SGA 2x20 Allies

I'm very proud of myself. On Friday I wrote a 16 page essay on the sociology of consumption - I found the topic not terribly interesting, but I think the paper is good - even though
sga_reversebang went live and I have no will power. Fortunately I'm a fast reader.
Saturday we had guests, and today I wrote a 9 page essay on Feminist Economics (though I did research and structuring beforehand.) Go me!
As a reward I watched Allies even though it's past midnight, but whatever, I earned it.
I loved it! Great episode. Made me want to rewatch a lot more. Maybe in the next few days?
Ronon sitting in the control room! And Chuck! Lots of Chuck in this episode. There's even a Ronon&Chuck scene, have to reread My Home and Native Land. Long live Canada.
Rodney as a science dictator, snapping his fingers and ordering his scientists around, heh. "Rodney is doing everything inhumanly possible" and Ronon rolling his eyes, love. "Let's talk about it for a really long time and that'll help for sure!"
Somewhat competent Elizabeth is good, too, though for the whole episode I got the feeling she hasn't really thought things through. No, wrong: she has (or at least large parts), she just refuses to come to an internal decision, always with the moral conflicts. "If you're asking me whether I'm losing sleep over this... well, I am taking the sedatives you prescribed..." For once, a bit of Elizabeth characterization. Actually, if you assume that Elizabeth knows deep inside she is in over her head, doesn't want/can't acknowledge it even to herself, has fantasies of herself as a hero, always battles with moral questions - then her characterization makes sense! It's just clearly not what TPTB were going for. Whatever, this is my Elizabeth. And I like her, actually. I wish there was more good gen fic about her.
Anyway, moving on. Or not: who is sitting in the chair while John is on the Orion? A short time later he says that Lorne is on board the Orion, did they switch?
I like that Elizabeth asks Ronon and Teyla for their opinion. And later they're present at the conference table and also asked for their opinion. Yay! I wonder that Ronon isn't more suspicious.
John wanting to make sure Teyla is okay with this is a great touch. Actually, the more early episodes I watch the more I become a John/Teyla UST shipper. As in, they are at least somewhat attracted to each other, but I'm not sure they would ever make a move. Or in a platonic way, that's fine too, but they clearly have a - is there a better way to say "special connection"?
I like pragmatic Teyla here.
Wraith! Wonderfully arrogant Wraith. Where do they get their clothes from? There must be a planet of the tailoring Wraith worshippers. With annual design contests, and the price is the gift of life. Similar to The Carpet Makers. Oooh, crossover idea! That would be crack, heh.
Poor Carson and Radek with the Wraith. (Did it become greener later on in the episode?) If I were the Wraith I'd be annoyed by their dumbed down talk, but then they're understandably nervous.
Rodney and Hermiod are priceless. I bet if Hermiod had still been alive part of Rodney's hallucination in "Remnants" would have been Hermiod admitting that Rodney is smarter than him. 100% sure.
Again, I like Teyla here. I do think she recognizes that what they did to Michael was... questionable at best, but it's still miles above feeding for her. Michael saying they won't meet again is almost funny in hindsight. If wishes were horses. Ronon as her guard dog is fun, but his reaction to Michael seems a bit over-the-top. I wouldn't know, I haven't seen "Michael" yet.
ETA: Is that Teyla's last appearance this episode? Where does she go later? Possibly she's with the Athosians, since they're in Atlantis, but it's strange.
Heh, the queen being logical at Elizabeth and John! And more Radek, aww. Carson, on the other hand, is annoying. They were working on weaponizing the retrovirus, were nearly finished according to him, and he never thought about the consequences? He's oh so shocked by what the queen does, but only objects to Elizabeth after the hive has already left? Someone should take him by the hand, force him to face the moral questions and come to a decision one way or the other. (For some reason, Elizabeth questioning is much less annoying than Carson. Maybe because Carson always looks so scared and worried.)
Wait, does the queen wear green nail polish?!
John is standing around on the Daedalus with nothing to do. He just wants to fly. *pets John* But why is someone else flying the Jumper, then?
More Rodney and Hermiod, yay! I'm starting to get the appreciation for Rodney's arms, btw.
Wraith queen blackmailing - Teyla told you, guys! I love how Elizabeth and John look at Rodney at the same time and Rodney just sighs. And his "for real?" when his demands are being met! Shoving Chuck out of the way and his grin when he's saying "only everything you ever wanted to know about Wraith technology, but were afraid to ask."
Offering to repair their hive? Elizabeth, noooo *sighs*
ETA: And what happened to blowing up the hive ship? It is crippled, after all. The Daedalus should have no problems blowing it up before it could send a message. The Wraith could have a back-up plan for that case (there's one of them on another planet who will disclose the location if they don't report back or something, which doesn't sound like something the Wraith would do...), but they don't mention that. Blow up the hive!
John bringing coffee to the labs is canon! Even when Rodney's not there (take that, McShep OTPers.) John and Radek are fun together (and I don't know what the writers were thinking if they didn't want us to think John is flirting with him. Seriously. Or is that just me? Maybe it's just John being John.) They do have fun rolling chairs in Atlantis.
Ronon annoyed by Rodney is cute. And Rodney likes being appreciated! Nobody else does it, poor Rodney. Another Ronon overreaction, maybe he had a nightmare that night. "He's not my superior." "Certainly not in every sense." Heh. As much as I love Rodney&Ronon friendship stories, I just remembered why the best ones do emphasize their occasional, um, different perspectives.
John and Rodney presenting their plan are so cute! I recognize this scene(s) from about one hundred video clips. Soo cute.
Rodney volunteering to go on the hive ship! "I know it's uncharacteristically brave...", aw, Rodney. You just want another chance to play with the alien space ship.
Wraith architecture looks as badly made as ever, btw.
John standing around on the Daedalus bridge again, instead of already on standby in an F-302. But then he wouldn't have this great view. The Daedalus/hives battle is a bit predictable, but hey, space battle! Of course Caldwell immediately asks after Sheppard. I like Caldwell in this episode. (I bet John does, too. Caldwell lets him run around on his space ship.)
Rodney gives good panic face. Exactly this sense of "Ohmygod I can't believe this is happening!" And the hive goo looks disgusting.
I really enjoyed this episode. SGA did have its good moments :)
I don't have the season 3 DVD, but there's still a couple of earlier episodes I haven't watched yet. Maybe I'll finally find some time to iron, too. *coughs*
Now it's almost half past two. Bed time. But it was worth it.
