Back in 2017 I made advent calendar recs for DD and I have thought about doing them again since but never really found the right incentive, and especially recently because most of what I read is MCYT, a fandom few people here are into.
Then I got the idea to do it on Tumblr instead since the MCYT fandom there is a lot bigger, and I enjoyed that a lot. Sometimes I could even tag the author of a fic directly, that was nice too.
I slightly underestimated how much effort it took. Fortunately I could copy many recs I'd made here before, that made it easier. The others I'll now copy over here.
Complete list on Tumblr
For the fics I have recced here before I will just link back to those recs.
1: THE DIVORCE OF THE CENTURY by
glossyblue (Hermitcraft)
7k, Grian/Scar, comedy, partially in transcript format
Summary: The court proceedings of Hermitcraft’s first ever divorce, centering on Grian (Petitioner #1), Scar (Petitioner #2), Mumbo Jumbo (defense lawyer), a cat (also somehow a defense lawyer?), several judges since they keep quitting because of all the nonsense, and your tireless Court Scribe JoeHills.
Why I love it: Absolutely hilarious, as in, one of the funniest fics I've ever read. Fantastic shenanigans, great character voices, wonderfully assigned ensemble cast, perfect ending.
2: somewhere a clock is ticking
3: and if you need a tourniquet by
Odaigahara (Hermitcraft)
2.9k, Grian&Mumbo, season 8, angst
Summary: “Stop telling the universe I’m dead!” Grian shouted, and lightning shot through Mumbo’s brain, juddering between his ribs like a high-voltage traveling arc and grounding in his molars. He choked, muscles convulsing, skin feeling– feeling tight, and thin and not really there, and then the sensation passed and he could move again, enough to push himself upright.
His hooves had split into hard, keratinous fingers. He stared at them, ears ringing, and Grian said, sounding like he spoke through gritted teeth, “I’m not dead. I’m going to respawn, because this isn’t the weirdest thing that’s happened to us and it’s all going according to plan. Repeat that after me, please."
Mumbo sniffled and said obediently, “This is all going exactly as I planned."
Why I love it: Remember when Mumbo was a shapeshifter in season 8 and he juiced Grian to steal his soul so he could turn human again? Crazy, right? What if it went wrong. This is fantastic h/c with delicious angst, excellent character voices, and very intriguing worldbuilding too.
4: special delivery
5: the dark is singing songs
6: Tangotek Evil Incorporated
7: make hope from every small disaster
8: a rare talent indeed

OR: A mystery on Hermitcraft told through audio logs.
Why I love it: A rare WIP rec from me but it had just updated that day after a longer break and I was excited. I don't know how far along in the story we are, but even in its current state it's very satisfying, full of dimension travel and cosmis horror and mysteries and angst and holding on amid the horrors. The audio logs are so well done.
11: Etho in the Kitchen at a Party
12: Three Black Crows
13: tall enough to reach the branches
14: A Farewell to Rusty
15: Pitfalls
16: Season 1: The Strange Card by
zoewinter1 (Life Series)
12.3k, gen, Jimmy-centric shonen TCG AU
Summary: Jimmy gave up his dreams of going pro in TCG a long time ago, but the universe has different plans for him when a mysterious card ends up in his possession. Between strange card shop owners and over the top pursuers, Jimmy’s life is about to change. For the better, or for the worse?
Why I like it: Silly but not crack, a shounen training arc, the power of friendship and believing in yourself. The AU in which the Hermits are ~spirits in cards that are summoned to fight battle with is fun, and the accompanying art is great. I suspect I might recognize some additional similarities if I'd ever been into Yu-Gi-Oh but even so this felt very familiar.
17: Dead Hometowns and Undead Machines
18: Where You Go, I Will Go (And Where You Stay, I Will Stay
19: dramaturgy by
wormcity (Hermitcraft)
166k, gen, canon-divergent AU
Summary: My Grian was sorry too, reads the note pinched between Grian’s fingers. His skin feels cold under Grumbot’s acid-green glow. What exactly does that say, he wonders, about the other timeline? What did Grumbot do?
What did he do?
Or: in another universe, Mumbo wins the mayoral race, Scar founds the world’s least underground resistance, Grian vanishes mysteriously, and in search of her missing friend, PearlescentMoon logs into a season 7 that never ended.
