I have seen wonder behind its dangers. But always, child, I remain a daughter of Hallownest. And the void below all things, that darkness I will fear no longer…" Lace fades.
Hornet dives into the Void.
The whole scene of her diving down, the void tendrils grasping at her but the flower warding them off, but the flower starting to fray at the edges, is so cool and tense! She finally reaches what looks like a massive ball of void/silk-threads and inside finds a very badly looking Grand Mother Silk apparently strung up – and then a void-black Lace rises up from the ground. Lost Lace! The final boss.
I had Wanderer and still the max-healing trinkets from the Karmelita fight, and I got very lucky in my first attempt and immediately made it to her second phase. I managed that one more time in the next few attempts, and then decided to take a break. Then back to it. Fun fight! Difficult, though. But I'm learning!
Many attempts later: ah. I knew there had to be a phase 3. xD
104 hours.

Day 55
More practice. I almost always make it to her second phase now, but haven't made it to phase 3 again.
104.5 hours.

Day 56
I'm improving! If "GMS falls down and the void becomes much more active" is the start of the third phase, then maybe "the ~light star circles appear" is the start of the fourth? I got there once :)
And after that only one more time to phase 3. But I almost got through her first phase hitless a few times. (Other times I died in her first phase.)
I tried out what happens when jumping in the void without diving down: the void is calmed, but nothing else happens.
105.5 hours.

Day 57
After a break of around a week for personal reasons (& the start of Hermitcraft s11 didn't help tbh) it took me almost half an hour to get to phase 3 again but I'm getting back into it. After a while I started getting to phase 3 about every second attempt or so, pretty good! And even to the next phase twice.
107 hours.

Day 58
I did it!!! I beat Lost Lace! :D Eeee I'm so giddy.
I used Wanderer's Crest with injector band, multi-bind, druid's eyes, magnetite dice, weighted belt, and in the last phase I also used a couple of cogflies but I think they barely hit.
Every time Lace staggered the void receded more after she fell the last time the Void receded fully! And Hornet (first played the needolin jic, and then) picked her up and looked at GMS and GMS gave her Silk for Hornet to super-jump out of the Void and rescue her! But the Everbloom faded! But just when Hornet started to lose consciousness the Knight appeared with all their Void siblings, and the Knight/Shade Lord carried Hornet and Lace out of the Void! And the Void strings faded!! Aaah what an ending :D
The achievement is called Sister of the Void - siblings!
I got to see the Herald shoot across the sky too :D
And it said To Be Continued!! I thought people were only idly wondering about a game three but no there's a reason! :D
Almost 108 hours. What a game. Wow.

A new menu screen, with the needle and the pin next to each other :)
I beat it with 100% but there's still things I haven't done yet: I know about the Advanced Alchemy quest, Tormented Trobbio, and the Crawfather, at least. And I only have two of eight mementos: it'll take a while yet if I want to get all of those, I'd have to complete the Hunter's Journal etc. Not sure if I'll bother doing that.
But in the meantime I can finally look at fandom things without worrying about main spoiler stories, really looking forward to that.

I don't know anything about this game but every image and piece of art I've seen on tumblr looks both stunning and fascinating. I don't play videogames for ~reasons but this one is very tempting! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I need to get back to my game, I've had a very anxious week and haven't even booted up my PS4, but I left off at Lost Lace. I want to finish the game!

I love the clawline, it's so good for so many things. Would never have beaten First Sinner without it. I've really enjoyed my fights with Lace before, they're like a choreographed ballet in a way and they're fun! So I'm optimistic I'll be able to beat her in however many tries (hey, it took me 117 to beat the Radiance, I find these games fun enough not to give up).
