I had enough of the Deep Dark for a bit, so I traded some more until I had a stack of emerald blocks in my ender chest (and more at home), practiced flying in F5 a bit for my next visit to the End, and then went exploring. TIL a map doesn't fill out areas you only fly over, annoying. I finally found a new biome, a frozen ocean with polar bears. I got a stack of packed ice and blue ice each, and I found a ship wreck stuck in the ice, that looked cool. Other finds from this exploration tour included two new villages, another buried treasure, more crying obsidian from a broken portal (I now have enough to make a respawn anchor), and mangrove propagules from a wandering trader, finally.
I watched Pixlriffs' video on mangrove swamps and found out that I can make mud by splashing a water bottle on dirt! Seems so logical yet had never occurred to me. (To be fair, splashing a water bucket on dirt does nothing, and I didn't even know mud blocks existed.) I made a couple of mud blocks and planted a mangrove tree on top. It grew very big! Nice. I need to plant it further away from other trees next time. It's on a small island connected by bridge to my base's main island and I want to have all kinds of trees there. Come to think of it, I also forgot acacia trees and azalea, I need to fix that. And nether trees, if I decide I want to include them. I probably need to make the island bigger, and also decide what to put where… designing things is hard.
(Btw Pixlriffs has a Nether portal inside a fake amethyst geode and it looks great, I want that in my next world.)
From one of Phil's Origins SMP streams I learned that I can make lava dripstones! Which is an infinite lava source, if a very slow one. I built two in my basement, I was also reminded that I can use lava buckets as fuel for furnaces and then I won't need as much charcoal. Though it only really makes sense if I smelt a lot at a time. Would be easier with chests filling the furnaces via hoppers, but then I'd have to put furnaces somewhere else because it wouldn't look good where they are now. Hm. Probably not worth it.
I figured out how to grow azalea trees and now I have flowering azalea leaves as decoration around my house, it looks nice. And I realized that farming kelp next to my base might be a good idea, it grows so fast and I get xp from smelting it and can then trade it to a butcher. Setting up a furnace with chests and hoppers might be worth it just for this, I'll have to find a spot for it.
I did some more cave exploration underneath my base (I found gold and diamonds etc., but not the dungeon I was half hoping for) and some more trading. The village nearby finally has a master shepherd that I bought paintings from – only afterwards did it occur to me to check and turns out crafting paintings is actually really easy, but I'm supporting the local economy by buying them from an artist *nods* I immediately hung up several of them all over the base: a giant skull in the basement and another one in the main "living room" area, fake windows in the basement, a hand over fire in the main room… Looks nice already, but I'll do a bit more experimenting later. Maybe if I want more paintings next time I'll nurture my own artistic talent and make them myself ^^
I decided to go to the End and get a spare elytra because exploring the End is much easier when you can fly from island to island. Well, in theory. In practice I'm so scared of the void and especially with pumpkin head + F5 that I tried to walk wherever I could and only used the elytra once. Even when I found a second city with a ship I climbed the towers and then bridged over to the ship. It'll probably be easier when I have more practice flying. Though otoh now that I have a second pair of wings I don't think I'll go back to the End anytime soon. I barely bothered looking through the new city for loot either, I just wanted to get back. I got enough shells for five more shulker boxes which I think will be enough to last me for a good while. I also got the dragon head from the ship this time - no idea what I could do with it but it's cool.
I looked up a short tutorial on hoppers (specifically how to place them – I keep forgetting that interactions can change if you sneak while doing things) and managed to build a semi-automatic kelp smelter near my base, nice. I haven't tried out how much xp I'll get from it and it's not a very efficient trading item but still. I had only barely enough lava buckets so I doubled my number of lava dripstones, and shortly afterwards I decided to build a second semi-automated furnace so then clearly I had to build two more lava dripstones. Have I mentioned that lava dripstones are cool? I might build some more just for fun.
I watched a tutorial on maps and now I want to make a giant map, I just haven't decided yet in what resolution or where to put it. Can't put it on a wall in my base because the few walls that aren't full of windows now have paintings on them and/or aren't big enough, so I'm thinking of building something nearby specifically for the map. Maybe smoothen a part of the nearby cliffside and just put a roof above it?
Then I did some more enchanting to get rid of my levels before I go back to the Deep Dark again. I'm planning to do some expeditions with only carpet&torches&hoe where I expect to die a lot, but progress will be made! Tune in next time xD
…unless I get distracted playing on a different server, because DD is returning home tomorrow! \o/ It's been weeks, I hate it when she's gone for that long.