Why I love it: I wanted to reread this as a whole before I recced this but then I realized that if I wait for that I might not get around to including it at all and that would be worse because this is so good. Canon divergence sort-of-outsider PoV [spoiler] in the best way. With evil Grumbot! I especially like the way conflict is handled here, with people on different sides that still care about each other so much but at some point forgot to stop and think and now they're too far into the bit and it all went terribly wrong.
20: ethos exciting ninja vacation
21: Elsewhere University AU by Anonymous (Hermitcraft/Life Series)
27k, series WIP, Scar/Grian + ensemble, fae university AU
Summary of one of the stories: Scar is the kind of person who's drawn to trouble. His friends will laugh and worry about him, but trouble is where he thrives! Life wouldn't be interesting without it.
He fits into Elsewhere University just fine. His silver tongue and quick wit keep him safe as can be. He meddles with magic and strange things; he goes so far as to choose a major that's not even spoken of (for its own students' protection). And then he meets Grian.
Grian is trouble, and Scar - always and inevitably - decides this is the kind of trouble he lives for.
Why I like it: Very fun worldbuilding with the fae university, poor Xisuma trying to keep his Hermits out of trouble despite plenty of shenanigans, soft Scarian, and an unprepared Mumbo stumbling into it all. I really enjoyed the ~atmosphere. (The series was sadly not updated in a year but there are 7 completed stories.)
22: this is about a stuffed bird
23: The Dollhouse by
MawoftheMagnetar (Dream SMP/Hermitcraft)
51k, gen, crossover, eldritch horror
Summary: Fleeing from a situation that is rapidly turning foul, Tommy throws caution to the wind and flings himself through the jaws of the void.
Crash-landing in season 9 of Hermitcraft, he finds himself in a brave new world full of strange and inscrutable people, who might be able to help him. But the Hermits have their secrets, and Tommy’s not going to lie back and let them fester.
And in his path to find justice and unspool the web of lies, Tommy may end up destroying the game for everyone…
(An atypical take on Hermit Tommy…)
Why I like it: An atypical take on Tommy crashlanding on Hermitcraft and an atypical take on eldritch Hermits and I enjoyed both of them a lot.
24: It Spreads (Comic) by
Foxxology (Hermitcraft)
9 multi-page chapters, gen, body horror
Summary: Grian played with forces he didn’t understand and must deal with the consequences of a missing king.
Why I love it: A comic with great art and writing. I love the worldbuilding with the sculk and code and chat etc., the sparing and very effective use of color, the compositions, the ensemble cast, and the story.
I also signed up to rec Life Series art for
fanart_recs in the last month of assigned fandoms before it switches to open posting in 2025. Copying those here too:
Untitled fanart of Green and Red Wild Life Scar by
luminousslime
digital art, SFW, Scar
Why I love it:
ink_ghoul made fantastic skins for Scar on his green and red life during Wild Life, and this piece depicts and contrasts them both so very well, I love how it shows his two sides. One of my favorite details is that green Scar has two cats by his side, presumably Katy Bee and Mr Finnegan, while red Scar has Evil Jellie.
And the winner is...! by
calocreek
digital art, SFW, the immortal killer snails
Why I love it: A small snail looking at an absolutely gorgeous huge stained glass piece of the immortal murder snails for each of the Life series winners. The colors are stunning and the details and symbolism are fantastic. (Joel's snail has a snail ~car!)
The DnD party from Wild Life episode 1 by
artbysconnor
digital art, SFW, D&D AU, character designs
Why I like it: Fantastic designs for these four as a D&D party. The artist expanded on their choices in the notes and they all fit so well, I love all the details and the way they fit together so well in the composition.
MAKE IT WILD!! by
syneester
digital art, SFW, winner portrait
Why I love it: I love how suitably dramatic this is with the lightning and the pose and the accessories and the crown and the wind, and Jupiter in the background. The colors fit very well too.
Additionally I also did FIAB recs in December, the last of my regular once monthly rec posts, so overall I'm very happy with myself for how many recs I did in 2024, and December in particular. Fingers crossed I'll be able to keep it up in 2025!
