Yesterday was MCC 27, aka MCC Underdogs, and the third anniversary of MCC. My fifth time watching MCC live and my third time watching winner's PoV! Yellow 24, Purple/Violet 26 and now Purple 27. (Of the other two teams, Red 23 made it to DB, and Pink 25 came last.) Not completely a coincidence since I chose the teams for #24 and #27 at least in part because I expected them to do well and wanted to watch one of the best players, but still, pretty cool.
That was a great team to watch. They all seem like cool people and they'd clearly practiced together, they were comfortable with each other and were so encouraging and supportive and had a great time. They were aware that people expected them to do well but didn't let the expectations weigh them down too much - though it surely helped that they did very well in the first few games. And FBM did mention his hands were shaking and Impulse said he almost threw up a few times.
(A detail I appreciated: the small icons at the top left of FBM's screen showing who was talking.)
Starting out with TGTTOSAWAF and Terra Swoop Force for the adrenaline rush, perfect. Impulse got second place right out of the gate, definitely set a good tone. (Phil was definitely not salty that this map was played in an event he can't play in ^^) TGTTOS also nicely showcased FireBreathMan being cracked at the game, and that the others are very good too.
(Sidenote, Impulse and BDubs, who are in their 40s, aren't actually the two oldest MCC participants ever, that was VoiceOverPete who was 60, but they are the oldest winners.)
Purple quickly rallied in BattleBox and won that one, and then Ace Race too. Ace Race was so close! Foolish got second by a literal second, and Ranboo was close behind. (I would have been happy for Ranboo to get that win tbh, since I was sure his team had bad odds of making it to DB.)
Grid Runners was fun too, I enjoy it more now that I know the game a bit better.
The elevator joke was great, every team had its small dog under the arena *g* Purple Pomeranians, Blue Beagles, Aqua Alsatians, Green Greyhounds, Golden Retrievers, I didn't catch the others.
And then came Meltdown and Cyan absolutely dominated, holy shit. I didn't know any of them before but apparently they're all mostly Valorant/Apex Legends/etc. players. I watched Meltdown from Timmy's PoV afterwards and he quickly watched the video explaining the game during the break xD Only to conclude that it's basically freeze tag. Not a surprise that people who are used to team combat in tight quarters would do well in Meltdown, but to that degree, whoa. Cyan got lucky there, if e.g. Buildmart had been played instead of Meltdown they never would have made it into DB, but they did do well in other games too.
Then HitW and Parkour Tag, and then Sands of Time! Finally played again after a pause of two events, and it's the last game again. Purple ended up doing so well but man that was close! BDubs was not a great sandkeeper, but to be fair that's hard at one's first event. Several of the other teams apparently did very badly... I've never watched Hbomb's SoT VoD reviews before but this time I kinda look forward to them ^^
Cyan was definitely the hardest team for them to face in DB. (I was hoping it'd be Red, they only missed by a hundred points or so.) But they pulled it off! I was very happy Purple won, not only because they were a great team with cool people but also because I was glad that a team won where all members actually care about Minecraft and MCC a lot. I mean Cyan also did sound really invested and cared about the event but they're not primarily Minecraft players. Blushi's 1v1s were so intense but she made it.
It was also funny that in MCC Underdogs, which should be a great chance to win for people who have played in the past but never won, of the eight people in DB seven were newcomers, and the eighth person won MCC Rising before and isn't even going to get a new coin for this win.
It's always so fun watching people celebrate after a win :) Before the event and after the win FBM played hype songs and sang along (badly but with enthusiasm), made me smile. And tributes paid to Techno, of course. (So many people were mentioning Techno in FBM's chat - not surprising since most people probably first heard about him via Techno, MCM or later, but it could kinda look like they weren't there for FBM himself and I hope that didn't bother him.)
FBM got first individual by 900 points, nice. (Didn't break 4k as some predicted but that always also depends on which games etc.) Blushi got 6th, Impulse 15th, and BDubs 24, very nice.
I was happy for Ranboo that he got 4th, which I thought was probably his best result individual so far, but then I saw that he got fourth in MCC 19 too, impressive. (He was on a team with Dream in MCC 19 and got more points than him? I might have to watch that PoV.) Ranboo did an overly dramatic loser's speech after the event xD His 14th loss and he's never even been to DB, but his teams got 3rd four times and 4th three times. Fingers crossed he'll get a good team next time.
Bonus: LB had to listen to me go on about Minecraft-related things including MCC for months now, but yesterday he mentioned being bored at home with no brain, sooo I mentioned it was MCC and he actually ended up watching parts of it :D We only talked for a bit, and yeah admittedly SoT is hard to follow when one doesn't know what's going on and DB does have a big luck element (though, like Poker, you know it's not only luck because some people are so clearly better at it than others.) He didn't love it, but now at least he knows a bit more what I'm talking about.
Today is also Tommy and Tubbo's last DSMP lore stream (for this season), I'm excited. The first three parts were very dramatic and I bet the ending will be even more so. Part three ended only about twenty minutes before MCC began, that was a mood whiplash ^^

Date: 2022-12-03 12:00 pm (UTC)For MCC 28, it'd be really nice if Pearl could finally get a win.
I was hoping that the earlier-than-expected date would mean you'd be able to watch this one live again :) I'll be watching Pink - I might miss the very beginning because of a family thing but I should be able to catch most of it.
