Some FIAB fic recs (in addition to my gifts):
Ghost Talker by
juliana677 (Original Work)
1k, gen, superhero with powers better suited for a villain
Summary: Daily Entries in the diary of a necromancer superhero.
Why I like it: Cool concept and great job fleshing out the characters through diary entries.
Feedback for NFG Conference 2023 by
Nemainofthewater (Guardian)
1.2k, gen, outsider POV
Summary: Dear Professor Zhou,
[...]
I was hoping you’d do me an additional favour and pass on this email to Shen Wei – he asked the attendees to send in any feedback at the last breakfast session, but understandably forgot to hand out or collect the feedback forms before the end of the conference. I tried contacting him directly, but I kept getting error messages informing me that my email had bounced. It’s nice to see that IT issues transcend individual universities!
[...]
Do PhD graduates at Dragon City university get swords??? That’s unfair; is it too late to switch universities? I want a sword as well!
Why I like it: Very funny and well done.
equal footing by
waveridden (Star Wars Original Trilogy)
3k, gen, missing scenes
Summary Lando was the first person Luke met with one hand. Even then, preoccupied by being prepped for surgery, Luke noticed that he looked ashen and guilty. They spent a year planning to infiltrate Jabba’s palace, trying and failing plans. Lando was committed, and helpful, and Leia forgave him.
None of this was enough to make Luke like Lando Calrissian.
Why I like it: This is a great between-movies look at Luke & Lando and their relationship.
Jimmy Solidarity and the Pantry of Self-Discovery by
whatcaniwriteinthis (Life Series SMP)
1.3k, college AU
Summary: FOUND: a sticky note. on one side, a list titled "Reasons I'm Straight". on the other, "Guys I've ??? Liked?"
Why I like it: Oh Jimmy *facepalm* Sweet and funny.
You Came to Me With Flowers by
Alice_not_Alice (Life Series SMP)
Scar & Grian, song lyrics
Summary: “I’m so sorry I killed you but I had to, it was part of the moment. You understand the moment. It’s crazy, things happen.”
- Scar
And Grian does.
Why I like it: These two! I really like the lyrics and the rhythm and I can imagine different kinds of music to go with it.
(Not) Too Late to Fix the Ending by
Valiant_Effort (Naruto)
2.1k, gen, time travel
Summary: It's not the first time that someone's tried to kidnap Sakura to get her to heal someone else. Nor is it the second.
It is the first time anyone's succeeded.
It's also the first time she's been asked to heal a dead guy.
Why I like it: Poor Sakura xD This is funny.
Dreamed to finally say such things, then only to pretend by
isevsianne (Original Work)
2.5k, OMC/OMC, advice column
Summary: An online advice columnist gets a very regular letter about two straight guys who are just playing a game.
Why I like it: Very regular letter, yesyes. Very funny.
reflect / refract / diffract by
waveridden (The Hunger Games)
9k, gen, canon divergence
Summary: After winning the 73rd Hunger Games, Katniss gets her first tribute to mentor.
Why I like it: This is fittingly brutal, and I mean that in the best way, especially considering the fandom.
Hic Sunt Leones: A Brothers’ Guide to Life, Love, and and the Latvian Long-Snout by
decemberista (Harry Potter)
3k, Percy&Charlie&Bill Weasley with background Percy/Oliver, epistolary
Summary: Percy doesn’t know how to do romance, Bill thinks he can help – and Charlie’s just enjoying the ride.
A series of letters between the older Weasley brothers, set after the Second Wizarding War.
Why I like it: I enjoy a good epistolary fic, and these letters are a great mix of hilarious and earnest.
Twenty Hours in St. Mungo's by
avocadomoon (Harry Potter)
74.6k, Hermione/Sirius, time travel
Summary: Hermione Granger appeared on the doorstep of number 12 Grimmauld Place on a Thursday morning, six months after she'd gone missing, with her hair cut short to her chin and a wound in her shoulder that looked like the result of a burning curse, half-cauterised and bleeding sluggishly. She was wearing a long skirt and jumper that nobody recognized, and she had cuts and scratches on her legs, as if she'd been running through a briar patch. There was a series of numbers on her left palm written in ballpoint pen - too long to be an address, but too short for a phone number - and her ears were pierced, which was notable only because (according to Ginny) they hadn't been, before. She was also five months pregnant.
Why I like it: I particularly liked how well this portrayed the dilemma of a time traveler: she doesn't know the consequences of her actions, she wants to save people, but at the same time she knows that because of things she changed some people will probably have much worse fates in the new timeline. And the outcome is as positive as she could have hoped for, but that doesn't mean that there's not still difficult parts of coming to terms with the changes and what it all means.
I really like the reading lists from
fic_in_a_box_mod, I found several nice stories I otherwise would not have.
And with this I reached my goal of making at least one rec post each month this year! \o/
