Movies: Superman, Kpop Demon Hunters

I mostly went to the cinema to watch Superman today because I wanted to feel like I did anything, but I did have a good time.
I'm so out of ~practice watching superhero movies, I kept getting distracted by logic. But other than that I did enjoy the superhero parts, and the Superman parts. (The romance I was neutral on.)
This is another movie where the villain had a good point somewhere in there originally but left "reasonable" behind several thousand miles ago. Yes having extremely powerful metahumans/aliens that can interfere in any conflict they like apparently without any oversight is very concerning (no matter how "human" they feel) but, uh. Excellent job making this Luthor both very evil and very scary.
(I didn't like Krypto. As a "character" he was fun but I really dislike badly trained exuberant dogs and one with superpowers is so much worse.)

A few weeks ago I organized a movie night with friends to watch Kpop Demon Hunters because I'd heard so much about it and that was a great decision. Here I didn't get distracted by logic once ^^ It was just a fun time. And the songs are very catchy, too. I've already sung one at karaoke (This is what it sounds like) and tried two of them in Beat Saber (Golden was very difficult, Soda Pop on easy was indeed easy.)
I only took a brief look at fandom/fanfic but I'm not feeling that fannish about it. (I was surprised that the common assumption seems to be

spoilers

that Rumi's mother had a secret love affair with a demon - I think it might even be word of god canon - while my first thought was that she was probably raped. Fandom is also very hard on Celine, which on the one hand I understand but she was also in a super shitty position.)

I think the guy who did all the Kpop Demon Hunters concept art posted some drawings of Rumi's mom + demon lover + bb Rumi that were very cute and non-rapey, so everyone's dying on that hill forever.

Poor Celine.

Yeah, that would do it. I understand the urge/temptation especially given that bonus art but in canon it's very much open to interpretation.

Interesting to hear a more balanced take on Superman. I'm curious but I don't know if I'll get around to going to the cinema any time soon.

Maybe I also had too high expectations after hearing so many good things about it: it was good, but not as good as I'd hoped, idk. But I had fun, and I don't regret going, and I'm considering going to watch the Fantastic Four movie too :)

That's what I've found lately: when people rave about a superhero movie, it's usually good, but not great. It never quite lives up to the hype.

Yeah. (Usually the problem with hype in general tbf, few things live up to it. And yet I never learn apparently ^^ )

I don't have Netflix and haven't seen any free-watch options, so all I've seen of KPDH are the videos on YouTube, which gives me at least the outlines of the plot. (I'm still very impressed by what I've seen!) I too had wondered whether Rumi's mother had been assaulted, but it wasn't clear if that was addressed in the full plot and it wasn't a topic I especially wanted to search for, so it's kind of a relief to see someone else had the same thought!

That would honestly fit the themes better to my mind, because otherwise ... the heroes go around slaying demons! It's one thing for one demon to repent at the climax of this film; but if other demons have been lovey-dovey "good people" with humans in the past, all the slaying looks kinda indiscriminately murdery, y'know?

Yeah. It still works in regards to Huntr/x if Rumi's mother didn't tell anyone about her lover, especially not Celine, but that's already two demons in two decades that turned ~not-evil so that makes it seem unlikely that that's never happened before. And Celine believing that Rumi's mother was assaulted by a demon makes her reaction to Rumi's demon side make even more sense.

KPop Demon Hunters was such a fun movie to experience together with other people! I watched it with my parents and sister while visiting them over the summer, and even my dad stayed awake for the whole movie 😆 Haven't seen the new Superman yet, but it's on my "popcorn movie"-watch list.

This is just me reading Internet rumors that scroll past on Tumblr, so this could be 100% inaccurate, but I think KPop Demon Hunters was cut down to its current length from a much longer movie/series. At least people in the fandom claim this, and this is the supposed source of a lot of fanon accepted info about Rumi's parents + that Rumi's guardian was the one to eventually kill Rumi's demon father (+ possibly also Rumi's mother). I take all this with a grain of salt, but the fandom sure is having fun speculating, and I can't begrudge them that 💙

Btw, the convention I went to this summer had a "shrine" to Jinu organically form outsides of artist alley. People left offerings at his photograph all con long 😆
