New phone (and I still know who dis)

Another success in the category of things I have been procrastinating on for many months: I finally have a new phone! I got the phone over a week ago but today I finally started using it. I managed to transfer my contacts, which was the most important part, and my apps (not yet all past conversations on various messaging apps but I'll look into that eventually.) It's exciting! My old phone was, hm, almost ten years old?, and was out of storage space and couldn't connect to wi-fi etc., and now I can finally install new apps and take more pictures and use wi-fi and bluetooth again, all that fun stuff.

The only disadvantage (that is not only related to having to get used to things looking different) so far is that the new phone is significantly larger and heavier than the old one. I bought one of those grip button things, with a turtle on it, but I don't think I put it in a good spot because after a few minutes holding it like that didn't feel comfortable, I'll probably need to figure out how to change that.

Feels good to finally cross this off the list. Having a deadline (before the upcoming vacation so I can take many pictures) definitely helped.

Congrats! Migrating messages when your old phone was that old sounds like a challenge - hope you can figure it out. Weirdly enough, every messenger does it differently. I have experience with many, feel free to lmk if there's a specific problem, maybe I've run into it as well.

Thanks! I might take you up on that when I get around to taking a closer look. So far the chat history transfer on Telegram worked with no problems, Signal didn't work because my old phone doesn't have working wi-fi and I'm not sure if there's even a chance anymore to transfer those, Whatsapp didn't work yet but I'm reasonably confident that I can figure out how to do it, and I don't think I can get old SMS or at least I haven't even checked yet.
Right now my main complaint is that I'm apparently unable to delete emails in the default gmail app, very annoying *sighs*

Yes, wi-fi dependent chat log transfer is standard for Signal, sadly. The Signal support page does seem to offer a workaround, though: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007059752-Backup-and-Restore-Messages (search for: How do I restore from a backup file?)
I managed to do a transfer of WhatsApp chat data without using the (wi-fi dependent) backup once by hooking up both phones to my computer via USB and transferring the data directly (copying over the relevant folders).

May I recommend K9-Mail as an e-mail app with no frills?

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately it says doesn't support most (whatever that means) free Hotmail accounts and I still have one of those I use regularly, but then set-up seems to have worked?, I will have to keep an eye on it.

The reason I'm not upgrading my phone is precisely because I bought a smaller form one which I really like and anything I could upgrade to would be larger and heavier and...no.

Exactly, and as long as there's no pressing reason to switch, better not. Fingers crossed yours keeps working for a long time.
