Things I did on my Minecraft server: more exploration! This time with the goal to get a sniffer egg. I made my way all the way back west where I'd discovered the desert and mesa and the coral reefs around it. I found a warm ocean ruin almost immediately, but sadly it had very little suspicious sand and I only found one pottery sherd.

Shortly afterwards I found another pillager outpost, and this one had allays in cages! So I decided to risk trying to conquer it and it was a lot easier than I expected in the end, fewer pillagers than expected. I found my first goat horn, "Sing." I decided to leave the allays in the cages for now, but when I found one just flying around nearby I gave it a block of dirt so it would follow. The chiming is cute. Not too long afterwards however I felt a bit bad because I was dragging it around when I didn't even need it for anything, and maybe it was hanging out near its captured friends on purpose?, so I let it go.

I still couldn't bring myself to break any of the coral blocks. The reef is so pretty and I don't know what I would do with it rn anyway. So I just looked for more warm ocean ruins nearby (I found one but again with very little suspicious sand and no sniffer egg) and then decided to fill out a nearby unfinished map, which happened to be the one where I found my first trail ruin. I visited it again and man I did a much better job excavating the second one. Now to be fair this one was tricky because it is below the waterline right next to a river so I kept having to block water, which was annoying. But I still could have done a better job exposing the different structures. So I did a little more of that, and cleared the nearby jungle area more too. It's nowhere near fully exposed yet but I got bored and started to make my way back, though I was quickly distracted by a cluster of warm ocean underwater ruins again. No luck again: no sniffer egg and only one pottery sherd.

I decided to fill out a few more maps on my way back and found another couple of warm ocean ruins close together. And this time I got five (!!) sniffer eggs! And several pottery sherds on top of that! So my exploration mission was a full success. I got home and put the new maps on the map wall and it's looking very nice already. I also hatched one of the sniffer eggs, the baby sniffer looks very cute.

I filled in one corner of a map near my base I had previously overlooked and saw an ocean monument on the way – and for the first time I decided to take one on! Inspired by a Pixlriffs video I decided to go the sneaky assassin route: invis potion, water breathing, only boots and a sword, going after the elder guardians first. It worked great at first! The guardians ignored me, I killed the first Elder Guardian with no problems. Aaand then I got lost ^^ the ocean monument hallways all look the same on the inside. I found and killed the second Elder Guardian too, but then I was just glad I found my way out again before my potions ran out. I had to come back with more potions to kill the third: this time I took some sea pickles with me to mark my way, that came in handy. I got some prismarine and some sponge, nice, and I can easily get more now whenever I want. I also activated a conduit with the prismarine, close to my base, just for fun. (Not sure how one would figure that out in-game without looking it up...)

Then: another exploration tour, filling out more maps while making my way back to the spot I'm contemplating building my main base at to do more scouting there. I came across a mountain on the way and briefly decided to check if I could find an Ancient City underneath. I'm pretty sure there isn't one, but I didn't finish checking for sure because I ran out of night vision potion and it turns out once you get used to having night vision losing it is annoying. I also found another pillager outpost and this time the only problem I had was that when I recently switched my Infinity bow for a Mending one I forgot to bring enough arrows; thankfully I could easily fix that when I got to the next village. I found another horn and more allays in that outpost, and another horn in the next one (the one where I recently died while trying to land on top of it.)

I made my way back to the spot where I considered building my new base (with a quick detour to do some more excavation around my second trail ruin), but upon further review it doesn't seem convenient for building at all: not much flat space, too many canyons. I went a little further and found a space that might work, a flat hill with a fantastic view and I could build bridges etc. to nearby hills, but I'll have to think a bit more about if it's large/convenient enough. I'm no longer even sure if I want one big base or several buildings close together.

In the meantime I decided to look for a stronghold nearby, both out of interest and to see if I could find the armor trim there. That took me a while because at first I didn't do it very methodically. Also it turned out to be under a dark oak forest which is not great to navigate in. [At this point I took a break for a little while to play Vampire Survivor, and other distractions.] Unfortunately I lost several ender eyes, and not even all to breaking, two of them I just couldn't find again before they despawned (in hindsight one of them must have been right under the tree I threw it from) and only then did I finally find the motivation to just chop down all the trees in that general area (thankfully narrowed down a lot by that point.) Finally I found the right spot, and shortly afterwards the stronghold. A big one! With two libraries, one of them a large one. I found four Eye armor trim templates, which is nice for the collection. I also found the end portal, and I had just enough ender pearls and blaze powder left to open it. End portals look so cool! I didn't go through though and instead I went up to the surface again (which was harder than it sounds because on my way back I got lost in the stronghold for quite a while.)

I'm not sure what I want to do next: actually go to the End because I would love to have more shulker boxes, or do more exploration near the area I might want to build a base in, or maybe go to the Nether for the first time in ages and look for netherite for lodestones and maybe look for a bastion because I would love to find the pigstep disc eventually…
Also I will definitely manage to take a nice screenshot of my character in front of something cool to use as an icon before my next post, mhm, for sure.

It has been a few weeks since DD and I played on SMPOfOurOwn, but we have been excavating a trail ruin together, which is a lot of fun. We're not sure what/if we want to do anything with it when we're done, but we've only just discovered all the buildings and there's still plenty of work to do to put them out in the open.
